One of the many things I enjoy about Will's videos is how he shows what the trail looks like in each section. As a section-hiker, I appreciate this as it allows me to visually see what the trail guide is describing. Thanks Will, for your efforts in providing the hiking community with a great series of videos.
+Will “Red Beard” Wood That's how all life should be. Everyone and everything in tune and at peace. The little thing looked like it would have followed you anywhere.
Ten years since I watched this the first time. You seem to have more geographic awareness than other hikers and ID the places where you are. Thanks for that. Hope you are still hiking a bit.
At the 42:00 mark; THAT is why you hike the trail!!!!! tugs at your heart.... very well done with all your A.T. vids. congrats to you. very inspirational.
the deer dude? seriously? hahaha cutest moment EVER. Congrads on the 1000 mile stone. The wife (Mary) & I are enjoying the series. Keep em coming brother.
Would have to agree. Hitting the AT for thanksgiving this year. I dream about being on the AT.... Our last trip on it changed our lives for the better. L.D. hiking is a Godsend for many, including us.-Nate
I truly enjoy ur style of filming! You show the walk, the vistas, the people and animals, instead of alot of music and slideshow. Thank you. We were doing Harpers Ferry to Georgia,sb, in 2013, but my partner sprained his ankle and our journey had to end after only a few hundred miles. Really great to seethose areas thru ur lense! I just saw ur doing the pct this year, can't wait to watch! Not too far from me, northern Washington. Thanks and happy trails! Trail name - Idaho
New sub here man, thanks for the great vids. I will be doing some hikes on the AT this year and your vids have me looking forward to the adventures even more.
You passed through my hood in Daleville. Sadly I didn't get to run shuttle very much this year due to work but the previous year I did and got a hiker with the Virginia blues that got off the trail so I know what your talking about with that.
Best state on the AT..used to go to school in Blacksburg, VA. It's like déjà vu watching your videos, that place in NC where you guys stopped down off Albert Mtn. is the Coweeta hydrologic lab, I used to work there. I'll be thru hiking the AT in 2016 so these are great references, nice work.
I grew up near Damascus, Va. Beautiful little town. MRO is a nice local outfitter hopefully you had a chance to stop there. Enjoyed your videos so far. Happy Trails to ya!
Ok seems I'm getting a really late start to watching your AT videos and I'm really enjoying them man! I'm planning my AT thru hike for 2020 and the knowledge I'll gain from you and other vloggers videos will be priceless. I hope to vlog my experience as well. I live an hour east of Shenandoah, they are my usual stomping grounds and I'll be doing that whole section thru the park this May. Can't wait!! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos Red Beard, hike on.
I know that this video is several years old, but I’m loving the details and info, as I’m planning on section-hiking Virginia later this year! If all goes as planned, I’ll fly down to Charlotte near the end of the week before Memorial Day, getting picked up my nephew who lives about 2 hours away, whence he’ll then drive me to Damascus. I’ll then take the last few days of May and as much time in June as I’ll need to make it to Harpers Ferry. In 2007, I hiked from Springer to Damascus, only getting off due to a stress-fracture from an unhealed shinsplint; last year, I finally caved in and embraced my status as a section-hiker, so as to finally finish the AT! Collectively, I managed to hike from Harpers Ferry to just across the Connecticut border. So, after finishing Virginia, I’ll have well over half of the trail done! I also plan to hike Connecticut and Massachusetts, maybe also Vermont, in 2021 this year.
To be honest Virignia looks quite nice. I don't think Virginia Blues has much to do with the state, but rather with the state of mind after hiking for so long.
Looks like all the woods have been cut down in ole Virginny...hiking the Applachian trail has been reduced to cow path meanderings. At least Pennsylvania has some big woods left.
Hey Red Beard,.I have been following the last three AT vids your so awesomely posted and have been so very impressed with your journey!!! My goal is the Georgia to Maine quest in the near future. You have done such a super incredible job detailing your adventure....very informative and so educational with your attention and information to detail. I'll keep watching...I am learning a lot!! Happy Trails!!!!
I have family that lives in Johnson City, looks like your uncle lives on Boone lake. Anyway any help would be appreciated. I have cancer and want to do a 3-4 day on the trail in Tennessee preferably near the smokies. any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
RedBeard. Noticed a very subtle change in your gear at the 36:30 (or so...), your sunglasses are now different and your multi tool is not swinging around on your right shoulder strap.....??
Good eye! Yeah I moved the multi tool to my waist belt pocket because the constant rubbing was damaging the strap on my backpack. I did hike with the same pair of sunglasses the entire time and they were great. But I did upgrade to a new pair of Natives for the PCT because the pair I carried on the AT fogged up all the time! So I went with Native Linville model this time instead of the Bomber style. Happy Hiking!
Sunglasses......it appeared you were wearing brown bomber style all thru. Then at the 37min area the glasses hanging on your shirt were camp....? Either way, your videos are enlightening. I dream of the day I can do a thru hike.....but will likely be doing it in chunks. Good luck on PCT!! I'll stay tuned for sure!
Good ol' Damascus! I love the Creeper Trail that runs through there to Abington. I've hiked and biked that numerous times over the past few years. Nothing like hiking that beast at night! The only problem lies with Abington. It's sort of frightening as there are 911 help boxes located along the trail once you are on the outskirts of their city limits. News reports from A-hole are horrendous! It literally seems like the most violent of cities!!
Some did it with only 1500 bucks after gear purchases. ThAt would mean no hotels and only free hostels and controlled restaurant spending I recommend 3,000.

