- You're Not Going To Believe Who Hei Hei REALLY Was In Moana (Hint: His 'Stupidity' Gives It Away)!
Hei Hei was responsible for some of the biggest laughs throughout Moana, but for a while, it seemed like that was his only reason for being in the movie. However, after browsing through fan theories on Reddit, someone has brought up a good point and it looks like there might be more to Hei Hei than fans initially believed. In fact, if this theory ends up being true, Hei Hei might’ve been Moana’s biggest protector and the reason she was able to survive her journey to return the Heart!

I mean, Pua didn’t age either. Pua has literally been a piglet since the beginning of the movie!
I think the pig was the initial intended companion but they scrapped that plot
but if i remember correctly pua wasnt around when moana was a baby or a kid
There is a species of miniature pig, that looks like a piglet throughout its life.
Put didn't appear until Moana was already an adult at the beginning of the movie tho
Pigs live a lot longer than chickens, also like someone else said, there's miniature pig species.
There is a theory that the great stone dragon wasn't in the stone dragon when mushu went to wake him up as he was already with Mulan. The theroy states that Mulan at the beginning of the movie and Mulan going to war. When she was sitting beneath the stone dragon during the thunder storm you can see where she just gained iron will and determination. Which is all he did. He gave her the strength to go against the tide of what was predetermined to be right and wrong.
And in the scene where the ancestors were trying to decide which family guardian to send with Mulan, they highlighted very specific animals (that I could identify): monkey, dog, bull, rooster, goat, rabbit. And the shrine is implied to be hexagonal. with the guardians were shown sitting at and between the rafters, meaning there could easily be twelve of them. Including Mushu the dragon as a failed guardian, and you have the animals of the Chinese zodiac: (in order) Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each ancestor would recommend one animal over another because that was to one connected to their year of birth; that the head ancestor recommended the Great Stone Dragon over Mushu implies that (Disney's) Mulan was born in the Year of the Dragon!
(Another zodiac feature is the elements: wood, earth, water, fire, and metal. And the "Mu" of Mulan (木蘭 Mùlán) means "wood". The original ballad gives Mulan and older sister and a younger brother, with various dramatisations naming the sister Mulian or Munian. The Chinese calendar, alongside the zodiac animals, counts two years per element, for a cycle of 60 in total; if convention named the sisters after their birth-year elements, then Mulan might have been born in the Year of the Wood-Dragon, with her older (by one year) sister as a Wood-Rabbit. Calculating backwards, someone could find out the birth year of DISNEY's Mulan within Chinese history, within or before the Northern Wei dynasty (AD 386-535) in order to give a name to the emperor she served under.)
But the Dragon of the Chinese zodiac wasn't the only dragon of Chinese mythology. The "Four Symbols" are (according to Wikipedia) "four mythological creatures appearing among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions". One of which was the "Qinglong" (青龍 Qīnglóng), the (literally) "Green Dragon", representing the east and the season of spring. And the signature color of Mulan's military uniform is green!
I think Hei-Hei was both. He was a goofy companion with true strength within. Hei-Hei did play comic relief through most of the movie, but when only Moana and Hei-Hei went to return the heart near the end, that's when Hei-Hei showed his strength and courage by saving the heart when it almost fell off the boat and gave to back to Moana.
Same
The main reason Moana wiped out when she tried to cross the reef the first time was because she was in a tiny canoe rather than the boat she got later. But if Hei-Hei really is a spiritual animal guide, that would definitely explain a few things.
i think this theory is true, even the sea did try to save hei hei from drowning and even tried to seal him up so the rooster wont cause more trouble to moana's journey
There's an old Navy tradition I learned about where sailors get tattoos of a pig and a chicken on their feet. The reason is that often when a ship goes down, the last survivors are those animals that are in buoyant wooden crates, namely pigs and chickens. Sailors got the tattoos as good luck charms to prevent drowning. Not sure of Pua and Hei Hei are referencing that or not, but it'd be a pretty big coincidence if not.
Chickens will est small rocks they will get trapped in their gizzards and help digest the grain that they eat. So it wasn't weird Hei Hei tried to eat that stone, but that he tried with one so big.
Interesting but what if hei-hei has been pretending to be unintelligent all this time and doing just what was necessary to help guide her making him the smartest rooster in the world
That's what I was thinking. How else did he stow away on the boat? She put all of her supplies in the empty storage compartment at once, there would have to be a very small amount of time for Hei-Hei to get in undetected.
