  • I want my cheese slicer back :(
I am so happy to finally get this video posted! I didn't expect such a long delay between videos, but traveling made it hard to upload.
During the past month, I traveled to Pennsylvania and Alabama to visit my sisters. Along the way, I tried to find as many Swedish things as I could. In this video, I show you everything I found!
In Philadelphia, PA, I went to the American Swedish Historical Museum.
There's apparently a Swedish festival in Thorsby, Alabama?! Maybe next year...
Bonus: I went to the first IKEA in the USA... or did I?!?! This is still up for debate.

You should save the jewelry box in the condition you bought it in and have it valued. I’m not an expert, but I think the signature on the bottom of the box indicates that it can be valuable.

    •  2 роки тому +6

The Swank Jewelry Box is apparently somewhat of a collectors item and other boxes of the same brand goes for around 40-80 USD online. So... 0,64 USD was a steal!

One story about forbidden coffee is that coffee was thought to be toxic so to prove this, a prisoner was forced to drink coffee every day, the problem became that he grew very old and lived longer than any of the coffee-poisoned believers.did.

From Wikipedia - New Sweden article
New Sweden (Swedish: Nya Sverige; Finnish: Uusi Ruotsi; Latin: Nova Svecia) was a Swedish colony along the lower reaches of the Delaware River in America from 1638 to 1655, established during the Thirty Years' War when Sweden was a great military power. New Sweden formed part of the Swedish efforts to colonize the Americas. Settlements were established on both sides of the Delaware Valley in the region of Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, often in places where Swedish traders had been visiting since about 1610. Fort Christina in Wilmington, Delaware, was the first settlement, named after the reigning Swedish monarch. The settlers were Swedes, Finns, and a number of Dutch. New Sweden was conquered by the Dutch Republic in 1655 during the Second Northern War and incorporated into the Dutch colony of New Netherland.

      From Wikipedia Kalmar Nyckel article
Kalmar Nyckel (Key of Kalmar) was a Swedish ship built by the Dutch famed for carrying Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to establish the colony of New Sweden. The name Kalmar Nyckel comes from the Swedish city of Kalmar and nyckel meaning key in Swedish. The name was also a tribute to Kalmar Castle which was a symbol of power during the time of the Swedish Empire when Sweden was a military great power.
A replica of the ship was launched at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1997.

The box marked "Swank" on the bottom was likely retailed by the men's jewelry retailer of the same name and was used for storing cuff links, studs, tie clips, tie bars, bracelets, etc. I wouldn't destroy the inside of the box until you know if there are collectors out there who would pay for that. My mother went to an estate sale and bought a Lanvin necklace for $25 and my sister later sold it for $2,400 on Etsy after Kiera Knightly was seen wearing it. Of course, it's yours now and you can do what you want, but sometimes it pays to check things out before dismissing it for its lack of value.

Swedich Match Is a Swedish company that was previously called Tändstiks bolgat, for a period they were the only ones who made safety matches. This made them world leaders in matches and they were for a period Sweden's largest company and it was extremely important for the Swedish economy. The stock market crash in the late 1920s hit the company extremely hard and if I remember correctly, its founder then committed suicide. Today, the company is not as important to the Swedish economy as it was before. But is still a relatively large company and they make most of the snus sold in Sweden, they also have other tobacco products. They have employees in nine countries so the company you are talking about can very well be part of Swedich Match.

There is a village in Sweden named Torsby. Probably where ”Thorsby” comes from.

Aren't there like a dozen Torsby in sweden?
Same way there are a dozen or so Västervik, Ryd and Stenåkra.

@@johanf9279 Not quite. There's one in Värmland and one in Värmdö, Stockholm. There's also a Torsby Socken in Bohuslän.
And two Torsby in Finland, and although that's not Sweden, Sweden might be part of the reason they were named Torsby given the long time the two were one country. :)

Alabama Isent really Swede habitat. There is a reason a lot of our emigrant siblings ended up in The northern Midwest. Funny a lot also ended up in Washington. Would probably have gone in that direction myself if I went, the winters sound scary in Minnesota.

Swedish Autotech is probably a Saab and/or Volvo mechanic. There was a similarly-named place where I used to live.

Kindo similar to how Christmas was banned in the US back in the colonial era.
Banned for over 20 years by the puritans!

Ja, svenskt kaffe är bäst! Och speciellt Zoega's kaffe. Sen att Maria Zoega drev företaget på 1800-talet( i min hemstad Helsingborg) efter hennes make dog, gör att det smakar ännu bättre. 💪☕

Coffe wasn't banned once, they actually did it several times (first started 1756 and the last ended in 1823) and they was about as usefull as the Prohibition was in the United States (although created a bit less organized crime).

If I remember correctly, it is a power struggle between the nobility and the bourgeoisie. They punished each other with different laws that affected one group proportionally much more. Coffee was an example of something that was almost only consumed by one group.
