For a long time in the comics Spidey was pretty built. Late 60-70’s was this mostly. 80’s made him thinner I think.
You're right Sean, I think looking back Spidey was broader in the 70's / 80's.
I recently caved and bought the Raft Spider-Man. I love the deep blue on it, similar to your #1 choice here, and the McFarlane-like head sculpt is fantastic and very distinctive from any of the other Pizza Spidey heads.
This is my third time watching this. One of your best and most personal videos, David.
Aw thanks man. That Raft Spider-Man still eludes me!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour were you able to get your hands on one? They are all over eBay and Mercari now.
not sure if anyone has commented this yet, but the black suit was actually a fan submission back in 1982! Originally, the artist Randy Schueller designed the suit to have red instead of white, which I believe they brought back in a story a few years back. Anywho, great video man, just discovered your channel and loving it!
Ah yes great point. I remember reading the recent story where they adapted the original. Great fun.
I like using rerto spidey as a 30 year old peter. Like the one in Spiderverse. Using pizza Spidey as 20s peter and ultimate as teen peter
That's my logic for displaying them too. The unmasked head looks great on the retro figure.
Personally, I still think Pizza Spidey makes for a great Bagley Spidey while Retro Spidey really seems like a good 70's/80's Spidey rendition. He's had so many unique artists in the last 15 years or so, I don't know what I would consider the modern go-to look for him these days.
Yeah it's kinda funny that chronologically it's the larger Spidey that actually works better as representing the younger Peter Parker.
Who designed the Black Suit ? Believe it or not, it originated from a fan mail in 1982, some then 22-year-old fan named Randy Schueller mailed a drawing to Jim Shooter and he bought the idea for 220 Dollars. The original design was black and red instead of white, but when Secret Wars came around in 1984, they tweaked it to make it black and white. And the rest is history
Yes I remember reading about that recently. Marvel actually made the story that he pitched the new costume with. It was good fun!
I like the new intro but I can't help but it feels like it goes on for too long
Thanks AA. I get that. I just bust it out every now and then. Thanks for watching!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour love your videos man!
The ANAD two-pack with MJ was a Toys R Us exclusive, came out around the time vulture capitalism was destroying the company.
Ah yes that makes sense!
And as a result many of us collectors missed out on it. :(
I agree that Pizza Spidey is better for his younger look, but the new retro card Spider-Man is absolute money for an adult Peter Parker. I reallyyyy cannot wait for them to do the Symbiote suit on that buck.
Oh yeah that should look fantastic!
Nice! I actually have the #1 Spidey (my only Spidey besides the Select) on ur list! I love the Carnage head and the fact it came with EVERY style of hands. Excellent vid!
Ah yes of course Pat I didn't even think to mention that he has all those extra hands on top of everything else!
This was a clone tastic episode. The two of you bouncing back n forth made it seem like a 90,s sitcom comic.
I gotta say I kinda like the end result of this one man, two man show although the editing certainly takes a lot longer!
90s Spider-Man 2099 and 90s Scarlet Spider are my favorite
Great choices!
Hate to break it to you, but Superior Spidey wasn't the Pizza buck, either, he has a shorter torso and different cuts for the butterfly, and is, as far as anyone has seen, a unique sculpt that only THAT Spidey uses, which is unfortunate because he actually had proportionately correct abs and torso length compared to the rest of the body, which is why customizers love him so much, despite missing the arms and whatnot.
I stand corrected. Thanks!
Really nice collection, definitley my favorite its the Pizza Spidey, but the black suit and the All new all diferent are amazing too
Yeah those are great choices!
These spiderman figures say pizza, but the hands on the first one say hospital haha
Lol I can't believe I didn't notice that!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour haha yea something just felt off and it took me a bit to find out.
A fan sent the symbiote design to Marvel. The latter paid the former for $200.
Ah yes that's right, I remember reading the story they made out of that original concept recently.
I had this idea essentially my Idea was witch spidey is best based of pizza spidey I love that series by the way
Yeah this is an idea I've been holding off on for a while now.
Pizza Spider-man is more of a McFarlane or Ditko version while Retro Spidey is the '80's cartoon or modern comics Spider-man.
