  • Since we recently discussed CPAP and eye health in another video, we cannot NOT discuss eyelid laxity and sleep apnea. As outlined in the first few seconds of this video, sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts and CPAP machines are often prescribed to help. #floppyeyelidsyndrome #floppyeyelids

    What causes eyelid laxity?
Floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) is an under-diagnosed frequently bilateral eyelid malposition commonly involving the upper eyelids, presenting as recurrent or chronic ocular surface irritation and a chronic papillary conjunctivitis of upper palpebral conjunctiva from severe laxity. Decrease in the amount of elastin: Studies have shown significant decrease in the amount of elastin within the tarsal plate and eyelid skin. It is probably induced by repeated mechanical stress, associated with eye rubbing or by sleeping habits.
A significant correlation between obstructive sleep apnea severity and floppy eyelid syndrome was found after adjusting for age, sex, and BMI. The results suggested that “severe obstructive sleep apnea is an independent risk factor for the floppy eyelid syndrome”.

I have my 6 month lens replacement checkup in May.
    Both eyes had bad cataracts.
My left cornea is badly scarred from recurrent corneal erosion.
I also have basement membrane atrophy and dry eye syndrome.
Would it be rude to bring this up with my corneal specialist at my checkup?
