I remember seeing them film the opening scene at this location on Magnolia and Cartwright in North Hollywood. The driveway between the building is way smaller on the show and this driveway you show is 3 times as wide. I do not think the location you found is correct.
Great research as always, Rick. Thanks. Amazing to see that most of these locations still exist, albeit re-branded to different uses. The plumbing shop/brick-a-brack store must have drawn some attention to the occupants over the years by people thinking it may look like Fred and Lamont's residence inside still.
I know that Central Ave location very well. In the early 80's the chicken place was a KFC and the North Hollywood location my friend lives not too far from there. Amazing.
@@uniqueorganicshaircare9880 I made a mistake the KFC in the 70's and 80's was located on 88th and Central Ave. Now I see it has been moved on Manchester and Central and combined with Taco Bell I remember pops back then taking me to the old one our last time in 1981 when I was 8. That chicken place probably came years later. We moved from LA in 82. I came back in 95. The main thing I remember is the Liquor store because that is where I got my Twinkies then lol. 92nd St residents then for Christmas used to really dress up their homes I remember. Good times being in my father's junk truck.
I used to watch this with my dad back in the day. I wish he was still here to see these awesome videos you make. I think the opening credits scene is the best part here. Thanks for all your work! 🙂
I watched Sanford and Son when I was a kid back in the 70s. Have great memories of that show and other shows of the day I watched too much TV as a kid. Unfortunately. But hey I'm here. Amazing but true. LOL
I forgot to leave a comment about the location. The location I found the most fascinating was the location where it was filmed. They had a nostalgic sense. In a way it was disappointing to see that it had changed. Because in my imagination I still have the way it looked when they were actually in the house in filming. I always like to think that those locations are preserved for posterity what is posterity . LOL. These shows gave us comfort as children and so it's kind of shocking to see that they're not maintained as Museum pieces. Kind of the way that Dave Letterman show was dismantled and everything thrown away and disposed of is what I heard. And as a child it seemed more real to me. Anyhow, I like to think that somehow and someway these locations are preserved, somewhere in the Twilight Zone.
Loved that show as a kid. The actual building where Fred sat for the opening credits. That was my favorite to see. shame it looks little like it did for the show.
One of my all time favorite shows , got my kids hooked on it on dvd . This was soooo interesting to see where they filmed the opening of the show . Love to know who got the sign from out front. They probably threw it all up in one day , shot it and took it back down . It makes you wanna believe that it was there and still is after all these years . Thanks
One of the funniest shows in my life, greatest them song ever. My mind is blown as I live around the corner from the junkyard location and I'm just finding this out now!!!! Gonna walk over and take a look! Thanks for posting!!!!!!!
Wasn't their an aunt hazel too? Early on in the show? I think she was on the one where Lamont was going to get married and the bride to be said no when the minister asked if she takes this man to be her lawfully wedded husband....
One of my fave shows. So funny. Fred Sanford was such a character. Loved him and aunt Esther. It's crazy how they Hated each other on the show but in real life they were best friends. And Red said he wouldn't do the show unless she was in the show with him. So epic. Loved this show.
I grew up on 91st and Central during the filming of Sanford And Son, the house I lived in could be seen on Google maps. At that time 9114 Central Ave was a parole/probation office, where I learned to play basketball, shoot pool, play ping pong as well as race cars on a track. The granite place was a gas station, the fast food place was one of the original Fat Burgers where they had the best chili fritos. A small church was across the street. Even though I have gone on to bigger and better things, my most fondest memories of life are on that corner.
Google maps shows the Power Plumbing building at 10659 W Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood, CA and someone has tagged it as Sanford and Son. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for showing us this. I already have the complete set of "Sanford & Son." So, I don't want to prevent someone else from getting this prize. Movies are not made like this anymore. So sad! Thanks again! 👏👏👏👏👏 five clapping hands!
You had to do alot of research to find these cool facts. I saw the resemblance of the surrounding buildings trees etc. This really made it even more fun to watch the opening/closing credits. I wonder how long it took to set up the shot for the credits. I imagine it was done in one day. Really love these videos. It really helps me appreciate what it takes to bring a show together. There are so many aspects to consider. Thanks for revealing some of them. I love that timeless classic show ..
