I just bought my first sewing machine in January and have been watching many tutorials on how to make a memory quilt/blanket. Yours is BY FAR the easiest to understand - thank you! My goal is to make each of my three children a memory blanket by end of my maternity leave (in six months time...). I can’t wait to give this project a go, thank you 🙏
You gave me the confidence to tackle this project! I was so intimidated because I didn’t want to ruin the clothes I saved. I’m looking forward to starting it 😊
A friend has asked me to make a memory blanket from her mothers clothes who has passed away. This is a great step by step tutorial that is easy to follow. I feel I would be able to attempt this now with your great tips and guidance from start to completion, thank you.
I am an experienced quilter, and just been asked to do two little quilts from baby clothes, I chanced on your tutorial , I needed to know the process for stabilizing, but stayed to the end, Fab, you are so clear with your instructions, thank you
I’m a total novice and when my daughter asked if I could make a blanket or quilt with my grandsons first clothes silly me said of course, 😆. Watching you do yours is amazing, I’d never have known about usable interfacing or batting 😳 and honestly I didn’t even know what they were. Seeing you use them I knew I’d need them too. Thank goodness for your video, it now makes me feel confident enough to actually give it a go and know which steps to follow and what comes next in each order. Thank you so much xx
I have more sewing knowledge but I’ve never attempted quilting before. My daughter has lost her 3 week old daughter and can’t part with some of the clothes so asked me to do this. I said, I would look to see if I thought I could then give her an answer. But watching this has put all my doubts to rest, I don’t think it’s that hard. It would be a lot easier with all the fancy tools of course.
@@readingroomcafeproject I’ve managed great and really surprised myself with how well it went. I now have one happy daughter who loves to snuggle with her son close to bedtime with a memory keepsake.
This is the best video I’ve ever seen . I’m and experienced quilter who has struggled to gain all the skills that are so clearly and calmly explained here. I would recommend this video to anyone particularly new quilters. Brilliant.
Thank you so much for this. I made my son a memory blanket for Christmas, this is the most important gift I can give him. I went crazy and did a massive one, the size of a single quilt, and it took forever. It's not perfect and there are a few noticible mistakes but I am so happy with it. This was the best video I found, trust me I searched through many. The instructions were so clear and I even bought the same ribbon and a walker foot for my sewing machine. I am so happy that instead of his baby clothes in a bag in a cupboard they are now a beautiful quilt that will last forever. Again, thank you so much xxx
I've been putting off doing one of these because I thought it was going to be so difficult!! You have made it look super easy, thank you! I'm so glad I found this vid
I’ve never made a quilt in my life. Haven’t touched a sewing machine in a millennia but thanks for helping in giving me the confidence to embark on this endeavor 😊 I’m probably going to practice and make a few non baby clothes quilts first before I take scissors to my baby’s old clothes and what not 😅
This was an excellent tutorial. I’m planning on making two baby quilts for my daughter using the clothes of my son who passed away! I know it’s going to surprise my daughter! 💙… this will be my first time making quilts.
You do so well at explaining. Giving so many options and examples. Going over as many scenarios or outcomes that may be. Wow. I’m getting into sewing and I’m definitely following you.
This is the best video I have seen. I’m a total novice and your explanation and step by step process was so easy to understand. I can’t wait to make my first quilt.
THANK YOUUUUUU FINALLY AN ACTUAL EASY TUTORIAL!! Omgoodness you made this so much more easier for me. And your explanations were SUPER SIMPLE. not like other “beginner/easy” quilting. I can’t wait to make mine. I’m going to use my husband who past away, his clothes to make quilts. Thank you thank you.
I don’t even have a machine yet but the brand recommended to Me is the one you’ve got , now that being said , this has given me me the confidence to start my process of the project. Just gotta go through all my sons clothes from birth to 3 years old cause this blanket is for me 😂 but I’m excited to start and this video makes it seem really simple! ❤
This is perfect, just what I was looking for, thank you, very clear. May I ask how it stands up to washing with the interfacing, I wondered if you would need something good quality to stop any puckering if the recipient was to chuck it into a hot wash?
you are a good teacher keeping it simple. i would have like to seen yoyr mitered corners and have to touch on binding wider side vs narrower side and proper placement of it and have seen your finished binding. thx u
Iv have looked for so many tutorials for making baby quilts/blankets and they are always so over complicated, this has got to be the best tutorial, nice and easy and looks fab!!!