@@millytheotterlover1680 yeah exactly
Jar Jar Binks was a sith lord. He only pretended to be clumsy which is why he always survived and was chosen for such an important position. Unfortunately he was so unpopular they wrote him out of being revealed as a sith lord. But I think hei hei was just dumb but had a heart of gold.
I think Hei hei was placed there as a lucky charm, but also as a way for moana to learn how to take care of others. She was born to be a leader, so having Hei Hei to take care of would be a healthy thing for her.
I don't believe Hei Hei was the only animal to look over Moana her pig was with her since she was young also and hasn't aged either. When the movie ended and the pig greeted her when she came back it was still a piglet. The only difference between Hei Hei and the pig was that the pig stays on the island looking after her parents. I also believe even if when she tried to cross the ocean without Hei Hei and only Pua it was to teach her not to take the ocean for granted even though it help and choose her when she was younger because that is what she did when she was trying to cross before she took the big boat. she took it for granted just because it help her when she was younger so no I don't believe that is true that when she tried to cross with Pua that Pua wasn't her guardian it was that she wasn't thinking when she took the small boat instead of the big boat her ancestors left.
Ok but what if Hei-Hei was Moana's father's friend that died in the ocean?
Okay, but, and hear me out here, what if he wasn't?
There's also the fact that Hei-Hei recovers from countless injuries utterly unharmed. Not even ruffled. Does the bird feel pain? Can it be injured?
Such as when Moana literally has Hei-Hei's neck in her mouth, held via her teeth?
Makes me wander who her dad's companion was because he tried to leave with a friend but failed maybe he failed cuz he left his companion
Maybe his guide was pua? He never ages either
@@forestgrump4723 u know that makes sooo much sense
He failed because he wasn't the chosen one
Pua also didn't age throughout Moana's entire life. He's been a piglet since she was a baby, and if Pua was a real pig, he would have reached his adult size by the time he was between 2 and 3 years of age. Even if he's a mini pig, he'd at least look like an adult by the time he turned 3. Instead, Pua has the appearance of a piglet his entire life, and throughout Moana's entire life during the events of the movie. Some fans believe that it's because Pua is actually the son of Maui as he is in the original Polynesian mythology that the movie is based off of.
What if Pua is her god-appointed emotional support animal? From what I've been told by people who own or have owned pigs, they act a lot like dogs. Since her island doesn't seem to have any dogs, the next best thing is an animal that behaves similarly. Think about it. Her dad was overprotective and disapproved of her dreams, but it was essential for Moana to believe in herself in order to fulfill her destiny. The gods knew about her dad's boat accident and likely predicted how he'd behave as a father, and therefore knew Moana would need a companion she could bond with and talk to when there was nobody else around. Hei-Hei was there to protect her physically, and Pua was there to protect her mentally.
Hei-Hei is Chief Tui's best-friend reincarnated by the Gods.
First, what makes Hei-Hei special from a farming perspective:
When we first meet him, he's following a line of other young roosters who are all standard red/brown and though he is strange, Hei-Hei is vibrant. This often makes favoritism by the flocks owner, whom I believe Chief Tui himself. This would add to why the village doesn't eat Hei-Hei, as he's the Chief's favorite rooster and that is why his daughter sticks up for it. She doesn't get why her dad wants to keep it and he probably doesn't either, other then it's pretty.
Now, why do I think Hei-Hei is Dad's bestfriend?
Because the one time we see his friend- He is incredibly lanky.
We only get to see him for a handful of seconds, but compared to other Motunians, he is by no means as stout and bulky. He's long legged, has long arms, and has kind of a big head compared to the rest of his lithe form..... Who else is weirdly lanky? Hei-Hei.
If we also agree to the fan theory that Chief Tui and his best friend had tried to return the heart of Tafiti in their youths, personally adding a nice touch to it imo, since best friend BEGGED TO GO WITH HIM- to help or to witness.... and it is only when Moana is out at sea that she finds her little stow away.
He is still on the mission he and Tui started... However, he is a chicken. I think it's why he screams out when he realizes he's out at sea again, if he was out of his depth as a human, it's reasonable to panic scream. It might also be why he then took the storm LIKE A CHAMPION- 'cause he died in one already. What are the odds of the Gods having it happening twice? Hei-Hei also was 'smart' enough to eat the heart rather than let the Kakamora get it and I also loved when Moana had her revelation that she can do it on her own, Hei-Hei is sitting on the helm, ready to keep going too.