The location of the actual building used in the opening title screen of the show was of the most interest to me. I enjoy when actual buildings are located on your channel. Even though I don't usually like long videos, it would be helpful if you left the screen shot comparisons up a little longer. I find myself having to pause and go back a lot or run the video at slower speeds to catch all of the visual detail. Thanks.
It's also helpful to use Photoshop's "skew/crop' feature to scale and stretch a still shot onto Google Street View, for easier then-and-now comparisons.
Well, this was a fun memory! Although I never thought about the "establishing shots" for Sanford and Son, I was a Page at NBC back when it was being filmed at NBC Burbank Studios. I would posit that it was always set up and filmed on one stage, not two, but cannot remember. It's possible. I DO remember taking people on a "tour" of NBC every day. Actually, several times a day. They had to re-create the Sandford and Son set (along with all the others) every WEEK, because it was very fluid. Many shows were taped on a mere 4 stages every week. Each had to be set up, broken down, then re-set every week. The "sets" were stored in what looked like a large rent-some-storage area. The various sets were separated by chain link fence. The Sanford and Son set was by FAR the most difficult. The "set" had to look the same from week to week. This meant numbering each and every piece of "junk" outside the Sanford abode. NOT the overall picture that was used as the opening credits. The actual "set", which showed the "front yard" of the house that was presumably behind the "store". It had stuff ALL over the place in front of the little house where Fred lived. If you have read this long - thank you. IN ANY CASE - think about what it would be to re-create the front of the house EVERY week! Each piece of "junk" was numbered. There were hundreds, if not thousands - of pieces of "junk" that were carefully numbered and had to be set back in place EVERY WEEK in their exact locations. When you looked at all the stuff sitting in the storage cage, it was piled willy-nilly and seemed chaotic. In fact, the set guys would come in EVERY week and set them up EXACTLY on the sound stage for each taping. It was quite amazing. People on tours would look at it and say WHAT? But every week, those pieces of junk would be set up to look the same for every episode.
Fascinating! Thank you for the recollection & the historical information. Wonder what happened to all those pieces of junk & all the props that were used on the entire set of the show. Wonder if any of those items are still in existence? They sure would make great collectible items for us diehard S & S fans! Personally would prize, the most, the stick that Fred carried during the closing credits! Thank you for sharing your experience at the studio!
I have every episode on DVD. I can watch the same episode 1000 times and say what line is going to be said before the actor says it. My family was shocked when I was watching Sanford and Son at a recent family birthday party.
I think seeing the site where Lamont drove into and Fred sat reading the paper was very cool to see. It might not look the same but it nice to see. And it’s nice to see the improvements done over the decades. Sanford and Son has stood the test of time and is still very funny and entertaining.
John Challeen, The station is #127 Robert A. Cinader Memorial Fire Station in the City of Carson in Los Angeles County California. A real working station.
Great clip. Thanks for sharing. Sanford and Son was one of my favorite shows growing up as kid in the 70's. Demond Wilson came to speak at our school during my senior year in '90. I've been wanting to see the Sanford & Son set for years. Thanks for the virtual tour of the building.
You an see a grocery store katty corner from the junk yard, Lamont drives right by it before turning left, the same grocery store is visible on current street view
I lived right over the hill off Sierra Highway in Friendly Valley. Late 1980's. Me and a friend tried to sneak down there but security politely chased us away. Beautiful area. I worked at Magic Mountain for a season.
Very Interesting Rick. I loved Sanford & Son....Never knew the little bldg was the Junk Shop Rick!!! Your great at checking all these thing's out. I love the old show's Sand Ford and son is one of them!!!
I liked the comparison from the Google street view vs the credit view. Thanks for you putting this walk down memory lane together. I can’t believe it’s been 50 years.
Seems like yesterday that my grandparents who loved to search out old neat stuff would drive up Magnolia Boulevard to the SELECT SHOP (actual name of location shop) and visit with owner Joe Lawler and look around his shop. Joe was thrilled when a location scout said they'd like to use his store for a t.v. show shoot. The rest is history. Those were the days.❤
That location was in emergency!...they had a rescue about the junk owner caught in a bear trap.they walked around the right side which would have been the kitchen door side in the show.
