- Nothing will have a bigger impact on your Medicare costs, coverage, and plan decisions than where you intend to live. Every state has its own rules and costs, which makes it impossible for us to cover every state in a single video.
Which is why we are planning a 48-state road trip to cover each state (we'll get to you Alaska and Hawaii).
Follow the sights and sounds of the roadtrip here:

Brilliant! I live just outside Chicago in Indiana. Head to the beach and walk around the dunes.
Sounds awesome! Thank you for the recommendation!
Yes, the dunes are great for kids and Lake Michigan is special.
thank you
Appreciate you!
Thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
When you visit Indiana with your family, you have so many options. We have a great state park system to preserve a beautiful variety of natural landscapes, with outdoor adventures. (yes, there is much more than 'corn' in Indiana, haha). Top parks for kids: Indiana Dunes and the South Shore (on Lake Michigan), Turkey Run, Spring Mill, Clifty Falls, and 23 other state parks. Most all have campgrounds; some also have cabins and inns with restaurants. Also:: Bluespring Caverns and Marengo Cave were faves of my children. Indiana's caves may not be as big as Kentucky's caverns, but they are just as nice and well preserved. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis and Bellaboo's Play and Discovery Center are excellent. You also have the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. If you like theme parks, a Must Visit spot is "Holiday World and Splashin Safari' in Santa Claus, Indiana. Much better than anything Disney does! It's way more fun and excitement, more relaxing for the parents, shorter lines. And costs less. ;)
This is great, thank you so much!
I took where I will retire into consideration.
I left Florida and moved to Texas for this reason.
As a Medicare agent, THANK YOU. This is the #1 thing folks need to consider when choosing a Medicare plan. It all depends in where the person lives.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
We will move to another state after both are retired (after I’ve been on Medicare for several years) - so I guess the rate could change the year after we move?
@austinburns4213 it can, yes. Supplement plans are portable. Depending on the company you are with, you can keep it if the rate is better than the state you move to. Some companies, if they find out you've moved will adjust the rate. If you move to a state with lower rates, probably good to make the switch.
When you are in Utah, anywhere in the southern Utah Red Rocks area is just breathtaking!
Agreed!
I'm a Utah native :)
We are spoiled with the different scenery we have, aren't we?
@@Theretirementnerds We really are, as we have such a vast variety!
Must see Goblin Valley State Park. Stay in a cabin at Dukes in Hanksville, UT. The area is a dark skies conservatory too. See my review on google. Expect 3 to 4 hours.
Live in AZ. I am just as fortunate! The entire state is beautiful!❤
New York-Niagara Falls has big impact but in the Eastern portion of the State, the Walkway over the Hudson is beautiful on a clear day. If you are outdoorsy, the peaks of the Adirondack mountains may be more your style. Any baseball fans in the group? Cooperstown has the Baseball Hall of Fame and the town is small enough to poke around in.
Thank you so much!
We do have a little baseball player 🙂
Georgia- Come see Savannah! We have a beautiful historic districts filled with gorgeous squares. River Street is filled with restaurants, shops, and you can watch the huge container ships pass. You can take a dolphin tour and visit historic houses and forts. If you're really lucky, you can catch a game with the Savannah Bananas. Even if you're not a baseball fan, I promise your family will have a great time.
Savannah is on the itinerary! 😊
My son plays baseball, but the bananas don't have a game the day we'll be there and if they did, everything is sold out!
Thank you for the Medicare plans, information
In CT, most will recommend the coast and places like Mystic. I recomend West Hartford, especially Elizabeth Park, the largrgest municipal Rose Gardem! Visit in June/July for the best show of the roses, but there is plenty to see in other months of the year. ❤😊
Thank you so much!!
In Missouri, check out Forest Park in St Louis. Larger than New York's Central Park, at absolutely no cost for admission you can visit their wonderful zoo, beautiful art museum, Jefferson Memorial, and even sit in free seats for an evening musical theater performance at The Muny, the largest outdoor theater in the United States.
So cool! Thank you!!
And Table Rock Lake
Michigan State:
Henry Ford Museum
Greenfield Village
Mackinac Island
Tahquamenon Falls
Pictured Rocks
Thank you so much!!
