I’m still sitting in Restaurant da Michele and had cacio e Pepe for the first time. I have nothing to compare it to, but it was soooo good! We went to the Colosseo this morning and came here based on this video.
Thanks to you, we went to Trattoria pizzeria da Michele for our first dinner in Rome and had cacio e pepe. It was amazing! We told the waiter and his family that you referred us there. They spoke very highly of you and said to tell you hello.
Thank you guys here in Rome with my girlfriend for a week and decided to visit the places you guys have recommended, and so far, every recommendation has been phenomenal.
Sir,the way u r eating ur pasta, cutting them off near ur mouth but taking care that u r not putting it into someone else's plate but holding it on ur fork and putting it on ur plate is excellent.please teach ur companion too.❤😅🙏
I love your honest opinions and backed up with the videos. Maybe because alot of tourists have no clue how real pasta should be cooked or sauced, give their opinions based on that. Whereas you two are experts when it comes to Italian food so your opinion holds water. ❤
I enjoyed your video of Rome and used it on my trip. I came across today a must restaurant you should put on your list to review near Torre Argentina that I think is a serious contender for the Cacio e Peppe. The restaurant is Bottega Tredici. The pasta was cooked to perfection and the pecorino formaggio was glorious. This full Italian walked away totally stunned in a good way. I might have to go back and test the Carbonara tomorrow!
I went to Rome in March and we tried many restaurants. I found most of them because of social medias and was so disappointed with the food in Rome. I should have watched your videos before to go. Now, I just want to go back. Your videos are perfect. 👌 Thanks!
3 pasta dishes? Um, you missed the most underrated one; Pasta Alla Gricia. I just came back from Rome last month where I had the best version at Da Enzo al 29. Soooo good. So much more flavourful than Cacio e Pepe, and a nice alternative if you dont want egg or tomato sauce. La Gricia is a Rome staple guys. And Da Enzo was by far our best meal in Rome, definitely worth the wait! Every restaurant is allowed an off night, we went to Nanarello the night before (highly recommended) and my Amatriciana was soupy and soft like Chef-Boyardee. Give Da Enzo another chance. Also Best Tiramisu.
I appreciate your HONEST reviews!! My entire trip to Italy this coming fall is based on 2+ years of note taking from UA-cam & Google Map reviews. I've found so many "off the beaten path" restaurants from "walking" the streets via Google Maps (& the attached reviews) -- I can't wait to try them! Unfortunately we just took Rome off our itinerary for fall so we could squeeze in Venice, San Gimignano (thanks to your video!), and Cinque Terre. We'll have to return to Rome another time (spring?). Grazie for your videos and HONEST reviews!!
that's because the guy is italian..of course italians are stricter when judging pasta cause they tried a lot of it and what can be perceived as good by foreigner can be average for them.. A hint for foreigners would be to look at italian food bloggers videos with automatic subtitles and not foreign food bloggers. ua-cam.com/video/sF_cevi9vro/v-deo.html
I absolutely love your videos, this one is so great for the truth, I know that I want to go t Italy, your news are fantastic............thank you so much.......Namaste
You two are so adorable! Thank you for this video. You were very polite yet honest. We will be in Rome next month for the first time so we are so excited!
Me and my friend went to Da Enzo in February, we were there 1st thing for lunch and I wonder if that’s why we didn’t have the quality issues you guys had. But I agree, out of the places we ate, I wasn’t blown away by Da Enzo and I’m excited to be staying out of the major tourist zone when I’m back in Rome next week. Love your videos ❤
Thank you for your honest reviews! We totally agree, for instance we do not agree that Al'antico vinaio is one of the best panino shops in Firenze. We found many more migliori negozi with amazing panino. Sending you guys our love from Greece!
What a timely video for us! We are going to Rome in July, so this video was so helpful. We especially loved your honesty when it comes to flavours, that is something that missing in many other reviewers. What about Venice? We know there are many tourist traps, expensive places... ;) Thanks!
Yes it's true. But there are also many places where locals go (e.g. i bacari, for inexpensive finger food and a glass of prosecco). Although Venetians could be a little grumpy, try to learn where they eat out.
Ah Guys, great review. I wish we'd had these tips when we went there in 2014. We spent a week near the Colosseum, walked the same streets, and it was hard to find good food consistently. It was a lot easier the week before in the Latin Quarter of Paris. Keep on traveling and eating. Love the vids.😊
So I’m in Rome right now, just got back from Ristaraunte Da Michelle per your guys recommendation. This place was amazing. My only regret was only ordering one dish for myself. Should have done two like Jesse did. This place was everything I was hoping to find in a place in Rome. Thanks for this video!!
Thank you for this video (and others; my wife and I particularly enjoyed the Siena and San Gimigniano tour). Request: please (unless I’m totally overlooking them) put in your program notes the names of the three restaurants. Thanks!