@@RobSchellinger the producers probably took some liberties with locations in relation to the zone of coverage of a typical paramedic unit of the day. I found the station used in the series on Google Earth once, and it is in an industrial part of the city, but Squad 51 was responding to calls in residential areas, especially in the more mountainous areas around LA. Unless Los Angeles is severely lacking in fire stations, I don't think one paramedic squad would be responding to calls all over the city.
The workplace and house of Fred and Lamont is most Exciting to see. Wow, you are on point, with this. I have watched Sanfor and Son since 1972. And still do watch the show. I was 12 years old at that time. I'm 62 now. Again, thank you very very much for this. Going back in time seeing the real locations. Giovanni
I remember there were two different versions of that intro shot....one as where Lamont acted like he was driving, turning the wheel, and looking around, but you could almost tell the truck was not moving...... I think that was from intros on the earlier episodes......Then in some later we episodes, you can tell they re-shot it, and he appears to be actually driving down the street, add you can see the reflections of trees he is driving under moving past the windshield.
TMZ is short for thirty miles zone . Go around the North Hollywood area and you will see filming location after filming location. If the filming location is closer then 30 miles you don't have to house the production crew . I live in the area and I can spot shoot location after shoot location . Also after the shoot by law it has to return to it's original look.
I can still remember sitting with my father as a kid watching that show and both of us laughing till our sides split. Especially when he'd lock horns with Ant Ester, his one liners to her were like an acid dipped sword, just brutal, he hated that chick.
Thanks for the research, I appreciate your hard work. I am most interested in the Central Ave location. As a kid I lived just off of Central Ave and Imperial Hwy, it’s about a 5-7 minute drive. I’ve always known they used Central Ave as the fictitious address, but I didn’t realize how close it was to where I lived and played as a kid.
The building in Burbank at 4:15 is the studio where The Tonight Show was filmed from 1872 to 1999?+ with Johnny Carson and later Jay Leno. Afterwards Jimmy Fallon not such a funny guy moved the Tonight Show back to new york. You had to wait outside that building in line from 3pm in the heat to wait to get in to the show taping at 5pm assuming you went to the ticket office in the morning when they give out tickets before 8am for the day's taping and if you did not get the ticket in time before 8am because they ran out of tickets they might give you a standby ticket which may or not get you into see the show. Ironically, I saw Johnny Carson before 1992 but it was a high row and you could barely see the stage so you watched the monitors which showed the commercials while the stage was dark, and quiet. Another time when it was Leno hosting some VIPs were no show and I was lucky to sit in the front row but the Cameras were blocking most of the view. It was Julia Child as the 1st guest showing Leno how to open the Champagne bottle with a huge knife. Both times it was easier to see the show at home on your own TV. I have seen TV shows at Paramount Studios like Becker 12 hour taping for 1 episode. Each scene filmed 3 or more takes. Kinda boring but the tonight show was exactly one hour after you waited three hours in line outside the front of that building. Studio One. The Bob Hope Studio where he filmed many of his TV specials. Bob hope Mr up and coming comedian of 1938. after years of vaudeville performances in the n 1920s and 1930s.
The tonight show studio was amazingly smaller in person than on TV. I think you're mistaken Stage one was dedicated to the Tonight Show according to the NBC tour guide. they may have moved sets around but I was told Stage one was dedicated to the Tonight show
You mentioned how its easier to watch these shows from home. I have gone to 1 NFL game, 1 Outback bowl and 1 Tampa Bay Rays game. The only one i actually enjoyed watching live was the baseball game. Id rather watch from home. Much more comfortable, no lines for the bathroom, concessions are cheaper and, no traffic. 😎👍🏍💨
I tracked this down about 15 years ago using old phone books at the Burbank public library after noticing the Magnolia market in the background of the opening. Later I noticed when I watched the closing on my computer you could actually see the street sign for Cartwright above their heads. I got all excited and went in to Power Plumbing and asked if they knew it had been filmed there. They did. 😆 The Magnolia Market people however insisted that the market wasn’t around back then 🤔 Great video, love your channel!

Prairie Viking They're still on "Get TV" here the channel is 33.2 over the air, but check your listings for channel in your area. I watch them regularly. Even though I've been through the cycle of shows I never grow tired of watching.
All in the family Sunday night, Sanford and son Friday night
this show brought laughter from my dad...always thrilled me as a kid.