That's makes sense, I always thought the 90's cartoon Spider-Man was quite bulky
Also, how does Spider-Man stick to walls if he wears shoes ( or gloves ? ), well, Spiders don't actually stick to walls, they actually have microscopic appendages that act like some sort of universal magnet that they can toggle on and off. It's called the Van der Waals force effect. If Spider-Man functions like a spider, he should stick to any surfaces like a magnet, and as you know, magnet are attracted to metal even if there's something in the way if they're strong enough
In classic Marvel tradition that explanation wins a bonafide 'No prize!'
I disagree on the symbiote Spider-Man, I know it was only there for one issue but I loved that costume and I think it was necessary to go with red goblin
Hey I'm very happy that someone out there has love for him!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour He looks great with the alternate head from Back in Black Deadpool too.
I actually like a lot the superior spidey, It’s mostly nostalgia because it’s one of the figures I got in my childhood and actually got me into collecting recently but a good figure in general. Great video as always :)
We should get a classic daredevil on the retro Spider-Man mold, I have been binging the show and I think it is crazy that the only normal daredevils that we have gotten have been on the trashy Bucky cap mold
I would love that Daredevil. Classic red DD is a major missing piece in my collection!
Yeah i hated the black and red one from the retro wave, it was such an obscure version for him to add to wave of figures that was being advertised as retro classic looks for the characters
I would love for them to redo the ANAD Daredevil (black and red) on that body
The problem that I have with pizza Spidey is the way the thighs integrates with the pelvis .
Yeah I have to admit that I should have mentioned that as those hip joints are really ugly!
That house of m is the realest example of
*B I G B R U H M O M E N T*
Lol the ultimate Bruh moment!
The Ben Reilly Carnage is indeed awesome but to me the 'ideal' Spiderman on that body mold would be the one from The Raft 2 pack. Too bad it's too expensive I'll end up buying a Scarlet Spider knock off and use the head to make my own version.
Yes! I'm missing that raft Spidey
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour Dave, buy the entire box set and sell off the other figures. You'll end up with Spidey free or nearly so.
i cant be the only person who realizes this but the superior spider man hands are on the wrong way
Lol you weren't! :) Seems I was the only person who didn't notice!
Great top bro, I love the pizza spidey mold, the black suit design actually was designed by a fan who sold the idea to marvel for 20 dollars, I wonder what was his face when he reallised marvel made billions of dollars and hi just got 20 dollars, pocker face.
Ah yes I remember that story!
think you missed just one, that retro carded Pizza Spidey with the different logo and lighter paint job for the blue
I love the mold for it. A lean Spider-Man is perfect and Andrew's physique is the ideal look for Peter Parker. 5:22 his hands are backwards.
Yeah for the longest time that was the best Spidey out there!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour I'd say he is the best Spider-Man.
I personally can’t stand all the different unwanted Variants, Spider-Man,Captain America, Wolverine,Thor, Venom, Daredevil, Fantastic four, enough already the only one that makes sense with all the different variants is Iron Man, I’m like put out some battle damage figures other than that let’s move on there so many more other figures that need doing, I’m growing old here and i believe Ron Frenz & Tom Defalco and maybe Mike Zeck I believe where responsible for the Black and white Spidey.
Battle damaged figures is a great idea. I would love a Spider-Man with a torn up costume to pose battling all his villains.
Honestly in my opinion, the new retro Spidey is not that bulky at all. He's appropriately muscular and he's actually still pretty lean. Even though you can still be strong by being lean, strength and muscle mass does have some correlation so i appreciate that someone who can lift a building support, Spider-Man, at least has slightly more mass,Not too much like Captain America or Wolverine. Just enough 👌. And believe it or not, a lot of gymnasts who are very athletic have somewhat of the same build as Retro Spidey. Pizza Spider-Man is still pretty good imo. Love that figure. It really represents 90s and 2000s spidey. The modern artists like to flip flop between a bulkier spidey and a skinnier version so both Pizza and retro are suitable for modern Spider-Man, example of bulkier Spider-Man is by Mike Deodato Jr, and a leaner Spider-Man Is by Giuseppe Camuncoli🙌
Those artist comparisons are perfect. I think you're right!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour haha nice🙌
With the Pizza Spidey body. I NEED the Unlimited and Superior MK 1 suits represented! The Unlimited suit is my favorite alternative suit, and the eyes on the first Superior suit are so cool. As a side note, I also love the Ben Reilly suit! If I get the chance, I plan to repaint the blue part to a metallic dark blue, as well as the logo and eye frames to match, as the coloring in a lot of panels (especially with Bagley drawing) depicted the eye frames and logos matching and bleeding into the blue part of the design. It's actually pretty inconsistent, but I think that look is almost nicer than the intended design in a way.