@@Theretirementnerds make sure you try the middle eastern food when you visit MI it’s pretty good, and healthful. For not so healthy foods(fast food), you can try Detroit style deep dish pizza from Jets or Hungry Howies with ranch sauce, and Great Greek(Arthenian burger & fries).
Oh yes-Sunset Crater lava flows and ice cave. It looks like Mars-not the planet earth. Outside Flagstaff. See some ancient ruins too-Wupatki National Monument-easy hike. Walnut Canyon-multiple ruins, Sunset Crater and Wupatki are only miles from each other. Heading east Monument Valley, Peteified Forst and Painted Desert all worthwhile.
Sounds amazing! I wish we had more time in Arizona!
North Carolina: Asheville Smokey Mountains and Biltmore Estate
Thank you!!
WV. Visit Summersville Lake and rent a pontoon for the day. About 30 min away, visit the New River Gorge Park and Bridge. Eat at Pies and Pints pizza in Fayetteville (or downtown Charleston if you’re in that area).
Thank you so much for the recommendations!!
In Ohio, go to Cedar Point on the Lake Erie shore. It is the best roller coaster park in the country.
My wife will be all over that! She LOVES roller coasters.
MI... if you don’t do dunes in Indiana, swing around the corner and hit up the Warren Dunes in Michigan.
Alternatively, on the east side take the kids to Greenfield Village.
Thank you!
Pennsylvania…of course there’s the liberty bell, etc in Philly but in Scranton, home of Dundee Mifflin, you can visit Steamtown National Park and visit an old coal mine shaft deep in the earth at McDade Park. Then you're not far from the Pocono Mountains and on your way to NYC. What I would like to know is your thoughts on Advantage Care in Northeastern PA. Enjoy your trip!
Thank you so much for the recommendations!! Excited for Pennsylania!
Frankenmuth Michian - The flavor of Bravaria. It is an affluent town that is like visting October Fest every day, here in the USA. Also, it is near the Tri-Cities of Michigan - Saginaw, Bay City and Midland. 3 different cities each with their own identity. Frankenmuth is just to the southeast of Saginaw. Bay City sits at the mouth of Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Midland is all about Dow Chemical. Saginaw has the Dow Chemical spinoff of Hemlock Semiconductor as well as the the former Lumber Capital of the world (about 150 years ago) and was a powerhouse of the auto industry manufacturing. Today Saginaw is the largest of the Tri-Cities and has diversified it's industries somewhat. But is still loaded with retirees from the Big 3 Auto.
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Washington State Columbia River Gorge, Palouse Falls

I could have sworn that I wrote something a few days ago, but I don't see it in the list. So please excuse this if I have already told you all of this. I currently live in Buffalo, NY, and it is one of the nicest places I've lived in the summertime! The temps are usually perfect and everything is so green and bloomy. You don't want to miss Niagara Falls! I never get tired of seeing it. Going on the Maid of the Mist boat trip is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! When you look up at the falls from below gives you such a different perspective. The falls fill me with awe every time we go. If you can, bring passports so that you can go over into Canada to view the falls from that side. Really spectacular!
Buffalo has great restaurants and there are a few festivals almost every weekend. Winters can be harsh here, so they make up for it by having lots to do in the summertime. The Anchor Bar is the place where Buffalo chicken wings were invented. They still serve them today. So that would be a fun place to go. There are tons of great Italian restaurants and other ethnicities too. Buffalo is a real melting pot of nationalities (just like my home of Pittsburgh, PA is). I love the pizza here too! "Franco's" or "Just Pizza" are probably my favorites. There are some. great Polish places too where the pierogis are so good!
I saw that someone else had mentioned Letchworth State Park, and I second that. It is beautiful there! If you travel north to Buffalo from Pennsylvania, you won't want to miss taking the kids to the Pymatuning Spillway. It is a place that truly delights kids as they toss bread to "feed the fish". It is surely a sight to behold. I've never seen anything like it. Here is a link so that you can check it out: visitcrawford.org/listing/pymatuning-spillway/
This is all so awesome!
We actually won't spend much time in NYC. Most will be upstate, including Niagara! 🙂
Awesome idea! Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas...free admission. Founded by the daughter of Sam Walton (Walmart).
Thank you! We'll need to check that out!
In Texas; two places: San Antonio (downtown, the River Walk) and the Hill Country west of Austin, NW of San Antonio
Been a Spurs fan most of my life 🙂 love the Riverwalk. Was there for the 1999 finals against the Knicks.