I enjoyed the address location it really gives u a visual of where the Sanford junk empire was during that time. Very interesting content great work keep it up.
I agree, the location videos are my favorite. Needs to do six million dollar man and and my childhood will be complete.
Amazing.
Andre Dupuis was it KFC before Quik N Split?
@@uniqueorganicshaircare9880 it was a Quick N Split
I love seeing the actual film locations and how they look today. Looking forward to more of your videos!
I used to watch this with my dad back in the day. I wish he was still here to see these awesome videos you make. I think the opening credits scene is the best part here. Thanks for all your work! 🙂
That's s -a-n-f-o-r-d period.
@Black Buick I wish I had a list of all the things he ever said that the G. stood for!
@Willie Cosey And the G stands for godfather
I plan to party lightly slightly politely and if possible all nightly. Lmbo. Fred was a fool.
Episode Copper Caper Fred said, "Because he's white dont mean he dumb." Lmbo
In episode Fred Donna and Carol Fred said, "She gotta fine brown frame, all I can see she looks good to me she has a fine brown frame." Lmbo!!!
Loved seeing where the opening scene was shot. My dad was a big fan of Redd Foxx.
He saw him perform in night clubs years before this show was on TV.
I saw him in Las Vegas. It was the funniest thing ever. I couldn’t stop laughing.
Redd Foxx is a true legend!
So the building next door is supposed to be where Julio lived.
I thought that was down by the schoolyard.
Loved that the location is now a plumbing outfit. Imagine Lamont and Fred as plumbers and the kind of trouble they could have gotten into.
The irony is I live in East Liverpool, OH. And there is a business called Sanford And Son Plumbing and Supplies
@@philipmclaughlin9636 imagine them running a hotel together lol
They should name their business “Super Barrio Bros”
@@MikeLutton Well, they did that on Sandford and Son. It was called Sanford Arms.
fred hey esther go clean up the room upstairs mabye the cleaning stuff can ugly that face away while your at it lol
Loved that show as a kid. The actual building where Fred sat for the opening credits. That was my favorite to see. shame it looks little like it did for the show.
I was just in Los Angeles for the weekend with my husband for our anniversary because he knows I get into all this stuff!! I love your channel 👍🏻
You have a *SNIPE NOSE!*
Did you drive by this location?
One of my all time favorite shows , got my kids hooked on it on dvd . This was soooo interesting to see where they filmed the opening of the show . Love to know who got the sign from out front. They probably threw it all up in one day , shot it and took it back down . It makes you wanna believe that it was there and still is after all these years . Thanks
One of the funniest shows in my life, greatest them song ever. My mind is blown as I live around the corner from the junkyard location and I'm just finding this out now!!!! Gonna walk over and take a look! Thanks for posting!!!!!!!
"Aunt Hazel, You mean Witch Hazel!"
Wasn't their an aunt hazel too? Early on in the show? I think she was on the one where Lamont was going to get married and the bride to be said no when the minister asked if she takes this man to be her lawfully wedded husband....
I ALREADY HAVE THE WHOLE SERIES!!
Rickey ,YES I DO TOO!😂
Hard to believe it's been 50 years. I would love to visit the site of the old junkyard. So many memories growing up watching this show
The location of the business was a big surprise to me. I always figured it was on a back lot, not an actual building in town.
*Arkansas* *Man*
Same.
One of my fave shows. So funny. Fred Sanford was such a character. Loved him and aunt Esther. It's crazy how they Hated each other on the show but in real life they were best friends. And Red said he wouldn't do the show unless she was in the show with him. So epic. Loved this show.
God you're beautiful!
Fact: The Burbank Studios now, was formerly NBC Studios.
I eat lunch at the weinershntzle across the street from time to time, they serve beer at that location . Hot dog & a beer👌

Growing up in Savannah I saw my first episode and I became a huge nerd of S and S for a long time, still am...😎
I loved seeing the old NBC studio. Great video!
“Oh Elizabeth, it’s the big one, I’m comin’ to see you”
“How ‘bout one right across that lip”
“Enter your ugliness”
Great googly moogly 😆😆😆
"That's 'S-A-N-F-O-R-D. Period."
"How about five across your lip?"
"I'll give you five across yole eyes!"
