Kris was a Rhodes Scholar and an US Army helicopter pilot . He has had a very interesting life . Too many things to mention here . ✌🏼❤️☕
And his dad was a major general too
Not unlike Jim Morrison, but, far more disciplined and talented in my opinion.
Kris Kristofferson is a genius,if you don't react to "Sunday morning coming down" your doing yourself a huge disservice
You must hear his Why Me, Lord?
Most definitely!!!
Kris is a brilliant song writer….he’s written more hits than, maybe, any country star. Great rabbit hole to go down.
@Robert Hoffman, sorry Robert, Kris is #4 on the Top Ten Country Songwriters of all time.
#10---Steve Earle
#9-----Guy Clarke
#8-----Waylon Jennings
#7-----Dolly Parton
#6-----Townes Van Zandt
#5-----Willie Nelson
#4-----Kris Kristofferson
#3-----Johnny Cash
#2-----Hank Williams, Sr.
#1-----Merle Haggard
This report came out in 2014, so there could be some changes, but, I don't think Kris has become the most prolific country songwriter ever.
@@patriciakeith6755 Well, I did say maybe….😊….for my money I think his songwriting beats everybody, except, maybe, Dolly. You know music is so personal some people claim McCartney and Lennon are the best pop songwriters of all time….I’ll take Paul Simon over them any day of the week…..thanks for the list Pat.
@@sorrystaunton thanks for your insight into your opinion. It is greatly appreciated to get feedback from someone who doesn't resort to name-calling and abusive language. I used to be a huge Beatles fan, but hated that their coming spelled the doom for all the very good singers from the fifties to the mid sixties so I have to agree here with Bob Segar's Old Time Rock and Roll. Keep safe.
@@patriciakeith6755 Amen Pat….loved the Beatles, although I thought the Searchers had a great impact and never got the credit. Listen to the guitar playing by the Byrds than listen to John play lead on his Rickenbacker for the Searchers. Some great acts got shafted because of the British Invasion, Dion and Bobby Rydell come to mind. I agree, people today cannot disagree or have another opinion without a shouting match breaking out. Maybe at 72 I’m mellowing…..,great having a little conversation with you Pat….be well
@@sorrystaunton, I'm rally about to catch up with you age wise. I've been listening to a lot of reaction channels and love that people a lot younger than us are finally discovering the great music of our teen years. They are listening to old and new country, rock n roll, doo-wop, R&B, Motown and the British Invasion groups. If you haven't seen any of these reactions channels, give them a try. Patricia
Sunday Morning Ciming Down is one of many other greats from Chris. He truly is a lyric genius!
Sunday Morning Coming Down is one of the greatest lyrics ever. The Johnny Cash version is the best, but Waylon Jennings version is great too.
I was going to suggest this one. He truly is a songwriting genius!
Why me Lord was my favorite.
@@christyshultz6443 I love that one, too!
it's Kris but a great comment you post. btw check my classic rock Playlist on my channel. it's youtubes largest but I never made their search list.
Kris was a Rhodes Scholar and it shows in his lyrics. The greatest song writer since Hank Williams.EVERY song he writes is like this.
Rhodes Scholar.? . Wow.. Cool!
Kris was a Rhodes Scholar, a captain and helicopter pilot who was also a Ranger in the Army. He was scheduled to become an English literature professor at West Point but he resigned his commission because he wanted to move to Nashville to write songs. Wound up sweeping floors at Columbia Records where he met Johnny and June Cash….the rest is history. His father was not happy, his father was a general in the Army and felt Kris was wasting his life. Kris is 85 now and retired. React to his top ten you’ll enjoy the ride.
He was also part of that Outlaw Country. I think he was part of The Highway Men, with Willie Nelson etc..
@@jewls9697 Yes he was…
He wrote "Me and Bobby Mcgee" he sung it but Janis Joplin made it hers just before she died, he also wrote Sunday Morning coming down that was performed by Johnny Cash...so many hits,
That's cuz it was written for her LOL cuteness though cuz they were very adorable and when they were together.
I second Why Me Lord!
Love Kris Kristopherson. Another song writer who has an amazing way with lyrics is Mickey Newbury. He put together the three songs of “An American Trilogy” while singing in a concert. Other well known examples of his songs are “San Francisco’s Mable Joy”, “ Sweet Memories”, and my favorite “Corteiia Clark”; which is about an old blues man that Mickey met in Nashville. He was a good friend of Kris Kristopherson and knew many of the musicians of his era. Of course, I recommend you check him out. I enjoy your show, thanks!