Dude those little custom touches sound great. I know what you mean about the changes in designs. I think that would work really well!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour thanks! I always loved the way Bagley’s art was colored in that particular era of the 90s. The eye frames matched the blue shading, and even more so with that Ben Reilly logo haha
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour update: I customized it, and I think it looks good! Very reminiscent of the comic paint variant for the Mafex Spidey figure. When the Ben Reilly Mafex figure comes out later this month, I’m definitely going to custom that one too, especially since it has those amazing 90s Bagley lenses to match that iconic highlighted look. If there’s any way, I’d love to show you!
Thats symbiote Spiderman remember me two characters: Ai Apaec (Dark Avengers) and Tarantula ( Erath 1616/Ultimate Clone Saga)
up until amazing fantasy pizza was always my favorite looking mold
Agreed!
Retro spiderman is a perfect representation of the ditko era which is the definitive look for spider-man for a lot of fans, pizza spider spider-man is imo the worst spidey figure just because of his flat elongated torso and not being able to do the splits or anywhere near to it which in my opinion is the most important thing when it comes to that character, being a skinny looking spider-man is fine for a young ultimate version of him but definitely not my definitive look for him
I really appreciate how the opinions on Spider-Man are so subjective. I think my love of Pizza Spidey comes from the fact I started reading in the 90's with Mark Bagley as the premier artist who always drew Spidey with that skinny type physique.
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour if that's the version u grew up with then I get that, same for me with ditko and mcfarlane being my favourites
The symbiote and black costume figures are also different. The single carded figure is the symbiote with a slightly smaller spider and fist and wall crawling hands (with symbiote black dots on his hands) while the black costume that comes with Kraven has fists and thwip hands without the black dot and the added extra battle damage Peter Parker head.
Hey thanks man. I had no idea about the differences!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour Dave, there are ALWAYS differences. I'd love to see an update of this video acknowledging the Retro Pizza (different colors, matte finish vs. the high gloss of the original, different kind of pizza -- sausage instead of pepperoni), Raft Spidey, Symbiote Spidey vs. Black Costume non-symbiote from the Kraven two-pack, the China exclusive Pizza Spidey etc.
Also, it might be good to mention that the Superior Spider-Man actually came first. Pizza Spidey is a retool of that one with a longer torso and different head and hands, and it came out I think a year or so before Pizza Spidey. Same wonky, jutting-out hips though. Wish they'd redo him at least to make him taller, preferably with a more accurate costume.
The funny thing is, since I'm pretty sure he had the symbiote still, he should've had the black dot hands. Maybe it was the cloth one.
@@ethanpease5936 It was the cloth one by then. I used to think he still had the symbiote too but re-read the story and he had the cloth by then.
there butterfly joints always snapped off after a year of me having them. it was because the arms are mad stiff. this body sucks horribly, at least in my experience with them
That sculpt has definitely had its day!
The retro card pizza spidey pops more, almost like it crawled off the pages of a freshly inked comic, that's the difference
It's the pant apps, makes it look less plastic
Hmm I think both my Pizza Spidey's are the regular ones. I kinda want the card one now!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour I got lucky and found mine at the comic shop for 20 bucks about 5 months ago
Gonna miss this mold to be honest. Retro’s a good late Ditko/Romita Sr. style Spidey but I personally can’t stand when Spider-Man is too buff or tall. I would’ve preferred if they just shrunk down the 12 inch figure, because that one nails Spidey’s physique.
Great call on the 12" proportions!