Live in Georgia but retiring in Indiana. Traffic is terrible in the Atlanta area. Savannah (lower part) and Blue Ridge (northern part) are beautiful cities to visit. Excited about this!
Can't wait for Georgia! Savannah is on the list!
Ride some ferries in Western Washington. Don’t forget East of the mountains.
Thank you so much!!
Oregon:
1. The water falls are a must see.
- The Columbia River George has many waterfalls a few feet from the trail head to a few miles.
- Silver Falls State Park or The Trial of Ten Falls.
2. The plants/flowers are unique and breathtaking.
3. Hiking offer spectacular scenery and unheard of views.
Thank you so much Paul!
All Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 🇺🇸🌎
Definitely need to find a way there!
Thanks, The Retirement Nerds!
Thank you David!
@@Theretirementnerds My pleasure, Erik; I hope all goes well for you.
St. Louis, Missouri Don’t miss the Gateway Arch and Forest Park!
Thank you!!
When in Nebraska be sure to have a Runza.
Had to google what a Runza was :)
Looks delicious! Thank you!
Tennessee: Gatlinburg is the must see. Cute little tourist town right outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Super walkable if you stay in town. A little bit of everything for the whole family set against the backdrop of the beautiful mountains. Mini golf Hillbilly Golf and get to ride the tram up the side of the mountain. Eat at New Orleans Sandwich Company for delicious food with a fun hole in the wall vibe. Venture off the beaten path with Smoky Mountain Llama Treks to connect with nature with such gentle and peaceful creatures.
Thank you so much for these recommendations! Hopefully we can make it there!
Minnesota: The "Spoonbridge and Cherry" art piece in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is probably the most iconic man-made thing in Minnesota while walking across the Mississippi river at the headwaters in Itasca state park is probably the most iconic natural-made thing in Minnesota.
So cool. Thank you for the recommendation!
Monterey, CA. Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Pebble Beach, Big Sur coast. Enough said!
Thank you so much!!
Thanks!
Kentucky: Mammoth Caves
Thank you so much!!
You have an open invitation to come visit when you are in Ohio!😀
What part of Ohio are you in?

@@Theretirementnerds Northeast, Ohio, near Youngstown.👍
Huntsville in Northern Alabama has Space Camp (if you want to leave a child behind for a few days) and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, which is a hands-on science museum appropriate for "kids of all ages".
My kids (and I) would LOVE this!
Gosh 2 things struck me right away in this video. The first was I have after watching many videos actually thought about "Why someone doesn't do a breakdown of every state" But then I thought about how much work it would be. The second thing was I have not done it, but when I found out what a bucket list was one of the things I thought everyone should do if they can is go to every state. I just thought it would be awesome to say you did it. My wife has 12 magnets of states she has been to on our fridge. Never ever thought of putting the 2 together. What a brilliant and challenging idea. National Lampoon's Vacation keeps popping in my head as you are driving on the Interstate and Christie Brinkley pulls up on the side of you. But that's a whole another story lol. I already subscribed to the other channel. I would think a lot of people would want to follow the journey.
Thought you'd enjoy this announcement 🙂 should be an exciting adventure and hopefully helpful for the Medicsre folks!
California - I live in Northern California and am a subscriber. The best places to visit (for a family), would be things like Old Sacramento (Wild West version of Sacramento), maybe the Heart Castle or the Winchester mansion. San Francisco is picturesque, but it is not what it once was as a beautiful city. You would also enjoy wine country and the coast line north of San Francisco. Central coast is pretty also but this is a VERY long state from North to South.
Safe and fun travels.
Thank you so much! The plan in California is the Redwoods, San Francisco, and end up in Disneyland with who knows what we'll hit along the way :)
Thank you so much for sharing!
Looking forward to your trip video@@
Thank you so much! Hopefully it'll be fun to follow along 😊
For Vermont Shelburne Museum Ben and Jerry's plant in Waterbury, downtown Burlington cruise on Lake Champlain.
Thank you so much!
Williamsburg, VA! :)
Thank you!!
While in CT, you must see Mystic Seaport. It's historic. Fun, educational, and pretty. Oh, also wonderful fresh seafood.
Sounds like a great time! Thank you for sharing!