The whole Silver Tongue Devil is awesome! Give a listen to the title track- one of my favorites.
My favorite songwriter ever. Read about this life, incredible story. True Renaissance man. Check out the little know song Billy Dee.
He is a Rhodes scholar with degree in English Literature that's why he has great lyrics.
He’s also a Road Scholar
I was arrested in 2019 for doing something dumb while I was drunk and I paid the price. While i was in a jail cell I sang this song constantly while I cried constantly... jail is very scary and I hope everyone never has to go through it... dont be like I was and pay the price when it's to late! I'm truly not a bad guy but some will judge me no matter what. I paid my debt but some will judge me for a mistake im truly sorry for... god bless you all and have a great New Year! Happy 2023.
And may God bless you as well. We all make mistakes, and it seems some of us never have to pay. We should not judge each other, leave that to the Almighty as none of us is perfect. I hope you are having a very good 2023. 🎶
@@solitarybee3714 thank you so much for your kind words! You really put a smile on face and made me feel the best I've felt in a really long time!!! I wish you all the best in life! I hope you and all your dreams come true! Take care my friend! 😊
@@NONE_SO_VILE 👍🙏
I used to sing this song in my local UK folk music club some 50yrs ago!
I love your reaction!!!!! There is no other way to react to it really. I know probably everyone knows of someone they feel that song was written about, I definitely do. Kris's writing is of the hook!!!! I love him!!! And again, loved your reaction to it!!!
Harri, you are very close when you say it must be grounded in a story. Kris tells us who before he starts singing. We know those guys by their work and reputation, not intimately like he did so he gives us a glimpse.
There's a reason Johnny Cash's favourite song was Kristofferson's Here Comes That Rainbow Again. Beautiful song with poetry for lyrics. A friend of mine cried watching him sing Why Me Lord, a powerful song. And we've all been in the position that he writes about in Sunday Morning Coming Down. Too many times probably.
Now, check out Sunday Morning Coming Down. My personal favorite performance is one done with Johnny Cash during a live performance with The Highwaymen.
Three minutes and Kris tells you the secrets of life and how to get through it. My favorite song ever. Truly great.
I still love Why Me Lord
The silver to gued devil is my favorite Kristofferson song.
Another good one he sings and wrote is "Silver Tongued Devil." He was married to Rita Coolidge and they did a few duets.
Kris wrote one of my all time favorite lyrics, “Freedom is just another word for nothin’ left to lose”! Of course Janis Joplin made the song (Me and Bobby McGee) famous. That would be a great one for your channel Harri. Great song, great reaction. 🌺✌️
Check out A Star Is Born starring Kris and Barbara Streisand
"From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the Hearst, the going up was worth the coming down." IMHO, one of the greatest lyrics ever written.
He’s a poet!
Worth listening to this also by Willie Nelson on his album "Willie Nelson Sings Kristofferson". This is my favorite composition by Kris.
I saw Kris at a small club in Greenwich Village a long time ago when he was just getting started and his low, growly voice simply dominated the room. Kris was a Rhodes Scholar and I believe he graduated from West Point. He was a helicopter pilot. When he first tried to break into the music business he landed a helicopter on Johnny Cash's lawn to get his attention. They later became good friends. I saw him a couple of years ago and he was an old man who needed help getting through his set. Age catches up to us all eventually.
On this same album, check out Jody the Kid and Good Christian Soldier.
Great reaction to this song. Kris along with Elvis are my musical idols. Kris is one of the top five songwriters to ever live. The Hillbilly Shakespeare.
This song always reminds me of my da.
We knew him as the silver tongue devil smooth!
Johnny Cash said that when Kris arrived on the Nashville scene all the other songwriters knew that they would to raise their game...a lot!
I had this album when I was a kid and learned almost every song.
Love his tunes ... his storytelling was great...
If all he gets is older and around-that’s a good line.
Yes, he is a great song writer. He was a helicopter flyer in Vietnam. He tried to meet Johnny Cash. So what did he do? He landed a helicopter at Johnny's house. Hahaha. He is one of the Highway Men
Cash, Kris, Willie and Waylon. Give them a listen Harri.