Hei-Hei is a 'play dumb' character and I think it's important to note that in the original story concepting, he was portrayed as a far more competent rooster, and indeed to be a guardian to Moana- by order of Chief Tui.
This makes sense if you think about it. Heyhey swallows rocks not only because he doesn’t need to eat but because he was more as a sort of protector of the heart for Moana so she could get it to ltafitti than an actual guide. He just wasn’t smart enough to tell what “rock” was the tafitti’s heart to keep it relatively safe for Moana
Way better than my theory.
Producer: I bet we can get Alan Tudick to make chicken noises.
Casting Director: You're on.
Does this explain Jar Jar, too?
I’m reminded of Dante from Coco.
It couldn't have been him since Moana came out the year before Coco
@@latashawilliams6681 Thank you.
According to the Polynesian myths that the writers probably referenced while creating the movie, Tala used to be in a relationship with Maui, likely making Tui his son and Moana his granddaughter. Also, Hei Hei and Pua were Moana's siblings.
I'd like to point out that roosters in Polynesian cultures symbolize protection and guidance, so it isn't far off.
Moana couldn’t cross the reef the first time because she didn’t have the heart yet but after she had it and her grandma passed her spirit helped Moana pass the reef to embark on her quest to return the heart
👋👋👋👋👋
2:20 "revealed in Broadway play" seriosly ? that was cannon like 2000+ years ago, from like you know GREEK MYTHOLOGY, girl apparently doesn't read.
and how can someone spend 8 minuts and still say NOTHING. like she is just re saying the same thing over and over just different wording.
Maybe Moana had multiple roosters over the years, all named Hei Hei.
Sounds like a good theory to me. Although the stone Hei-Hei is trying to eat is way too big, chickens actually do eat pebbles aka grit. They don't have teeth, so they swallow their food whole. Feeding them grit helps their gizzards to grind up the food they eat so they can digest it.
Birds eat rocks to help them diegiest
And how exactly did Hei Hei protect her? The pig was more useful & affectionate
The ocean could have let her catch upnto boat why did she need a boat. Wasn't the ocean it's her guardian
what if Hei Hei is actually her father's friend 😂
Hei Hei reminds me of the dog in Coco and he wasn’t very smart either, but was deemed worthy of becoming a spirit guide :3
Ive actually meet those who wrote the story and this theory according to the sources is going too left field so y’all will have to try again just like the famous words from grandma “Nope”
Belle had Philippe the horse.
😂😂😂😂😂 I love it when water saves Hei Hei multiple times 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️ Then locked him up below deck himself 3:27 drove me out of my seat laughing 😂 lol 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊 water needs to be a character in the live action I swear y’all better put him in there
Belle had scary cat horse Phaleep who made sure she got home and back to the castle safely.
Aurora had the owl, squrriels, and bunny's who obvious helped her out by getting Phillip over to her to meet her
Snow White had the deer, rabbits, turtle, squirrels to help her get to the house of the Dwarfs
So they all had companions that helped! Just because they didn't talk to where the audience could understand them don't count them out.
Number one mistake made in this video is, assuming it is the same chicken thru-out her aging. It is equally likely that they were all different chickens, that just all looked alike. Since we only know that the one she cares for when she is 16 is called Hei-Hei.
I belive the ocean was her guardian.
I'm turning this video into a drinking game. One shot for every utterance of "sent by the gods". WARNING: You're floored within 3 minutes.
There is not animation Disney Character from Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Laos? Mulan is based in Chinese origin.
I completely disagree with this theory. The only god that would send Hei Hei to follow Moana would be a god trying to get Moana killed. This again is people reading more into a character than is what is actually there. Hei Hei was comedy relief, and nothing more. Even when Hei Hei eats the stone and spits it up at the right moment, it is pure luck in the best case scenario.
Hei Hei is actually Forky.
Forky keeps trying to die as trash
Hei Hei keeps trying to die as dinner.
They both have a pronged top of their head, walk funny, and have googly eyes.
Clearly Hei Hei was that token object that you find at the beginning of an adventure and if you manage to hang on to it all the way till the end of the game you get an achievement. Clearly Moana's on her second play through and is achievement hunting.
