  • Coming to Theatres on September 4, 2009
    Starring: Colin Beavan, Michelle Conlin
Author Colin Beavan, in research for his new book, began the No Impact Project in November 2006. A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no longer avoid pointing the finger at himself, Colin leaves behind his liberal complacency for a vow to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption no problem. That is, until his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two year-old daughter are dragged into the fray. Laura Gabbert and Justin Scheins film provides a front row seat into the familial strains and strengthened bonds that result from Colins and Michelles struggle with this radical lifestyle change.

Just watched the doc, and although I'm already vegan, shop at farmers markets and my local veg coop, buy in bulk, use reusable containers, recycle, switch out my light bulbs for more energy efficient versions, purchase as much organic as possible, have an urban garden, and so on, I must say, I still feel inspired to do more! Thanks to the entire family for being such a great inspiration!

Wow they both look much healthier towards the end! Their skin looks better, they've both lost lots of weight. Awesome! Fantastic that she avoided diabetes with more activity and healthier food! Just avoided decades of chronic illness. Good work No Impact Family!

Good for him! We have a similar guy in the UK, he lived for a year without money. He was a bit idealistic, but apparently the experiment was a success. I'm happy for him.

Very engaging movie. And its message, for those who are open to hearing it, is that when we live a more natural live with less consumption an a connection to the outdoors, we are actually happier. Most of us in the West never get a chance to find out what it feels like to be a homo sapiens in our

I read the book. It definitely had no impact. I still do the same things and I'm happy about it. I already live a relatively minimalist life, so I produce very little waste (maybe a bag a month, to every 6 weeks). While I drive almost 100,000 miles a year (for work), personally, I don't do that much. (Most errands are done on the way to or from work.)
I still use things like A/C, and refuse to stop, because I need to sleep comfortably more-so than I need to impress climate freaks. I have a TV, but I stream content, because most network based TV is trash, but it's off most of the time.
If I was to put a finger on one thing I could improve, it's to have fewer parasytic draws from plugged in devices. They might only use a few milliwatts of power, but 24/7/365 - it can add up.

Yea, interesting point. But sometimes when someone does something extreme, maybe it could move us to make at least small changes to improve our lives and maybe there could be a ripple effect. We're going to see the next movie either way, right? :-)

Just saw this doc and wow! What an eye opener! A little extreme for me tho' (well, a lot extreme) but it does makes me realize I could do more to leave the earth in better shape. Just recycling, walking ocassionally, buying some local food and turning off lights doesn't cut it. I'm feeling very guilty for having just replaced my 15 yr old tube TV (which I rarely watch) with a new HD LCD...

Anapao, you are contributing every hour of everyday. Did you throw something away today? Did you buy something you didnt really need in the last week? Are you on a computer right now? If we all stopped consuming so much crap it WOULD absolutly cause a reaction in the markets. The key is making this idea the manstream

I'm really impressed by your comment. That you can just kind of take a step back and analyze your daily actions. Some ppl don't give it a second thought when they toss that bag they just got.
I tend to get so frustrated at people because I have this notion in my head that consumeristic wasting people are all brain washed who will be forever stuck in their ways. It's this terrible superior way of looking at them, I know.
And you sort of proved me wrong. Love it!

  • @eminemfloop2695

@mlschott its not about the impact its about the lifestyle. Finding ways to actually benefit outselves without making an unneeded impact. billions of clean water a day are getting contaminated as they go down the drain, unused, and into the sewer. its not about making no impact, its about making less impact and being happier and healthier. if watching the film shows you how much better life can be, then that is a positive impact.

I think this is a great idea but really wonder whether I could do it. The average american has an ecological footprint almost 4 times the global average and if all humans lived to our level it would take more than four earths to supply the resources. Hard choices are going to have to be made and maybe No Impact Man is leading the way.

Umm hey, if you need to do your laundry w/o electricity, the Best thing to use is a clean, sterilized (brand new is best of course) toilet plunger. Its better than feet (sigh) and better than a washboard, buttons and finery die on washboards.
I lived in an extremely rural area for a few yrs and bcs of that I can even pioneer a piece of land, no electricity or running water and go to bed clean as a whistle every night, even in the dead of winter.

@katieshealinggarden you should really read his book before you criticise him. He is much more happy with his life than he was. It's not that fact that we use technology. It's not about that. It's about a lifestyle change. He was seeing what it would be like to NOT use these things for a while so he could choose what actually benefits us as a human being. He is much happier and healthier and more social and has more SEX without making trash or importing food.

@Arrivinglate Thanks for trying, but it's no use to argue with trolls or people too stupid to present their arguments in a logical way.
To everyone saying No Impact Man should go move to the country and live on the land, he actually talks about that. Because so many people live in urban environments nowadays, his goal was SPECIFICALLY to see if he could succeed in the city :] City dwellers make a HUGE impact by numbers alone. If they can't learn to reduce their ecological imprints, yikes!

Let's see... He is writing a book, and all his "No Impact Man" stunt is filmed, i saw people do way worse then this to sell things. If he was really the real no impact man, he would had done it and a filmmaker, journalist or TV crew would had discover him.
But no, he is a writer and he is basically doing a stunt for a year, so there after he will be popular, and people will love him, and he will spend jetfuel all year long to go to the seminar and talk, he would become the super impact man.