I just watched this video and I love how you make it so easy to understand the process and totally possible to realize this project. I'm a Mom who is working up the courage to make this for my daughter and I'm glad this is the very first video I watched to educate myself. Your calm and very clear way of explaining each step makes it enjoyable to watch even though I know making this for the first time isn't easy at all. Thanks again and more power to you!
Awesome video! I'm starting cutting the pieces for not one, but 2 memory blankets. Each kiddo will get one because both will have worn the same clothes as babies. One of those babies is 10 and the other is 5 months! 😂 So excited to be able to start working on this and keep adding to my squares as the littlest grows. Thank you for this video!
I have followed this tutorial and it is amazing. Easy to follow step by step. The end results of the quilts I have made look brilliant, thank you so much
Absolutely great tutorial for a beginner like me however would love to see more detail on how to sew the corners - do you sew both edges after doing the corner triangle folder or just sew down the next edge - how do you sew the binded corners to finish the quilt Otherwise thanks 😊 so helpful!
Thank you so much for this video, this is exactly the kind of instruction that I need when starting something new. I want to make memory quilt duvet cover for my son, do you have video on how to make duvet covers?
Hi There,I absolutely admire your video. It's crystal clear what one has to Do. I have started doing a baby quilt..it's not a memory quilt though..my kids are old and I haven't unfortunately saved anything to make it into a quilt. I have couple of questions. I use a Brother sewing machine. It's really good. But do I need a walking foot for sewing thicker layer of batting, quilt and the backing cloth together. I can imagine how thick it gets as we add layers. Also, I have fusible fleecing and I am using polycotton to make the blocks. Will it be ok to fuse the quilt blocks and fusible fleece together using n iron and it does not shrink on washing. Please answer
Beautiful job.. Thank you so much, this video is one of the easiest clearest videos I have seen so far.. Beautiful idea to keep baby clothes as a memory. Thank you again, I am a beginner in quilting, I have seen many videos but this one is the best 🎉🎉
Hi, really great tutorial, thank you. My daughter is 5 years old and I'm finally going through all her clothes to see what to keep for the quilt and what to donate. How many squares did you end up using in your quilt?
Hi there, thanks for the video it's given me great ideas. Please can you advise - among the baby clothes I use - can I possibly include knitted clothing as part of the patchwork? Thanks in advance for the advice.
I wish I would have seen this video a year ago! I’m still in the cutting and interfacing stage of my baby quilt, and I chose 4 inch squares. I used the square to cut out the interfacing then put the interfacing on the baby clothes, ironed, and cut. They’re definitely not perfectly square and am wondering if they’re going to be unusable or just a little more difficult to work with since I did it that way? My mindset was, there’s going to be overlapping to sew and I can make sure it’s square then 😬
What a fantastic tutorial! So clear and well explained! I keep meaning to turn the bags of baby clothes I have into memory quilts, tgis tutorial is so easy I will get round to it now! One question: Is the interfacing only needed for jersey fabric pieces? Thanks :) x
Thank you! Yes you only need to interface the stretch materials, but if the woven fabrics are thin you could use interface just to give them a similar thickness to the jersey squares, hope that makes sense and good luck!
Hi love ur video… thanks for taking time to explain the process. Could u tell me if there is a special stick or needle that we have to use for the T-Shirt material.
i have a ton of questions. but first let me subscribe! okay, now that i have subscribed and dinged the notification bell, i am hoping you can help me. i'm about to make a quilt using thicker fabric, as matilda jane, mini boden, and hanna andersen. My questions: do i need a different stabilizer? what kind of backing should i use? this will be a queen size blanket. i guess it's a blanket, so i'm not sure exactly how i will do this. but any answers you can give me would be greatly appreciated. i'm more of a diy crafter, but i do have the necessary tools. hope to hear from you soon !
Olive Woo you can use the same lightweight stabiliser, that is just to stop the fabric stretching. As for backing you can use whatever you like best! If you can find anything large enough you can join your fabric for the backing! Hope that helps 😊
When you fold over the binding and then fold it back to the straight edge do you restitch over that straight edge before turning and sewing along the next side?
Could I just use a fleece blanket as a bottom layer instead of the wadding. So 2 layers. One top with clothing squares and one bottom with fleece blanket?
Thank you so much for your video I’ve almost finished I just need to do the binding. Where did you get your binding as I’m struggling to find a wide one.
