I’m so glad other people sew extra fabric in seam. I was watching a Korean sew clothes an he tacked a stronger thread in the corner of collar and when he turned the collar he pulled the thread it came out to a point. Pretty cool.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that has extra fabric get sewn in where it wasn't supposed to. I swear a project is not complete until it happens to me at least once 🤦♀️ Thank you so much for the wonderful video!
I'm making a 6018 right now (my second actually) and I'm watching your video and then OMG GREYHOUND!!! My beautiful grey Violet likes to sleep on my sewing room floor to keep me company!
I absolutely love channels like this! I love to sew and create but I'm quite honestly horrible at it, so this is a fun way for me to consider if I really want to try my next project or not (making a dress for myself - I'm a larger woman so making a dress is the best way for me to make sure it fits me properly AND is something I love). You're so creative and talented!
CataclysmicStar I'm the same, but as they say, practice makes perfect. I still have the first shirt I made 20 years ago, which looks ok on the outside, but the inside leaves a lot to be desired. The best part of sewing it yourself is that you can alter the fit to suit your body. Happy sewing
The, slightly too much ease, could be due to fact that 1950 style considered the bulk of wearing girdles and cotton slips. Many women did. Skirt hems would have been turned up 2-3 inchs. That is your, too long skirt, if you are using 1/2 in. hem. Those cuffs would look good with fake cufflinks, made with buttons, sewn on the wings. Maybe reinforce emergency center back bodice seam, with hemtape, sewn flat underneath it and topstitched. In 50's I replaced some side zippers in ready made dresses because they were too short for easy removal of garment. These days we get $1 sheets at thrift store to use for practice construction and altering.
This was one of the first dresses I ever made (about 6 years ago)! I still have it, wear it often, and it fits pretty well for a commercial pattern, and to this day, I still get compliments on it!
Three years late to the party but as a beginning sewer I'm encouraged to see you make little goofs like not cutting on the fold and such (your girl here has a tendency to sew one of her skirt seams inside out when not working with a fabric that has an identifiable wrong side).
We use plastic drop cloths to trace out patterns. Use a sharpie to trace everything and it's super easy to see through! You want the 1 mm thickness, or as close to it as you can get.
Excuse my denseness, but how do you trace onto thick, opaque material like that...if you put the sheer pattern on top, you can’t draw on the plastic. If you put the pattern on bottom, you can’t see it through the opaque dropcloth....
oh i love it! i think the collar totally works for the dress...it probably feels huge because its white but contrast is awesome...im a misser of 'cut on fold'...no one ever knows and i dont mind seams..hehe, esp cuz im too lazy to to recut...tfs:)
Fancy not cutting the back on the fold, said the kettle to the pot. I don't know any sewer who has not done this a least once 😀😊😊😊😊. I had to do it a number of times when I didn't have enough material to sew on the fold, but had enough if I sewed the back in two pieces. Just discovered you channel, so Bing watching 👍
God bless you! My great grandma said to use paper bags for patterns since they aren’t as delicate as the regular pattern paper. I love seeing you do the same!
Omg - I love you! I choose this pattern, for my college final major project! I’m hoping it comes out good as a 50’s style deku dress! The pattern is way out of my league so Thankyou for this!!!!
I have a question. If this is a mock up and you (smartly I might add) kept the original pattern intact, for a finished garment, would you consider just making a smaller size?
Possibly, although now that I have made one functional dress, I never did go back and make a second! If I did though, I think I would cut the same size, to keep the room for my bust, and just tailor the waist one size down.
Morgan the shapeshifter! : ) I realize there was not 3 or 4 different women in this video, but it looked like it to me. I have a degree of facial blindness, so I tend to focus on things like clothing and hairstyle (as well as voices and one's posture and gait) as much more prominent factors in identifying people. Imagine a tutorial/walk through video where the host suddenly becomes a different person, with the same voice. Loved it! And the dress... I clicked on it because the dress is a cute style, and I'm happy to see that it's likely within reach for my experience and patience.
Oh god this is exactly the type of dress I'm going to try to make! I'm trying for a 50's diner dress, specifically the RR Diner uniform from Twin peaks :D Thank you Morgan!
Love this pattern, I made both models and they are easy to make and wear very comfortibly. I am a lot longer than you so I didn't have the problem with the waistline Yours looks lovely!!!
Oh My Gosh! That dress is so figure flattering. Was it true to size? It made me smile to see you make some of the mistakes I make. However, you took it more in stride than I do and just moved on with it Great video!