I can cook amazing amatriciana pasta, but carbonara has some kind of magic that I haven't been abe to recreate. In Rome we ate at a small place in Trastevere. There were some other places with a huge line, but this place had no line, and the menu was only in Italian. I'd like to tell you what it's called, but they don't seem to be on google maps. It was somewhere close to Piazza Santa Maria. The rigatoni carbonara were just extraordinary. Creamy, hot, cheesy, peppery, perfect. They explained to me how they do it, and it's the same as everyone else: guanciale, pecorino (and parmigiano), and yolk. But somehow, theirs is just miles better than every other carbonara I've ever had.
Your video recommendation is working! I went there a week ago for lunch and the carbonara at Da Michele has now gone up to 14 Euros. Yes, still worth it. Had a half liter of the house wine which was really good as well.
Many thanks Jessi and Alessio for your honesty and candor - you’re awesome! Yes, it’s always cool to see your videos where you find places that you can recommend / give your highest rating / are excited about (like Arthur Street in NY). However, it’s also extremely helpful to hear about your experiences with places where you had a different opinion than the popular vote/ratings. People are free to make their own decisions and can choose to try or not try based on your analysis/evaluation (people have different preferences). Thank you again - your trip to Rome was a fabulous idea - looking forward to seeing more videos!
I visited Rome about 5 years ago and the best food we had was in Trastevere. Also, the Capuchin crypts was a great historical tour if you have a chance to see it!
Hi…always love your videos in Italy. The food looks really good. I agree a smaller cafe versus a large restaurant is better when it comes to taste. Hopefully I will visit Italy. Love you both 🤗🤗
Mandi! I'm surprised you didn't go to Monosilio... Apparently levels beyond delicious, but you'll pay dearly for it... Worth a try next time 😉😉 Cincin! 🥂
Agree I think a comparison can be made with cities. For example, I say to foreign friends: "if you like Florence (the restaurant in the centre) but find it too touristy, then try visiting Bologna (the restaurant near but outside the centre) and you will discover a city that is not Florence" but is almost equally magnificent and very genuine and you will fall in love with it" And it usually goes like this 😁. Take note that I'm not Bolognese
A parte il cibo tutto buono della nostra meravigliosa Italia che mi manca un sacco, io vorrei davvero fare i complimenti a Jessi perche' e' di una bellezza disarmante, elegante e posata. Una ventata di aria fresca.
Agreed, maybe the chefs are having a bad day or training someone new, too busy for demand, any number of reasons why the food was a bit off. It may just be an off day. They did look like they were working hard to serve everyone. The first place I will keep in mind and share with my daughter.
I’ve been all over Itália 🇮🇹 and I’m a true turophile! Of course I LOVE the food but I WILL eat any cheese 🧀 by itself: from fresh burrata to the most pungent Taleggio! 🇧🇷🇵🇹🩰❤️
Amazing how gracious Jessi is when eating anything in Italy, never a complaint. Quite unlike Alessio's rude, arrogant condemnations of any Italian food in America. I've been to Italy several times over the past 40 years and the food there just isn't that wonderful. What people like is all based on what someone is used to eating. I am of third generation mixed northern Italian and Sicilian heritage and I vividly remember watching my maternal Sicilian great grandmother and grandmother cooking for us as a child. I thought that the pasta in Italy was overly bland and dry. The pizza was just so different than what I grew up eating, that I didn't enjoy any of it. The meats were very fatty and loaded with gristle, almost to the point of being inedible. Seafood was displayed on platters under glass covered in some type of oily liquid, which I refused to order anywhere. Most of the time I was concerned that I would get food poisoning due to their horrid food preparation and sanitation practices, especially in Rome, Genoa, Venice and Sicily.
5:23 I was in Da Enzo and had the Cacio e Pepe in July 2021. I had the same experience; the pasta was over cooked and the sauce had separated and was too liquid and grey in colour. I was eating alone and given a bad table after queuing for over 30 minutes to get a seat. I would not re or go back. I think in the past it was probably a good simple place but it’s fame on social media has had a negative impact on the food quality. There were also far more foreigners than Italians there which is not a good sign either.
Whenever I make pasta I always use whole-grain pasta because I’m a diabetic. All that pasta made from Refined flours cause huge spikes in insulin and get absorbed quickly, which causes problems.
Having family in the restaurant business for 50 years. It sounds like that restaurant is probably good, but understaffed for their increase in popularity. I would try to visit them one more time later on.
PS Can you please review Amatriciana? It was my favorite sauce at Carrabbas and they stopped serving it. Now I can't find any restaurants in my area that serves it. I have to make it myself 😢 abs wanted to make sure I'm making it right.