Hello ! I find your tutorial useful for reusing my baby cloth. One of the detailed video I have seen so far! I will give it a try and share you pic soon 👍🏻Thank you ! You made my day 😊
Hi. Once you have pulled the binding and clipped the binding to the front of the quilt, how are you sewing the corners? Are you simply just sewing all the way around because the folding was completed on the backside?
Hi Charlie! Love the video! We are moving, and I would like to lessen the bulk of our baby clothes by cutting the squares for the blanket. But I will only be making the actual blanket somewhere in the future, must I iron on the fusible lightweight interfacing now, or can it wait to just before I plan on sewing it? And is it possible to add a knitted square to the pile?
Hi, thanks Chane, it is better to apply the interfacing before you cut, however you could cut them roughly for now, getting rid of the bulky bits that you won’t need, then when you have time you can apply the interfacing and cut them to final size later. I hope that helps and good luck with the move!
I used a single layer for the backing, along with the wadding and quilt top of course, making three layers in total for your finish quilt. Hope that makes sense!
Thank you for the lovely tutorial. But could you give a tutorial on how to decide the size of the squares? And could we talk in cm and not in inches? For example. I'm making a 70x100cm baby quilt. How big should I make my squares to make sure I have a 5cm border with the back fabric and enough seam allowance for everything (i.e. the squares and the back fabric)? Thanks!
Brilliant!.. so clear and easy to follow.. I have the confidence to give it a go now .. thankyou!.. Just one question.. can knitted clothes be added or is it better not to?.. 😊

I have a question for you... When you are sewing the individual squares together do you have to backstitch? Like when you sew two squares together and not rows?
By far best tutorial I have seen. I have been following along and I’m half way through my daughters blanket :)
That’s brilliant to hear! :)
Thanks for leaving this comment it's the encouragement I needed to start mine

Thanks Sandra!

I got mine from amazon, but any good haberdashers should stock it. Thanks 😃
Love this! I want to do this, however I don’t have a sewing machine… would it be possible to hand sew this?
This is a great tutorial .. thank you ... could I ask you to give a tutorial on finishing the corners on the binding please ? Thank you 😊
Hello ! I find your tutorial useful for reusing my baby cloth. One of the detailed video I have seen so far! I will give it a try and share you pic soon 👍🏻Thank you ! You made my day 😊

Thanks, that helps a lot! Another question; if I have a few knitted pieces, how would I go about adding them?
For the backing fabric does it all have to be one piece or could i stitch together a few smaller blankets that i have and then use it as one piece?
Massively helpful. Thank you 🙂
You are welcome, thanks for watching! 😊
Thank you 🥰
Beautiful quilt! Did you cut the bedding set so it is 1 layer or keep it whole? Thank you
I used a single layer for the backing, along with the wadding and quilt top of course, making three layers in total for your finish quilt. Hope that makes sense!
Thanks for the great video!
Do you have a list of all the things required to make this please. Great video!
Lovely tutorial, but how do you finish the corners ??
Loved the tutorial ❤️
Love it!
Excellent thank you so much
Gary Fowler thanks for watching! 😊
Thanks!
Really great tutorial.Thank you so much
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching ☺️
You could chain stitch squares together?
Brilliant!.. so clear and easy to follow.. I have the confidence to give it a go now .. thankyou!..
Just one question.. can knitted clothes be added or is it better not to?.. 😊
You can always try and experiment with knits, it will be more delicate for washing etc so just bare that in mind, but the same principles apply. Good luck!
Im making 1 for my gr grandaughter and will be using jelly roll for the 2" sepsrators between squares. wish me luck
Could you post pictures of how ypu folded corners when folding over to the front? I couldn't quit figure out the last corner
Would it be okay to use fleece instead as the backing?
Love this! I am a complete beginner as in I'm still waiting for my machine to arrive! But this is so helpful. Can I ask what oz the wodding is please? Thank you
Jodey Field-Thomas Hi Jodey, for this quilt I used Hobbs Premium cotton batting, thanks so much for the feedback, happy quilting!
This was a brilliant tutorial thank you, Just 2 questions, How thick was your batting and what width ribbon did you use for the edge please, :)
I have a question for you... When you are sewing the individual squares together do you have to backstitch? Like when you sew two squares together and not rows?
Amazing. Would this blanket be able to be made with a minky dimple back at all? Do you think? Thanks
Thank you for this tutorial it’s very helpful. What is the measurement of your binding please .
Can you make a tutorial how to use the sewing machine!😭 I’m completely new at this I’m trying to make a quilt for my daughter’s first birthday!
