Hi Rusty, I well remember Bucky Burris and "chargin" Charlie Beckwith. Beckwith had retired when I got to Delta but Bucky was still there. November 85'. Did meet Col Beckwith later on though. I was there late 85 to early 92. Would have stayed longer but chopper crash while on mission severely injured me forcing retirement. Thanks for this episode !

There probably isn't a special forces regiment in the world that hasn't been influenced, assisted or directly trained by SAS operatives. Definitely, the last source of national pride in the United Kingdom. Proud of every soldier who has ever worn the beret in service to this country.

Thank you Mr. Firmins for you and the lads showing a yank the ropes to create what became the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta. A unit that does not nor ever has officially existed. The training imparted on these Delta boys not only saved many lives in the nineties including a certain young Ranger of only 18 but cost over 1000 Somali lives whilst keeping Task Force Ranger lives lost to 19. God bless every man in the SAS Regiments and thank you for being a beacon of light to lead the US Forces to develop one of the sharpest surgical instruments in the world. Who Dares Wins!

    • @TheLAGopher
      @TheLAGopher 2 роки тому +1

The Unit officially exists. Charles Beckwith officially named the Unit 1st SFOD-D and the Department of the Army authorized the Unit in November
1977. The US military just doesn't publically list or acknowledge the Unit in its table of organization within USASOC or JSOC.
However, the Pentagon has officially disclosed the existence of "Special Missions Units" within the Joint Special Operations Command, and the Unit has allowed Unit Operators using Headquarters USASOC to compete and win the Best Ranger competition, including a soldier who would recently be awarded the Medal of Honor for a Delta raid in Syria.
If the Unit never offically existed, the Army would have taken more steps to cover up its existence such as listing their operations as
US Special Forces or US Special Operations Forces missions. Instead, many are listed as Special Mission Unit,JSOC, or Headquarters
      USASOC missions.

I read Charlie Beckwith’s book Delta Force probably 20+ years ago so know the conception of the creation of Delta Force the genesis of which was that Beckwith had been in exchange with the SAS in the early 60’s and had even commanded a troop and deployed to Malaya. A Captain in US Special Forces at the time, he returned to his Unit and campaigned for years for the creation of a similar Unit as the SAS, and would then, years later oversee its creation.
His book is a good read, including an incredible account of surviving being hit by a 50 cal round in Vietnam, when by rights he should have died.
My first comment on your channel Rusty, it would be remiss of me to not acknowledge your place in history and the remarkable career you had. In short, I was born into the Army, my dad served 39 years, I went on to serve 11 years myself, and that from a young age I read books and accounts such as Legionnaire, and Soldier I, the latter of course which includes yourself, Pete Winner and others’ incredible action in bringing to an end the siege of the Iranian Embassy. I doff my cap with much respect.

Great video! Always good content and both the SAS and Delta Force are elite warriors. The one thing that I am certain is that the SAS is the father of Delta. I believe that the Special Air Service was started by David Sterling during WWII as long range scouts. Delta learned from SAS selection as especially counter terrorist operations per COL (retired) Charles Beckwith's book, "Delta Force".

Have a look at pics of Beckwith in uniform. On his right chest area (left as you look at it) you will see 22 SAS wings. These are usually worn on the right shoulder, but I suppose US Army uniform protocol places them there.
For you; as you are reading the book, I know Beckwith did an exchange program with 22 in 1962, what I'm not clear on is; did he actually attend and pass 22 SAS selection in full? What does the book say? To be wearing those wings, I damn well hope so, rather than given them just by being on exchange.

Rusty mate I'm going to say it. Most of your audience wants to know the history of the SBS and why they fell short of the SAS? Duncan Falconer explained it on the Chris Thrall podcast. He said something like the Oil companies that owned the rigs asked the SBS guys training on them how much they earned and then gave them a better offer thus reducing their capacity. Forcing the Navy to recruit fresh Marine recruits with no experience into special forces and relying on the SAS to bring the Navy boys up to speed.

Hello Rusty, I have a question.
Pics of Beckwith in uniform show on his right chest area (left as you look at it) SAS wings. These are usually worn on the right shoulder (as you well know), but I suppose US Army uniform protocol places them there.
    Question
I know Beckwith did an exchange program with 22 in 1962, what I'm not clear on is; did he actually attend and pass 22 SAS selection in full? To be wearing those wings, I damn well hope so, rather than given them just by being on exchange.

Time in the market beats market timing. An investment saying that is equally applicable to military training and experience. Was always something cooking with the Empire or was relevant to the Empire from 1945-1997 (HK transfer). The necessary conditions existed to make a legend. Once the conditions existed that exposed the US to constant threats (ie Mideast interventions and cowboy diplomacy) then Delta had constant Time In market experience.

Full respect for what you did for our country Mr Firmin. I have the most respect for you Sir. Soldiers lives DO MATTER, I think your spot on with that, Its a shame our country is in the state it is right now, with the virus + the co-current "situation". I do have a question for you, I hope you will answer it as best you can and my intention is Not to put you on the spot. Just from watching your videos and thinking much on the Iranian embassy siege, I am sure it was the same for you in many situations, but, my question is... what was the going through your mind on the second you was about to go through the first barrier into the hostile space.... when I say hostile space I mean crossing that first window or wall or door, my fk...ing a..hole would have been flapping a small bit, but then I guess after all that training.... surely still your heart must have been pumping out of your chest? GO RUSTY!! Happy Father’s Day

question on becoming a public ex SAS. I read somewhere that if one becomes public as an ex SAS member, the Regiment would treat the individual as an outcast. Wouldn't be invited to Regimental functions etc. Is there any truth to that? Can one be "approved" to become public? Can you say anything about this?

So in the states you had SFOD-A teams or green berets. The unit before delta was called (BLUE LIGHT) 1970-1975ish. So those of you that know the Green Beret CIF or CRF which is there own hostage rescue team that still functions. Blue light was basically a green beret hostage rescue team. Well they stood down blue light after 1977-1978 or so. But the whole reason for it being 1970s is obviously it’s a hostage rescue team primarily terrorist hostage takers. And terrorism was created as the result of us overthrowing and arm twisting they started fighting back in unconventional ways. So we had to respond by standing up these HRTs. It’s sorta we the USA are our own worst enemy when it comes to creating problems for ourselves. Even today we still stick our hands where we know it will piss off half the world but I don’t think we will ever learn.

SAS and Delta are quiet. Even though you give facts you can't tell all. It seems the US SEALs are the worst about talking too much. My Brother in Law who was Army US-SF Medic Molina did not like them much because they liked to boast too much. Don't know if you crossed with his Generation of D. I'm Ex Navy and was a Radar Operator/Navigator so wasn't even close to the Operators. Bugs me when everyone over here asks if I was a SEAL just because I was in the Navy. Good origin explanation of Delta.