Hey man..your superior spider's hands are in the wrong place. I mean there switch
Lol thanks dude. He’s fixed!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour no problem man
Yeah but the retro Spiderman is more of a older version of Spiderman in my Pinyan and the pizza Spiderman is more of a younger version to me
I use that same combination too!
I love the vintage spiderman. In my head cannon pizza spidey is teenage Peter and vintage spidey is like older colledge, animated series age Peter
Hey Devin, that's an absolutely perfect kind of chronology transition. I definitely have Retro Spider-Man as my modern Peter.
The spider symbol is the blank space on the hom Spider-Man
Another great video keep up the good work
Thanks ZBOM, I ain't slowing down any time soon!
Personally like the Renew Your Vows Spidey. Maybe because I read the comic and hate One More Day. But his body feels a bit more athletic but still acrobatic and lithe enough.
Yeah I totally agree
Hello I’m Alex...Long time watcher...first time commenter.... I’ve noticed all the wrestling terms and references.... yet have yet to see a wrestling fig or video.... wassup wit dat?!?
Hi Alex! Always great to have a fellow wrestling fan on the channel. It's true that my biggest obsession alongside Marvel is pro-wrestling but the figures have always kind of eluded me. I think the reason is because I'm a frustrated former wrestler myself so every time I see a figure, despite how good it is a part of my brain will be saying "People should be reviewing your wrestling action figures, not the other way round!" So there's definitely some salty feelings there! Although I have to admit I might be tempted to get some of the NJPW figures if they appear over here!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour yes i can understand, if I’m guessing correctly, I believe you are in the UK and I’ve heard they are harder to get there(even though I’m still salty you guys got the wcw galoob exclusives.... who doesn’t want a big josh and el egante?!). How long and where did you work? I just hit my 17th year full time on the 1st....ps your American accents are money like Shane o Mac!
Lol at this being recommended after spidey 2099 review
The algorithm knows what's what!
pizza spidey is a great mark bagley spidey; the new retro card buck is a great john romita spidey
The new retro spider-man has aesthetic and proportion choices that honestly turn me off about it. Especially that lollipop it’s got-it’s SO UNSIGHTLY ☹️
Lol I've heard that complaint before!
Then don't pose it that way. It's also unsightly to twist the waist swivel of a figure 180 degrees, which is why no one does it.
idk man i broke my black spiderman figure recently
Ah man that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that!
I hope you changed the superior spiderman hands.
In the video when you showed us superior spiderman I noticed his thumbs towards the inside. When they should be out. I think the hands are misplaced. Left and right side. Thank you
Lol don’t worry, I fixed it!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour thanks david... now I can sleep at night.
I had the pizza spiderman figure but I broke the peg on it head off when I tried to switch it to it’s lifted mask
That’s easy to do. I broke mine too!
that superior figure isn’t actually the pizza body. to me its like a preliminary version of it, it has similar arms and legs but the torso and pelvis have different proportions
Oh interesting. I never realized
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour it was retooled for the ultimate vulture that came in the ultimate spider-man two pack. i guess after the superior figure they wanted a more slender torso for their (at the time) flagship spider-man
@@dreamybulllxxxit was also used for the wendigo wave nightcrawler
I kinda really like the clawed symbiote spiderman, except the eyes.
Yeah it’s a really odd design!
What was the three Spider-Man figures on the spinner tron 5000? Im kinda new to marvel legends.
Imo the retro Spider-man buck is just a good as the pizza Spidey one but I do like my pizza Spidey better. I think Hasbro should somehow combine the two.
A Frankenstein mash up would be the ideal!
I like the retro body, it's probably the best body for an older Spider-Man. I wish they'd do another Ultimate Spider-Man figure release, it's my favorite run of the comics. I wish I picked up a few of these like the original, the first retro Ben Reily, and that two pack symbiote suit. I have the Big time badass figure, love him but you can tell that the mold is old and needs to be a bit reworked.
Bring on retro big time!