5:10 ugh...yep. Tried to pleat a skirt. At least ten times. My measurements kept getting off so ihad to keep getting more fabric and resizing the pleats.
You look really nice in that dress, I think your next one will be fantastic, I agree with the collar is a little big, but you could downsize it, I think because it is white it really is contrasty, maybe not so big looking if it was a dark color? Every mistake you made in sewing, I make on every project I do, I'm always unpicking something, I tell myself, the more I unpick, the greater the end product will be!
Love your channel! Had a question about the butcher paper you used. I ordered the one listed in your bio and (maybe it’s an old link and the product has changed) but it’s way too thick to trace. Any suggestions on a good alternative?
I love this dress and I am about to attempt on making one for myself (first real project) but I was wondering (if you don't mind me asking) What size did you use? It seems based on my measurements that I'll be needing to go for a size that is MUCH bigger than what I usually buy. Thank you
Eman D I believe I used size 14, which according to the measurements listed, that should have been on the slightly too-tight side, but there's enough ease built into the pattern that it fit fine. So you might be OK with going a inch or two smaller than your own measurements. Hope that helps! Good luck!
Morgan you are so talented! What beautiful feminine dress. I would love to be able to make my own clothing but unfortunately I dont know where to start and find it so overwhelming! Can I ask....how did you learn dressmaking? x
Being new to sewing, I’ve noticed that the sizes in the pattern don’t match up to real life body measurements. So every time I’ve tried to sew something it doesn’t fit me. How do you go about picking the right size for yourself with a pattern?
I found the collar on this one to be a little troublesome too. It just sort of sits funny once the dress is done :/ If you are having trouble getting the collar lining sewn in, perhaps try searching for videos on "collar lapel facing" for some good visuals on how to proceed. Best of luck!
I just found you and love your video. This dress was amazing and you did such a good job! I think it's gorgeous on you. Appreciate your voice overs and instructions. You have a new subscriber! Big Hugs
I'm currently making this dress, and I think I've watched this video five times for pointers. This latest watching is because I've managed to lose the pattern piece for the cuffs, and I want to make sure I'm on the right track for drafting a replacement.
Kristina, you don't need a dress form to fit a mock-up, but it does help to have a friend to help pin in the seams that are too loose or big. I often don't have a friend available for that purpose, so I will put on the mock-up and then take pictures from several angles to see what needs modification.
Center back on fold is very easy to forget. When I trace the pattern, I draw through the edge line and cut the new pattern piece out with additional margin. It helps. Strangely, I often write "cut on fold" although after adding margin, I don't cut it. How the brain works.
gil reznik, If I had been working for more than just a couple hours at a time, I probably could have finished it in 2 days. But since I only worked on it here and there, I think it took about a week and a half?
I'm so happy that I found your video ! I wil try to make this dess with longer sleeves to achieve a cosplay of a student of Beauxbatons in Harry Potter. I hope I will succeed ! ^^
I used my thin brown paper, traced over a white table, with a very well-lit room. All of that helped me be able to see through the paper and trace! If your pattern is not printed dark enough to trace through, then I recommend getting different paper to trace on. Something like this looks like it might be thin enough: amzn.to/2CW6V9t
Another option when tracing is to tape the original to a glass door, and tape the copy paper over it. The light coming through the door helps make things much more visible.
Ahaha I've cut on a back fold so many times, even on patterns I made myself :D In my experience, western storebought patterns nearly always have an *insane* amount of bodice ease for the size they tell me to buy. Now I just open the pattern to look at the "finished garment measurements" printed on the bust and waist of the centre front pieces, and choose my size based on that, giving myself about 2" of ease; it's usually 2 sizes lower than the size chart tells me to take. It's not quite 100% accurate but it yields much better results than their sizing chart :/ (A few years ago before I started doing this, I mocked up an old mid-2000's Simplicity dress with a drawing and description of a "fitted" bodice, and it had around 4" of bust east on EACH SIDE (so like... 8" of bust ease?? It was a tent!) I gave up and made my own pattern for that one)
I’m so glad other people sew extra fabric in seam. I was watching a Korean sew clothes an he tacked a stronger thread in the corner of collar and when he turned the collar he pulled the thread it came out to a point. Pretty cool.