That's a very interesting point about the plans vary by state.
I look forward to watching your road trip videos and learning about the Medicare differences by state. Thanks! I will go to the new channel and subscribe... right now!
Thank you so much!!
Texas is like 4 states in one. I live in the center just SW of Austin. We have 6th St and music downtown, or South Congress Ave where you'll find the Keep Austin Weird vibe. Come west to Dripping Springs in the Texas Hill Country to visit the famous Hamilton Pool (Look it up) or south from here to the Natural Bridge Caverns just north of San Antonio for mind-blowing caves. Go south to the gulf coast for some fabulous sea food ala Galveston Island. Stay east in the Piney Woods for the trees. West Texas is Friday Night Lights and the artsy desert town of Marfa. There's more!
Thank you so much for the tips!
I’m from Oregon. Best places to visit, in my opinion, would be multnomah falls, the Oregon coast from north to south and rafting the rogue river or visiting crater lake. The cascade mountains are gorgeous too. It’s a beautiful state. Moved here from Texas nearly 50 years ago
Thank you! We have family in Bend, which is where we'll be sleeping in Oregon. We'll see where else we're able to visit 🙂
Arizona is quite hot in summer so I would suggest Sedona as it will be about 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix and has beautiful areas for hiking in watery areas.
Picking the summer definitely brings a whole lot of heat into the equation! Thank you!
In Washington , Mt Rainier is incredible but you’ll need to plan ahead since a pass is required to get access to the park (starting this summer). There’s a million cool things to do in Seattle depending on your interests; the Boeing factory tour is unique if you’re at all interested in airplanes.
Thank you so much! Mt. Rainier is on the itinerary :)
Charleston is the best city to visit in South Carolina
In Wisconsin, you can visit Wisconsin Dells if you want a stereotypical tourist experience--huge water parks, ride the WW2 ducks on a river tour. In Milwaukee, there are cultural festivals at the lakefront almost every weekend--the largest is Summerfest, 10 days in July featuring many kinds of music. Looking forward to your video on WI since we are one of the states that has very different kinds of policies.
Thank you! You most definitely are a unique Medicare state 😊
In Michigan, Mackinaw Island in the northern lower peninsula. Take a ferry to the island and enjoy its charm! It’s also car-free. Safe travels!!!
Thank you so much!!
New Hampshire: take the boat out to the Isles of Shoals. Only a few miles off shore. So peaceful. Portsmouth is a nice Colonial town. Great food. Strawberry Banke is there, too. The Underbelly Tour of Portsmouth is hilarious.
Sounds so fun! Thank you!!
New Mexico. Santa Fe Loretta Chapel. Staircase is made from with no nails, one piece, spiral, last century.
Thank you so much!!
Wow that is awesome and open up for many videos on your topics with more fun stuff. For California, SeaWorld in San Diego, Disneyland in Anaheim, Mammoth and Sequoia National Park. Have a nice n safe trip.
Thank you so much! I know the kids are excited for Disneyland 🙂
Thats easy! Omaha Nebraska! We have the #1 ZOO in the country voted #1 for the 2nd year in a row. A must see! Or if Baseball is what you prefer, it's home of the College World Series. These are just two.
This is great! We will be stopping in Omaha! My son plays baseball, and all the kids love animals so that'll be great!
The Omaha Zoo is better than the San Diego Zoo. I love it!
North Carolina! Visit the Blue Ridge Mountains and Asheville. Unless you're a beach guy, then maybe Wilmington.
I read a book that took place near Asheville and I've always wanted to visit. I think we're going to try and get to Asheville :)
Mississippi--Oxford
Thank you!!
watching a ball game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh is a blast when you're in Pennsylvania. Historic Philadelphia is also quite impressive with Independence Hall and the Constitution Center
Can't wait for Philadelphia. Only have 1 day there. Will need to come back for much longer
@@TheretirementnerdsI first visited Philadelphia when I was 24 in the 1970s. I only allowed one full day. I vowed to return, although it took me 3 years to do so. Eventually I ended up moving there, I liked it so much.
Hi Erik,
Not the ideal time of year to visit us in Florida due to the heat, humidity & hurricanes! Come October-April when you can enjoy the beaches, boating, fishing and manatees!
