This is video #3 in a new garment sew along series where I will teach you how to make my Westchester Dolman Top step-by-step, one video at a time. To get the most out of this free series I suggest watching each video in it's entirety so you don't miss out on any pertinent information throughout this video series.
You can bookmark this page for all the details and videos in this sew along: craftygemini.c...
I recommend beginning with a fabric that has some spandex in it and at least 50% stretch along both the crosswise and lengthwise grain.
Use the hashtag: #WestchesterDolmanTop when you post pics on social media so we can see what you are up to.
    Thanks for watching!

Hi Vanessa - I have this mental image of being in Sewing college right in my bedroom. I appreciate how much time and effort you have put into preparing to teach us all about fabric and how to use it. I'm 70 and see it's never too late to learn more about a craft my mom taught me when I was 10! And you do this while raising two beautiful children and caretaking a homestead. Blessings!

Oh my Vanessa, my head is swimming with knowledge. Now I know why my tops and dresses fit the way they did. In the past, I did not consider measurements along with pattern and fabric. I did not know to test knit stretch lengthwise and crosswise. I have the wrong fabric for this project! That's okay because this is a learning process. Plus it gives me an excuse to go back to JoAnns. Thank you so much for doing this.

Awesome video, very helpful. There's a lot to learn, but as always, you break it down into easy to understand step by step directions so I'm sure it will work out great. I've gathered my CraftyGemini tools and my DBP is washed and ready to go. Thank you Vanessa!

Oh Vanessa, I learned so much in this video! You are a wonderful teacher. I have attempted to sew myself blouses and never paid attention to the recommended fabrics and was so discouraged about my outcome. You have rekindled my excitement to try again with your help. I needed this lesson and appreciate your in sight about fabrics! Thank you! Thank you! 😀 Dotty

I love your videos! I have always had a love/hate relationship with sewing garments. I made the Butterick 6214 top using your methods and loved it! I made 5 of them. Now I am looking forward to making the Westchester Dolman top. Having said that, though, I do wish you would have a tutorial on making adjustments to the neck opening. I like a little more conservative opening. Not so wide. Other than that, I look forward to watching every one of your videos. Thanks so much!

I know there are tons of fabrics out there, but I’m wondering if you can help me. What is the fabric that a lot of women’s dressier tops are made out of? You know the tops that have that spandex feeling that feel a bit like panty hose material. I hope I made sense. That is the type of fabric I do NOT like. It’s one of those fingernails on a chalkboard feeling to me lol.

I'm finally going to make a Westchester Dolman top!! I'm using a double brushed poly spandex fabric (85% poly, 15% spandex). Will this fabric work for the neckband and sleeve bands? Thank you for the video!!

Was wondering if the neck band can be cut on the bias? Wasn’t sure since knit seems to curl. Seems like that would give the flattest neckband.

What would happen if you pulled out the topstitching on the black and white top? Would the radiating lines be less of a problem?

Hi enjoyed this lesson in knit fabrics. I am in MD and I am new to sewing so I find it hard to understand what would work for a project. I realize some of this will be trail and error. Also I dont know like if there is more that JoAnn Fabric store in my neck of the woods. I feel like I spend alot of time looking online at fabric stores. Any advice for online shopping when you cant see or touch the fabric in person?

I would like to make the Westchester Dolman. I am 5'10". Would I be want to grade this to lengthen through waist or just add a couple inches to the bottom? Confident beginner.

After my last comment I went into my closet and found that 90% of my tops and dresses are a rayon spandex blend. That’s the feeling of fabric I gravitate towards. I have a few dresses in my closet that are a polyester spandex and that’s the material I was talking about in my last comment that I do not like. I wear it if I have to for a specific occasion that calls for a “dressier” dress, but I despise the feeling on my skin lol. If I were to shop online for fabric what are those poly spandex fabrics marketed as. Are there any specific names I should be looking for? Or will it just say 95% Poly 5% Spandex etc...also would a rayon spandex blend be ok for a beginner?

Vanessa, you are so good at explaining technical things! I'm sorry to bring this up, but I don't like polyester! Polyester is made from petroleum, something they are digging up from the earth &, causing huge environmental problems. It puts micro bits in our water supply, which winds up in our bodies, and the bodies of all creatures on our planet, causing cancer and many other problems. Lets buy fabrics made from cotton, silk, and wool, with minimal amounts of spandex. They are more expensive, but will also wash and wear longer.