Really though, Hei Hei was useful on a number of key moments. It was good to keep him around.
I am personally not a fan of the Hei Hei toy that lets out that unholy sounding squawk/screech. It just sounds incredibly wrong to me for some reason *shakes head*
But as a character, he does seem to serve a purpose beyond comedic relief
My theory: It's a movie and he didn't age because it's a movie. The pig didn't age. The parents didn't really age either. A lot of animals in the movies don't actually need to eat.
Anyone who read Greek myths would have known Triton was the son of Poseidon long before the Broadway show existed.
The gods: we're sorry about Hei-Hei, we purposely trained him wrong as a joke
Created by the animators, as a comic relief/ cute character. So I guess technically the creators, or gods of animation
Did you also notice that the chicken is also obsessed with rocks and what is the Sacred item.... a rock...
I think that he was her guardian too bc if he wasn't he would be died for shore if he wasn't!😂😂😂
There's a reason Belle didn't have an animal companion... The beast ....
i think hei-hei was her gaurdian..i also think the water sent him..i mean look at how when he fell into the water when both moana and maui were on the boat,,the water returned him to the boat put him in the basket put him below deck then shut the door to keep him inside plus when moana lost the heart hei-hei somehow knew to catch it but instead of trying to eat it he returned it to moana as if he knew what she needed to do,,so yes i do think hei-hei was moana's guardian and was sent to help guide her and protect her.
I always kind of thought it was brought along to teacher compassion
That theory is possible look at mushu from mulan he wasn’t the smartest but he had heart
And was the but of alot of gags
Mulan's ancestors never sent they don't even like him
chickens and many other omnivores often swallow rocks to aid in digestion.
I see where you're coming from, but who says it's the same chicken?
Didn’t Belle have the family horse as her animal friend?
Sounds like he is a test of Moana's capacity for caring.
What I got from this is that being a Disney Princess nets you at least one familiar.
Her parents could have just replaced heihei with new roosters over the years
Animal companions = familiars
Hei-Hei actually was Jar Jar binks
Hei Hei was Jar Jar Binks reincarnated.
Intelligence is everything it's what keeps you alive ❤️ and not hurt. Who the freak said Intelligence isn't everything.
Yes I think he was her guardian
I want more Disney Villian pasts theories does this make any sense 😂❤ because I want to know more about scar’s past*from the lion king)❤
And here I thought that him swallowing a rock was just to get it into his gizzard. Chickens are known to swallow small rocks that are then held in their gizzards to grind food down since they don't have teeth to do the grinding in the first place.
Hay hay goofy companion rather than godly being pua godly being.
I say why not both?
Both
I always thought there was more to hei hei.
Why did she have the pig too?
Pua is Moana animal guardian he's cuter he's stronger 💪 faster smarter and more experienced and durable than he he cause hay hay doesn't do anything and Pau doesn't age.
I think you are right about Pua, but wrong about Hei-Hei's status as a guardian. Pua doesn't age, which means he's very likely a guardian; but Hei-Hei doesn't age either and he's definitely more durable than Pua because how else would such a dumb creature survive for so long without very high durability. So Hei-Hei is one of her guardians.
Pua protects Moana in a different way. I think he's her god-appointed emotional support animal. From what I've been told by people who own or have owned pigs, they act a lot like dogs. Since her island doesn't seem to have any dogs, the next best thing is an animal that behaves similarly, which is a pig. Something smart enough to recognize her mental struggles and emotional needs. As you said, Pua is smart and cute, which is perfect for an emotional support animal.
Moana pretty much almost died, almost gave up, or both when she let her self-doubt get to her. If Pua wasn't there to be loving and supportive to Moana when she felt alone, she'd probably have self doubt through the roof and never fulfill the prophesy due to the lack of stubbornness and self-confidence that made her choose to go on that journey. Without Pua, Moana would've died after giving up on her dreams and instead becoming village chief, therefore being unable to stop the life-draining curse.
TL;DR: Hei-Hei was there to protect her physically, and Pua was there to protect her mentally. Both animals were her guardians and both animals were essential to her story.
mowee moana😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What’s the name of the soundtrack??✨✨
@Drawdat honey, it's the same name as the movie is Mona.
I like to think there was more to Hei Hei than just comic relief.