Thanks.
Hans Oak respectfully, Agreed!
It's also helpful to use Photoshop's "skew/crop' feature to scale and stretch a still shot onto Google Street View, for easier then-and-now comparisons.
@@VideoNOLA That is a very good suggestion.
I think all of you are eliminated from winning the DVD now. I will win.
@@davidjames666 I sincerely hope you do, my friend! Good luck.
It was and still is one of my favorite shows I have all the episodes on dvd I just wish they did more seasons
Loved seeing the original store front junk yard of Sanford and Son was originally filmed thank you.
where jumk yard was ,can almost still see it , have theme song running thru my head !
50 years later and the show still makes me laugh. Good video. Good info.😆
I have every episode on DVD. I can watch the same episode 1000 times and say what line is going to be said before the actor says it. My family was shocked when I was watching Sanford and Son at a recent family birthday party.
Black Buick
Fred says to the white cop,
What have you got against black drivers?
I think seeing the site where Lamont drove into and Fred sat reading the paper was very cool to see. It might not look the same but it nice to see. And it’s nice to see the improvements done over the decades. Sanford and Son has stood the test of time and is still very funny and entertaining.
Also in the programme: Emergency! in the 70s with Kevin Tigh and Randolph Mantooth one of the responses had the corner of the old building in it.
I thought that looked like something straight out of Emergency! not gonna lie, I have binge watched entirely too much Emergency
I would love to see the Emergency station location.
Hi Rick, this was my dad's favorite show. I liked seeing the opening credits location. Hope you are well.
Was my dad's too!
Love when used play poker with friends at fred house
You an see a grocery store katty corner from the junk yard, Lamont drives right by it before turning left, the same grocery store is visible on current street view
Awesome! My twin daughters were in a movie when they were little and filmed at the Disney Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall
I lived right over the hill off Sierra Highway in Friendly Valley. Late 1980's. Me and a friend tried to sneak down there but security politely chased us away. Beautiful area. I worked at Magic Mountain for a season.
Another GREAT JOB Rick . Thanks For All your Hard and Caring Work !
The street where Lamont is turning in,Was very interesting. Alaways wonder if it was actually a real street or stage studio.
The street that Lamont is driving on is Magnolia Ave. in North Hollywood, CA. The street the store front is located on.
The Emergency! locations would make a good video if you haven't done it already.
@@williama.walker2287 They were probably all over LA.
Great sitcom Sanford & Son. Glad I grew up during those times. Thank you for posting.

Giovanni
I really wish they found a way to preserve the real location. I can see that is the place but I'm such a nostalgic.❤
That would have been great,i live on the east coast and would have took a weekend a flew out there from Baltimore.
Sanford and Son reminds me of my Dad and me. Used to watch the show with my father and grandfather. We had an old Ford truck too.
I love Redd Foxx he was hilarious. He and Demond Wilson worked wonderful together. I remember when Lamont brings home 2 coffins. 😂
Thanks for doing this, sure brings back memories of my youth watching episodes with my parents.
Is "fictitional" even a word? Otherwise, thanks for the memories.
Chip Saunders I hope he learns the word fictitious😂🤣
I hope all of you are having fun with fictitional. Fred Sanford made up words all the time and no one said anything about it. 🤣
It's a conflation of "fictitious" and "fictional."

Sanford and son stole idea from a jewish family
Favorite show of all time. I love the beginning location shot. I always wondered where that was shot at. Great job!!
Very interesting info about Sanford n Son locations, etc. Kudos to you. Looking forward to your next video.
I can still remember sitting with my father as a kid watching that show and both of us laughing till our sides split. Especially when he'd lock horns with Ant Ester, his one liners to her were like an acid dipped sword, just brutal, he hated that chick.
you really laughed that hard??
I grew up watching Sanford and Sons. I’m 59, so I think I was watching the originals. My son is special needs and loves that show.
Esther: I’ll have you know that in my neighborhood sex is a misdemeanor.
Fred: Yeah, the more you miss it, da meaner you get!
Big part of my growing up in the 70’s. My life would not have been the same without Fred Sanford.
There's an episode of Emergency where they are at the location of Sanford and Son.

They did. 😆 The Magnolia Market
people however insisted that the market wasn’t around back then 🤔