I'm interested to know your reasons for going on the massive hikes through the wilderness. Is it a personal challenge? Is it the exercise? Or do you have a little John Muir in you?
Hi Red Beard, nice vid. Met you at Tent City ballpark Saturday night with my pals. Sorry bout the close call in the dark, though it worked out ok, considering what might have happened. Hike Safe here on out...sincerely, Tent-n-Kent.
sorry if this has been asked before, what is the purpose of the fence "switchbacks"? you just went through I think the third one in this series (45:30 on this one)
Love your vids Red Beard. Am considering my own thru hike soon and your videos just stoke the fire! Excellent HD too. How do you manage batteries/storage tho?!?!
When did you hit your stride? I hear that it takes a couple hundred miles or so for you to really get your trail legs. Or to get to a point where you are in your best form.
Continuing to watch your treck. Question: You've provided near constant video. How do you keep batteries charged? See, I'm showing my inexperience (and my ignorance!).
Absolutely loving these videos man, really great stuff. One question: what was the farthest away you would space your mail drops? Or did you just resupply on the trail?
Glad you have enjoyed my videos! I resupplied completely from the trail. Sometimes I would lay awake in my tent and shop online for food like mountain houses and have them sent a town or two ahead. That's the only boxes I did.
Great videos man. My wife and I can't wait to see the next one. Two questions for you though. We are planning to our journey for March. What would you say are the top pieces of gear you used the most often on your trek? And my wife would be annoyed if I didn't ask. What happened to Snorlax? He just vanished after that sweet lodge you guys were at. Thanks man.
Don't know if I responded to you yet or not but easily my favorite pieces, actually it was three favorites my ZPacks Duplex tent, ZPacks Arc Blast backpack and Patagonia Cap 4 hoody.
Love your videos- I just subscribed:) quick question: do you have to have a bear canister in Georgia? My wife and I will start the AT in August- just a 10 day trip to see if we like hiking...
There is one small section where a bear canister was required but that might have changed I would check that online. It was a small section I just didn't camp in that area. I think it was right before blood mountain.
I plan to start the AT in a few years and have watched numerous videos so far. But I have yet to hear anyone share how they buy items at the stores. I doubt you all carry lots of cash but do these stores accept cards?
Okay, at the risk of revealing my ignorance, around the 44 min marker you are in the tent and rain and I noticed your Zpack was outside your tent. Why didn't you have it inside the tent.
Gives me more room to put the backpack on the outside however when it rains really hard I bring it into my tent so the splash back doesn't cover everything in mud!
It's almost always obvious. I wandered off trail only once. Figured out I went the wrong way after I reached the bottom of the mountain had to turn around and hike back up the mountian. Apps like Guthook now make getting lost a thing of the past. Download it.

what month were you in virginia?

I used black diamond trail shock poles, I think that's what their called, and they lasted the whole way. I did manage to bend one of them in New Hampshire but an outfitter replaced it for me.
Tent website is

How was new Hampshire compared to the rest of the trail. I've already hiked Washington so if it's like that the whole way i think I'll do fine haha
And thank you! :D
New Hampshire was pretty much the hardest state. Right there with Maine. If you can hike the whites you can hike any of the trail for sure. Nothing else is as steep, I would say what makes some of the other sections tough is more related to the heat, bugs, mental struggle and it is still constant climbing up and down just not as steep as the Whites. Hope this helps :)