It's so funny how low you rated the house of M spidey. I just got him recently out of frustration for having my THIRD retro spidey ordered cancelled which makes me so mad that that I can't get him because sellers look at the market and decide "nah, I am not selling this to this guy." I have a display on my Microphone with Doc Ock taking on the Spider-Verse and House of M is in it because he came with the web. Great job as usual. I like your choices of your top five, and I would get them except Spider-Punk, retro card ben reilly scarlet...are way too expensive and Kane Scarlet because I really have never liked Kane as a character. With the new retro set, which I pre-ordered because fool me once, I am hoping a few of these drop a bit in price.
Hey those sellers will be sobbing in to their cereal when Hasbro release a better 90's version of that Spider-Man next year. (I'm calling it now!)
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour From your mouth to the Hasbo Gods' ear my friend.
Symbiote is my personal favorite with Ben Reilly at a close 2nd
It's a tough call, they're both great designs
I have the black suit , the 2099 an the new miles figure which is basically a pizza spidey
Yeah that's a really old body now
The superior spider man hands😧
Why did Superior Spider Man have backwards hands?💀
Sensational spider man -
(Ben reily)
Gotta love him!
THERE IS ONLY ONE SPIDERMAN AND THAT IS, JOHN ROMITAS SPIDERMAN WITH STEVE DITKOS COMING IN SECOND. THIS PIZZA , SPAGHETTI , OR LINGUINI SPIDERNOODLE, WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, IS JUST CRAPOLA.
Okay but why are Superior Spider-Man’s hands backwards
To see if you would notice!
Why are there so many shot cuts
Wait why is your superior spidey's hands swaped
Wow well noticed! I didn't even catch that myself!
I noticed it a wile ago i wasn't sure if it was a 1 time mistake
Superior Spider-Man is not on the pizza spidey body though
Is he not? I always thought he was. Do you know who else shares his buck?
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour strangely enough, I think it's unique to him
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour Superior came first. Pizza is a re-mold of Superior sharing some parts, most notably elongating the torso.
Chef’s kiss 😆
Mwah!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour 😆
I got a Pizza Spider-man finally!
Still classic
Good buck, hate the feet so much
I never really thought twice about the feet. What's so bad about them?
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour to me they seem a little platypus like, but I guess that really helps with stability
@@c.t.martin3915 I can appreciate that. Such a shame Hasbro are bound and determined to never include stands!
Sorry for the late comment but house of m spidey doesn’t have spider on his chest.
Of course he does. The entire red portion IS A SPIDER.
Oh I know he doesn't have one. I'm just saying he would look a lot better if he did :)
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour yeah that’s true
@@alandoane9168 wasn’t saying that he didn’t
House of M spiderman doesn't have the spider symbol on his chest on the comics.
Yeah that was a criticism directed at the comic design rather than the figure.
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour ah ok, that makes sense then the comic design didn't look bad without the symbol. But as a toy it looks odd
Hot take, I prefer the black costume with smaller eyes
Hopefully the new retro one nails that look
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour The promo pics look pretty good, but we'll have to wait and see how they are in hand
House of M Spider-Man lol hasbro is laughing at us, I’m still waiting on a Riot & Agony figure but instead we might get 8 more wolverine figures before that ( shirtless, skeleton, movie suit etc)
Dude I hear ya!
agree, retro spiderman kinda bulky, the pizza spiderman is the best representation of peter parker
Yeah I think there’s a sweet spot in the middle
I've watched alot of these videos over the last week and I've just realized when you say Walgreens exclusive you mean Walmart hah. I don't collect these figures so I'm not in the know. Always thought it was weird a pharmacy had an exclusive line of toys.
He doesn't. Walgreens has action figures and has its own exclusives. It's a thing and no one knows why.
The one he talks about in this video was actually a Toys R Us exclusive. I love that he mentions every retailer on earth except the one it came from. :-)
if u dont like the figure why did u get it
Probably part of my completionist phase
Intro is way too long, and same for about every figure reviewed.
Thanks bucket, I appreciate the feedback. When you're doing everything yourself the one thing I think you miss most is an outside eye to help you edit. I've cut out the long intro (It's only rarely that I use it.) and I'll aim to be more succinct with future lists. Thanks for watching!
@@DisplayingModelBehaviour I completely understand. It's easy to go on when it's something you're passionate about.
I hate that symbiote Spider-Man design
