When I was little my grandpa would pick us up in his big gold cadillac at my mom's house in L.A. and from Bakersfield to Fresno he'd pop in this 8-track and we'd all sing along to every word. When CDs came out, it was the first one I bought, so I could listen in the car.

No question Marty Robbins was sooo great at telling the story in his songs. Just fantastic. As a kid growing up in El Paso these songs were on the radio ALL the time.

Marty Robbins was a great story teller in his songs. AS others have noted, his best known song was "El Paso", a great tragic song. It was also performed by the best cover band ever, the Grateful Dead, but only live in concert, not on a studio album.

This really makes me long for a Good Cowboy movie! Even a night of western type TV! Wagon Train, Rawhide, maybe even Maverick, with a step down of The Rebel or even The Rifleman! Marty Robins great voice and music bring back the days when the settlers were in trouble and depended on hearing the belling of the Charge! And the thunder of the horses of the Cavalry

Two other great songs from Marty Robbins is Prairie Fire & His Master’s Call. I’m not religious at all & the latter song still gives me chills no matter how many times I’ve heard it. If you do believe it must be very meaningful!

Marty Robbins did a three-part gunfighter story that I HIGHLY recommend. They were 1. El Paso 2. Felina 3. El Paso City. All three are fantastic story telling. But that's what he did. He was the master of story songs. Prairie Fire, Strawberry Roan, Six Brothers, Ride Cowboy Ride, Devil Woman, A White Sport Coat and so many others. His most powerful and beautiful song is "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife." It was the top Country/Western song of 1970.

The Arizona Rangers were a small elite law force. For The Texas rangers, it's said "One Ranger, One Riot." Arizona Rangers were one county or range war per ranger, at the time there were 14 counties. There's the trilogy of El Paso, Felena , and El Paso City, also try the Master's Call.

Here's some interesting history for you. The Arizona rangers were a group of about 20... yes 20 men who kept the peace in the Arizona territory prior to it becoming a state. Modeled after the Texas Rangers and founded in 1901, the Arizona Rangers were tasked with hunting down and arresting outlaws in the Territory, especially along the Mexican border. By 1908, most of the outlaws had been arrested, killed, or had fled into Mexico. The Rangers were disbanded in 1909, shortly before Arizona became a state.

Both Roy Orbison and Marty Robbins voices were compared to operatic singers by Don McLean (American Pie, Vincent) and Don also had an album of him singing Marty's songs written or associated with him. Though El Paso is probably still Marty's main masterpiece, Big Iron has been challenging its pre-eminence by inclusion in the game Fall Out Vegas which introduced many new listeners to the man who was consistently voted by country music fans as the number 1 country singer. Marty was not only a fabulous vocalist, but his songwriting was second to none and as versatile as his vocalising was. I enjoyed your reaction and thanks for the way you actually listened without interrupting! The next gunfighter ballad you should listen to is 'The Master's Call' or try Johnny Cash's 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town.'

    "BIG Iron"
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
For the stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side slowly lookin' all around
He's an outlaw loose and running, came the whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer though a youth of 24
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and 19 more
    One and 19 more
Now the stranger started talking, made it plain to folks around
Was an Arizona ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter he was after Texas Red
    After Texas Red
Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry men that tried before were dead
20 men had tried to take him, 20 men had made a slip
21 would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet
It was 20 past 11 when they walked out in the street
Folks were watching from the windows, everybody held their breath
They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death
    About to meet his death
There was 40 feet between them when they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather 'fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on living but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
    Big iron, big iron
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
    Big iron on his hip
