  • Conceptual Artist Gala Porras-Kim takes the practice of collecting, conserving and exhibiting objects as the subject of her work, which highlights the way these institutionalized actions inadvertently create new meanings. Often taking the form of lusciously rendered, large-scale drawings of catalogued collections, her work also employs materials such as dust, efflorescing concrete, and mold spores.
On December 12, 2023, following a screening of the film "Gala Porras-Kim: The Living Collection" (2023), Porras-Kim joined Sanchita Balachandran, Director of the Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum to explore questions this body of work raises about contemporary conservation practices. This program was presented as part of the Getty Conservation Institute’s Art in L.A. project, which studies the materials and fabrication processes of LA-based artists since the 1950s and the implications these materials and processes have for conservation. "Gala Porras-Kim: The Living Collection" is the latest film in Art in L.A.’s Artist Dialogues film series. The series engages artists in conversations exploring their art, materials, fabrication processes and working methods, as well as their thoughts on conservation.