As you are aware we are kind of an outlier State when it comes to plan costs. $$$ I look forward to you and your family's journey and videos, be safe.
Thanks for all you do!
It'll be hot the entire trip! Haha. Hopefully we avoid a hurricane 🌀 the kids are looking forward to Harry Potter world 🙂
California--Yosemite Valley (Make reservations Early)
Thank you!!
West Virginia - Historic Harpers Ferry and scenic New River Gorge National Park.
Thank you so much!!
And Summersville Lake in between
In North Carolina visit Wilmington, great beaches and people.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Oregon: in my opinion the most awesome site in Oregon is Crater Lake, Oregon's only national park. The only downside is that it is on top of a mountain, so summertime is basically the only time you can see it, and it's a bit out of the way from everything else.
Thank you so much! We'll see if we can work that in!
If you happen to speak to anyone on your trip about this topic, please let them know how who they vote for could have drastic implications for their coverage.
Biden has already screwed up Advantage plans.
Wow, this is so obvious, yet it's never occurred to me - despite me planning to retire in a lower COL state.
Currently I live in New Mexico, which is a spectacular place to visit. In Albuquerque ride the tram (kinda expensive), visit Old Town (just be careful where you stay so your car isn't stolen). Santa Fe - obviously the plaza but also Museum Hill / botanic gardens. On some days, they have Native American dancers. Lots of festivals during summer. Ride the train out into the desert. Sky City - very, very cool. Taos Pueblo. The whole state is heavily BLM land, so it's hard to narrow down as far as natural wonders - massive lava flows, ice caves, calderas, La Ventana arch, White Sands.
Thank you so much for all the ideas! This is great!
Yeah, in New York you're better off with HDG or an advantage plan (That's something you don't hear me say often)
Texas….Houston: NASA, Downtown Museum District, The Woodlands area. Austin: Hill country, downtown
Thank you! Texas is so big!
In Michigan the lakeshore of Lake Michigan in the northern lower peninsula
Thank you!!
In Texas go to San Antonio and visit the Alamo and the riverwalk.
Love San Antonio! Went there for a basketball tournament. Ended up seeing the Spurs vs Knicks in the Finals in 99, which made me a lifelong Spurs fan 🙂
California: Yosemite and Lake Tahoe
Thank you!!
Absolutely true. If you folks make it to northern VA dinner is on me.
I think we'll be staying in Roanoke and then headed north up through DC, Maryland, Delaware, etc.
Are you between Roanoke and DC?
@@Theretirementnerds Arlington
@@TheretirementnerdsIf you're really going to DC, you should have said something like "Lower 48 and DC". So many people make this mistake. How many times do you hear things like, "All 50 states." So are you or aren't you going to DC - 49 political subdivisions or 48?
@rslitman great clarification. I'm not really sure yet. I know we are driving through DC, but not sure if we will stop in DC. As we get closer, I will know more there.

Probably better to communicate that way rather than putting travel dates and addresses all over youtube 🙂
Minnesota: Itasca State Park, headwaters of the Mississippi River.
Thank you so much!!
In western NY, you could visit Lucille Ball's grave, Her childhood home (outside only), the Lucy-Desi museum and the National Comedy Center. Niagara Falls, the locks at the Erie Canal (near the falls). take a hike in Letchworth state park or Watkins Glen (Watkins Glen is better). The State Museum in Albany is really cool. They have a 911 Exhibit, or you could go down to the city and see the real 911 site. There is soo much to see in NY. A whistle tour won't do it justice. Don't live here though. The costs are atrocious.
Thank you so much!! So much to see for sure!
SW Ohio, see serpent mound (fort ancient) near Lebanon ohio, USAF museum (Dayton Ohio)
Sweet! Thank you!!
We moved from Arizona to Florida for health reasons and are planning to live our retirement years in FL. We welcome your feedbacks. Thank you for the “road” show.
Sounds like a fun move! We'll definitely keep you posted! :)
Thanks for making that video coming up. In Georgia stick to the North Georgia Mountain areas, Cumberland Island where JFK Jr married, and Savannah. That's about it because the traffic in Atlanta is just as bad as Los Angeles freeway traffic.
Thank you! I do believe Savannah is on the itinerary 🙂

Definitely a factor in certain areas and companies!
I would love to personally meet you if you decide to come to Las Vegas.