The dress is totally adorable and you look so cute in it.
Thank you Rose!
It is sooooo comforting to know even pros have trouble with commercial patterns!

This was great I learned how to save a pattern from your video I am going to buy some brown paper. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Coral Rose excellent, I am glad it was helpful!

I love this 'making a vintage dress' with 'I'm wearing a modern Pokemon jacket' going toguether

Nice job!! I always have that short back waist wrinkle problem. I’m learning to make my own patterns. Now if I can just get my measurements right...!!
Beautiful dress and lovely sleeves and collar. Your dogs are wonderful.
I do love watching your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I’m new to loving old fashions and techniques

I really like the collar! Reminds me of the one on the dress in Sleeping Beauty
Greyhound friends! I love the fabric you chose. Perfect for the holidays!
Oh My Gosh! That dress is so figure flattering. Was it true to size? It made me smile to see you make some of the mistakes I make. However, you took it more in stride than I do and just moved on with it Great video!
Aww, thank you! The sizing was pretty good, maybe ever so slightly more ease than I would have liked, but not enough to be a big deal.
Love your greys! It's reassuring to see that other people make the same mistakes that I do.
Loved the video and I love the dress! I think the collar is perfect. The color is too. Thank you for sharing.
It's adorable I love the colours!

I realy like the dress! Also the fabric is beautifull for this dress
I love this video and I LOVE that you have a greyhound!!
Eleine Sun yay! Greyhounds are the best ♡
Very cute! Nothing like making a mock-up to get it right.
The dress is super cute and fits you well.
Now that is a lovely dress on you. Pearl earrings and a little black purse!

the nails at the beginning of this video are my favorite ever
Hi, what was the yardage of the fabric for your size?
Im having difficulty with the collar on this piece. Is there any way you could go over what it's supposed to look like specifically?
I found the collar on this one to be a little troublesome too. It just sort of sits funny once the dress is done :/ If you are having trouble getting the collar lining sewn in, perhaps try searching for videos on "collar lapel facing" for some good visuals on how to proceed. Best of luck!

You look really nice in that fabric, cute dress love it
Hi, quick question, what size did you use for this dress? What are your measurements (if you don't mind me asking!)?
I am afraid I do not recall, but it was likely size 12 or 14.
Spotty dog: Adore me!!!!! .... Spotty dog 2.5 seconds later: Enough, I have important things to do!
I like that one! I don't have the patience for sewing. I wish I did.
Love your sewing area what y shared. Y have excellent skills

I'm so happy that I found your video !
I wil try to make this dess with longer sleeves to achieve a cosplay of a student of Beauxbatons in Harry Potter.

Anyone do a Full Bust Adjustment for the sweetheart bodice in this? I found it kinda tricky. Any tips?
I am doing the same with the collared version. If you have not already solved your problems what are you specifically having trouble with?
Pretty darn cute!
how did you trace it ? because most of my patterns are not dark enough to see through the paper ?
I used my thin brown paper, traced over a white table, with a very well-lit room. All of that helped me be able to see through the paper and trace! If your pattern is not printed dark enough to trace through, then I recommend getting different paper to trace on. Something like this looks like it might be thin enough: amzn.to/2CW6V9t

Another option when tracing is to tape the original to a glass door, and tape the copy paper over it. The light coming through the door helps make things much more visible.
Is not one option to place the pattern on top and trace the lines with a pin wheel?
Thank you I enjoyed this have the pattern and this has helped me thanks again
Ohhh your dress turned out great :3, I love your dogs too hahahaha, hey would you say this pattern is suitable for beginners?
It was not very complicated, I think I recall the instructions being fairly easy to understand. Maybe Beginner-Intermediate?
Great job

this is not in anyway related to the adorable dress, but i love your goofy noodle babies at the end!
I miss this vibe
I want to learn to braid my hair like that
I love the collet. Not so much the back where it bunches up.
I’m trying to make this but the sleeves cuffs are so confusing to me I can’t understand it to save my life 😭 please someone help
And your dogs are beautjful
Very cute
i was just looking at this pattern...
I love this dress so much!
But I must admit it kind of looks like a school uniform with the white collar and cuffs lol
That us so pretty
Very pretty all the same
WOW!!!
I want to turn the collar into a sailor collar
Lovely fabric and dress, however it reminds me of school uniforms.
No project is complete if you haven't picked out a deal or two!
I clicked because plaid
read before cutting lol
Definitely my goal for next time! 😉