Kris never went to Vietnam, he volunteered but the Army wanted to send him to teach at West Point. He resigned his commission and went to Nashville.
Kris succeeds in getting you to connect with his songs through his great writing.
Thank you for spotlighting Chris. Another one (of many) is 'Why Me Lord'. Lyrics came to him like magic.
Kris Kristofferson is a great singer songwriter & actor. He wrote numerous songs for himself & others. Most famously "Me & Bobby McGee" which was a big hit for Janis Joplin. In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson & Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup the Highwaymen, known as part of the outlaw country movement. He starred with Barbra Streisand in "A Star Is Born" in 1976.
Try Kris Kristofferson's 'Best of all Possible Worlds' - funny but true.
He wrote so many great lyrics! Hi has a huge amount of fantastic lines. He wrote songs toe a lot of people.
Kris is not a typical songwriter, he is actually a poet.
A must is The Highwaymen doing Highwayman this consist of Kris, Cash, Waylon and Willie. Its so good.
Kristofferson is SO many things.
Not a good singer but a #1 song writer (he studied Shakespeare in England).
He was an officer in the military and stole a helicopter and landed it on Johnny Cash's property to give him songs head written. He quit the military to work as a janitor at Record Company to get to push his songs on Cash. He was told to leave Cash alone, but Cash let him "bother" him with the songs.
And...well...the rest is history.
And, yes...he is a very good actor.
Thank you! This man to me is the best!
An artist in a class all his own . Try “ Jody and the Kid” ✌️💕
Saw him live when I was young in Canada... 🇨🇦🤔
Just woke up.. Pretty much.
Great actor too!
THE Taker by Kris is a song you should consider ...
He is a prolific songwriter. Wrote Me and Bobby Mcghee which was aa huge hit for Janis Joplin. Try Sunday morning coming down.😅
Willie Nelson did a great cover of this track. In fact, he made a whole album called “Willie Sings Kristofferson.”
2 tracks from that album that Kris wrote that are good reaction material is “For the Good Times.” Ray Price famously covered that and “Why Me?” Which is one of the best gospel song I’ve ever heard.
One of the best songwriters ever. Those first two albums are the best ever. 'Blame it on the Stones' 'Darby's Castle' 'Casey's last Stand' Jody and the Kid' 'Beat the Devil' to name but a few. Great storyteller, lyricist.!!
Great song choice from Kris. You are definitely on a roll today!
Billy Dee
Jodi and the Kid
Loving Her Was Easier
When I Loved Her
Fabulous poetry
Sunday Morning Coming Down. Help me make it through the Night. Kris at his best. Johnny Cash does a great version of Sunday Morning Coming Down.
Bought this album in '72 and like the pilgrim, still searchin' for a shrine.
Greatest songwriter ever, and I’ll stand on Steve Earle’s coffee table in my boots and say so
he wrote so many hits for many singers. When they wanted to record him, he said I'm not a singer. But they talked him into it. And I'm glad they did.
Ya gotta try Sunday morning coming down - brilliant, something many of us can relate to at some point in our journey's.
He is the Hillbilly Shakespeare the best to ever put pen to paper.
I'm 70 now and loved and collected his music from the first time it was released. Hard to pick one favourite out of so many but my favourite would probably be
When I Loved Her
or else
For The Good Times.
Both seem very deep and moving to me.
Harri, if you like this, you will also love Townes Van Zandt ,"Pancho and Lefty" and "If I Needed You" .. also Kris's song "Sunday Morning, Coming Down" , ... you will love all those. btw, i enjoyed you reaction of Janis doing "Me and Bobby Mcgee".. Willie Nelson called it the perfect country song. everything a country song is supposed to have.
Lot of gems in the stuff that wasn't so mainstream. Kris has a massive body of work. All of it honest. All of it deep. He has never feared self examination.
And yes he wrote a lot of songs and he was involved with Janis Joplin. He wrote for Johnny Cash he went to an ivy League school couldn't tell you if it was Harvard or Stanford but you know his parents thought that was wasted because he wanted to be a songwriter. And he met Johnny Cash when he had wrote a song for him and got me really creative and getting it to him. LOL. They became best friends.
He went to Oxford.
