@tuppytheducky is there a Canon explanation for how those stravag aquatic dogs *have* that much production capacity? Did they steal old WoB industrial facilities? Did they find a Star Forge?
@@philippauli8162 if I remember correctly it’s a mistake by Catalyst, and as it’s all new lore still being written I’m sure it’ll be corrected or explained in future publications
This is a great mech chassis to make into a heavy scout, just add some targeting and comms equipment with stealth retooling and voila. It has real capacity for light hunting, and can be used as an effective flanker / harasser as well as for disrupting fire support units foolish enough to be left unguarded. It is also about the only real option for dealing with 'off board' artillery in anything approaching a timely manner when air support and aerial reconnaissance is unavailable.
I'm catching up on older videos I missed and low and behold I see you made a video on one of my favorite medium mechs in the game, highlighting just how colorfully crazy the Jade Falcons are! A medium mech with medium mech armor, the firepower of an inner sphere mid sized heavy and the speed of a light, it's easy to miss just how dangerous this machine is on the table top. It can run down virtually anything lighter than it, outrun anything it can't handle, harrass and flank most targets and easily get behind a bigger opponent . Seeing as how the JF don't mind physical attacks now, it can be a very dangerous charge monkey! For me now all I need to do is collect a star of these mutant flightless birds... A great job as always, keep up the good work!
I agree. It's such a dynamic machine that really allows for creative and flexible combat, especially for those quick raids into flanks, objectives and back lines. They're really hard to pin down. While I hate their ideology, I really do love CJF's mechs. I'm hoping Catalyst Game Labs creates faction specific box sets so I can pick up multiple copies of the machine.
Yup As soon as I tried it I loved it. As soon as I saw A. I swapped out the PPC for the Large Pulse, then the downgraded the two Med Lasers too ER so I could upgrade the lot with a targeting computer. It gave all the lasers more or less the same range and the ability to target wounded locations actively. I put targeting computers on everything I rode around in. Never went without it.
I honestly love the Black Lanner and I love paring it with a Stormcrow in a sort of tandem attack, where I make them double team heavier mechs than itself with generally good results... Also the new CGL design is pretty sexy
The AC10 BLanner was my go-to for mid/late game fire support in Mechwarrior Living Legends (if i wasnt already running a Catapult or Argus). I usually would run alongside the heavier friendlies and knock the arms or side torsos out on the enemy while they were focusing our heavier brawlers. I loved how the speed let me do my hit and run attacks and escape (most of the time).
im fairly new and have been trying to make a lance of just reverse leg mechs with plane like cockpits and no arms stuff like catapult, raven, stalker, etc. The Black Lanner was my choice for a medium and I went with the X variant for fun and it ended up being the MVP of my first match with it. i love it a lot now and intend to make it one of if not my first battletech mini purchase :3
It’s funny you mention the H and not like heavy large lasers, I brought an H to a game recently and the HLL actually managed to headshot a Stormcrow when it closed to use its UAC/20 on me. It was pretty much untouched minus some minor laser fire. I went on to crush the rest of his forces because I was a bit of an asshole and brought a Turkina (not the Z variant)
So hurt by this slander of the I variant! It is definitely in my top three of the Lanner configurations, just due to the absolute insane consistency the targeting computer adds, and the crazy benefits of closing with 3 heavy MGs into a rear arc, or chewing through vehicles. It just does the same job of the D in a very strange, but more consistent, way. I definitely recommend you taking it to the table, I think it may change your mind!
Hey Mech Frog, I know info is limited, but any chance you would feel like doing a video or series on the status of the great houses, Rasalhague Dominion & maybe even the Clans as we march into the Ilclan era?
War of Reaving when a clan suffering ptsd due to artillery goes nuts. As the the Lanner i got beat by a pair of these due to their sheer speed. Sucks when your lights just get run down by this thing.
The E is well over 1800 at 2331BV I do feel we need a BV 3 system that re-values many of the items including a completed rebuild of the speed cost multiplier for mechs. BV 2 works fine for 3025 but not for more advanced settings / tech. Plus it needs to be a living system that is updated one to twice a year and only hosted on the website for people to opt into using so they don't need to reprint every thing.
i had dismissed the black lanner as overengined but i see its utility after this video, my takeaway is this mech should be used as a light hunter/light support. it might lose to my all-time favorite mech, the stormcrow, in a one-on-one fight. hope to see you feature the stormcrow one day!
I'm quite sure most Stormcrow variants would eat the Black Lanner's lunch. Definitely different design roles in mind for the two. Nice to have the choice though!
@@MechanicalFrog Ah shame. Love your vids tho (just recently got into BT). That background music combined with the smooth narration is real relaxing lol.
I mean, I would actually argue FOR orbital bombardment in carefully selective use with nukes as emergency options. Especially for how the Clanners could have tried to fight the Inner Sphere better.

I hate the old art for this and feel like it's far too over engined. It would be pretty wicked with MPL's and SRM configuration but you are paying too much BV for speed. I'd love to pit it against a Stormcrow or Vulture and see how it matches up.
I'm fairly sure a Stormcrow would obliterate most of the Black Lanners pretty quickly. The Mad Dog might have more of an issue due to heat, ammo, and that +1 to hit penalty for the BL's zoom zoom.
I love the Lanner, but the Heavy Laser has always felt like a worse PPC. Especially the Large Laser. I'd rather stick to ER and Pulses. ER Pulse lasers if I'm wanting to be fancy and generate a lot of heat.
@@MechanicalFrog Yes, one of my favorite Clan machines, albeit a bit heavier than the Lanner: The Glass Spider 2. Two LPLs, two MPLs, and a targeting computer. Some highly accurate fire there.

The original artwork for the Black Lanner is horrible, it seems to be looking at the sky or outright toppling backwards. Nice idea for dynamics, bad for an image supposed to depict a new combat robot to an audience. Piranha Games did a really nice redesign and so much better art for it. Hitboxes are decend too. Overall, i like the design.
Dwayne Loose has commented on Twitter about having a no-straight line phase. I have a fondness for the original art but can admit the angle is a bit silly and doesn't represent the mech very well.
@@MechanicalFrog Nothing wrong with "no straight line" phases, they can result in great art. But IMO his Black Lanner looked horrible.