Kris really is a lyrical genius. One of my favorite lines of his is the first line of his song 'Here Comes That Rainbow Again'. He wants to tell a story, and have his listeners see a movie in their mind. So he starts: 'The scene is a small roadside cafe, where the waitress is sweeping the floor, two truck drivers drinkin' their coffee and two Okie kids by the door'... And BOOM there you are act 1 scene one, and the movie is in your head...... Me and Bobbie McGee, Help Me Make It Through the Night, Sunday Morning Coming Down, For the Good Times, Riders In the Sky and on and on. And a Rhodes scholar to boot!
You have to check out Sunday morning coming down by Kris, it’s one of the best ever written in my opinion.
Although Kristofferson is an outstanding songwriter, he recorded a song by Billy Joe Shaver on this same album. The whole album was stellar, but I always loved that song. It is called Good Christian Soldier. Give it a spin. I think you’ll like it also.
There was no one better in the 70s.
a poet
Kris is a wordsmith. You can never go wrong with him. Try on To Beat the Devil.
Hi, play Walk a Mile in my Shoes, by Elis
Seen him 2 times live. A legend.
You could do a whole series with him and not get bored.
Shamefully overlooked by way to many. He can easily hold a candle to Cash. Same legendary level.
A marvelous writer singer and actor,
Harris, so glad you appreciated his lyrics. In college I sort o majored is Kris Kristofferson, trying to write verse in his style and a song or two. The concerts! trying to memorize a chorus not yet on record and led me to appreciate so many other artists. The looks of and appreciation he gives other artist looks the same way I feel toward music.
You absolutely must listen to "Casey's Last Ride". I never understood why this wasn't a big hit. One of my all-time favorite songs.
Harri, in a similar vein is "Cookie and Lila" by Dr Hook. I think you'd like it.
Definitely a top 10 lyrics song ever. One of my favorites over the last 50 years.
This song was in a 1971 movie called Cisco Pike where Kris was a paroled Drug Dealer and Gene Hackman was his crooked Parole Officer also starring Harry Dean Staton and Karen Black. WATCH IT.
I think you would really like "Beat the Devil" by him.
Your interpretation of this song was i believe spot on and Kris is not that easy to follow
Harri, you are the best. I have loved this song for a long, long time. I really enjoyed sharing it with you. Thanks.
Thank you Harri..Kris was brilliant in all his songs..This one for me is TOP NOTCH
This is as good a song as any to start your discovery of Kris's library of fine songs. Here are a few titles I know you will really dig; Sunday Morning Coming Down", "The Winner", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "For The Good Times", "Lovin' Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again). Looking forward to your reactions to this bad ass genius!
The man is the greatest poet of all time words are his playthings
check out the movie "cisco pike" starring kris kristofferson ,,featuring this song and 2 more of his songs
And and yes everybody knows he became an actor. That part self-evident with those kind of looks.
Loving her was Easier than anything I'll ever do again needs airtime. I challenge anyone to write or find more absolute beautiful words.
The Sliver Tongue Devil has always been one my favorites he has done
Love Kris. He is brilliant.
Try,
Sunday morning coming down
To beat the devil
Jody and the kid
Just the other side of nowhere
Why me Lord
Here comes that Rainbow again
Please do yourself (and me) a favor and react to many more of Kris Kristofferson songs. He is brilliant!
Brilliant man. Unbelievable lyrics.
Kris was a fighter pilot, married with kids and throws that away to be a singer songwriter and it was said that he would open the dictionary and put all the words into a proper order for the best music he could orchestrate.
I dont care what he says this song is all about Kriss . he is a genius with the English language . The greatest Bard since Shakespeare.
"Lost Inside of You" Kris & Barbra Streisand please. It's from "A Star is Born."
Jody and the Kid little known song of his.
He’s one of my favorites.
Kris is a favourite of mine - his songs have got me through some dark times because he could put into words things I could only feel. If you want to get a bit broader look at his stuff - try his albums "Jesus was a Capricorn" or "Who's to Bless and who's to Blame" - there are a lot of other stuff he has put out but those two albums are my favourites.
❤❤❤❤❤
I love his song ''A moment of Forever'' written for Willy and is the album title as well.
Thank you for your videos! I appreciate your reactions. Maybe you would like hear "here comes that rainbow again" performed by Kris Kristofferson - simple lyrics, great story telling ..
Loved Kristofferson
