I went to that final round at Castle Pines. It was easily the most exciting tournament I've ever been to. Lowery sunk long shots on 15 and 17, but a bogey on 16 for him was the difference. Rich Beem had an incredibly hot 2 weeks. He held off Tiger and won the PGA Championship 2 weeks later.
Agreed. This was the craziest finish to a golf tournament that I've ever seen. Couldn't believe it when Lowery holed the double eagle and thought he was going to win after that.
Same. I remember watching this when I was 11 on TV on a family holiday. I didn’t watch a lot of pro golf back then and so I didn’t appreciate at the time how ridiculous that 3 hole stretch from Lowery was.
Watched it live as well. They came back from a rain delay and Beem was up so much the announcers were saying Beem winning was a foregone conclusion but they had to play it out and then all this unfolded. It was amazing.
Steve Lowery was fun to watch , thought he would do well on Champions tour. You never know how someones game will age, We will see how well Rich Beems game has held up now that he is 50.
And remember that the original Stableford system had an albatross at +10 instead of +8…. I really miss how crazy this tournament was; it was the highest rated tournament outside the four majors for a number of years, and this was one of the reasons why!
The International was always a cool late summer tournament, the modified Stableford scoring was a nice change up, the guy who ran Castle Pines and this tourney was a little quirky but a great host and hospitality guy. In high school we would play all 3 formats (stroke, match, points) during the season, so I thought it was perfect that the tour did as well from 1999-2006
@@qwaszx2 I really don't think we'll see anyone on tour (ANY tour) hole out two shots in three holes of such length again in our lifetimes. I saw it live, and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
In fact wasn’t Lowery’s last six holes one of everything possible under the system: Bogey, double bogey, par, birdie, eagle, and double eagle (not in order here of course)?
I watched this live and when they said Beem makes eagle to clinch this event. I remember thinking 8 pts for a 2 on 17. It's possible. When they announce the pts they say 2 for Birdie 5 for eagle and 8 for the improbable Albatross. This is at altitude. Ball goes further. Lowry hit a 6i. Incredible ending though. That is what makes this event incredible. An eagle erases 5 bogies, not 2. An albatross is 4 birds not 3. What a concept... Birdie fest!!!
The International ran under the modified Stableford scoring system; instead of fewest strokes winning, there were points depending on over or under par: Double bogey or worse = -3 points Bogey = -1 Par = 0 Birdie = + 2 points Eagle = + 5 Double eagle = + 8 (originally +10).
I remember falling out of my chair watching this live! Best finish ever! I was rooting for Lowry at the time. He never looked the part of an athlete, not quite Lumpy, more like JB Holmes. I guess neither did Beemer.
If I remember Lowery had everything possible in the scoring system-double bogey, bogey, par, birdie, eagle, double eagle-in the last seven or eight holes.
Galleries weren't as rowdy then as they are now, so these days I'm perfectly fine without them (as an avid viewer). Until this pandemic is over, we can make our own noise at home.
Has anyone ever had a better 3 hole stretch than Lowery?? Phenomenal golf
I shot -22 in 2006. Tiger Woods Golf for PS2. Golf is easy.

I watched this live and watching it again now, it doesn’t get any less crazy!

I had plans to make a video on this, it truly is one of the wildest, most insane finishes to a tournament.
Gus Lascola Gus, you my friend, are true golf fan and your vids are incredible
Facts
Craziest sequence I’ve ever seen on any back nine on Sunday
Steve Lowery was fun to watch , thought he would do well on Champions tour. You never know how someones game will age, We will see how well Rich Beems game has held up now that he is 50.
Rich works for sky sports golf now. Fantastic addition. Love him
Rich Beem and Steve Lowery. Two of the most underrated golfers of the late 90's/early 2000's.
And remember that the original Stableford system had an albatross at +10 instead of +8….
I really miss how crazy this tournament was; it was the highest rated tournament outside the four majors for a number of years, and this was one of the reasons why!
I loved that tournament. But Tiger rarely played it. Back then, it was hard for tournaments to continue if Tiger didn't play in them.
Beemer Channeling Sugar Ray Frosted TIps.
Tremendous Lowery.
I really miss this tournament.
The International was always a cool late summer tournament, the modified Stableford scoring was a nice change up, the guy who ran Castle Pines and this tourney was a little quirky but a great host and hospitality guy.
In high school we would play all 3 formats (stroke, match, points) during the season, so I thought it was perfect that the tour did as well from 1999-2006
You would think the PGA UA-cam channel could get this right . . . But it was played at CASTLE PINES, not Castle Point.
Tell the millennial making the vids
To hole out 2 times in 3 holes from the fairway is amazing! I chipped in twice in a round before but from only like 15 yards and for birdies.
He holed out from the fringe too
That up and down birdie from the water was pretty sick too.
What a game of golf!
Lowery had a nice rhythmic swing eh
August 2002 = the month of Beem.
i miss rich beam . nobody loved it more. hope he plays on champion tour
you should try catch some UK golf coverage from time to time, Rich is a great commentator for us over here
Unbelievably, I learned English for the first time back when I was a toddler by watching the 2002 tour. No joke.
Damn Lowery his such a good putt at the end. Insane finish
Hole out for an eagle on 15, then double eagle on 17? That's insanity.
@@qwaszx2 I really don't think we'll see anyone on tour (ANY tour) hole out two shots in three holes of such length again in our lifetimes. I saw it live, and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Got it up and down out of the water too
Why have we never heard of this before?
We? lol
Because the 2 guys involved aren't big names
When a win of any kind meant something!!
the main TOUR needs to come back to Denver!
In fact wasn’t Lowery’s last six holes one of everything possible under the system: Bogey, double bogey, par, birdie, eagle, and double eagle (not in order here of course)?
It was nuts!!!!

I watched this one. Back in this day it was.... well it was like the NBA finals
That was a nice competition
Bruh that first shot
More international highlights, please!
That's just Beemer's hair you're talking about! 😂👍🏻
Was one of the best events on the PGA Tour. Of course in all their brilliance the Tour eliminated this event.
so good !
Why does this look like an intern took vertical video of these highlights from her iPhone pointed at a 13” standard def TV?
Why were they saying points rather than under par??
The International ran under the modified Stableford scoring system; instead of fewest strokes winning, there were points depending on over or under par:
Double bogey or worse = -3 points
Bogey = -1
Par = 0
Birdie = + 2 points
Eagle = + 5
Double eagle = + 8 (originally +10).
@@2themoon863 That's what made this tournament special and unique. It's sad they got rid of it five years later.
“When I gave you two fingers, how did that feel? That has to be amazing” .....🤔
A sunk-in feeling
When Ashworth was a good clothing company

If I remember Lowery had everything possible in the scoring system-double bogey, bogey, par, birdie, eagle, double eagle-in the last seven or eight holes.
This was why this tournament yearly had the highest or second-highest non-major TV ratings; a lot of us in Colorado miss this tournament…
wow
Could make it from 204 but not from 15 feet. Damn shame
Golf is so much better with a gallery.

FIRST
No ur not
Anyone excited about being first in a comment section probably has never won anything significant before.
@@wooddood6952 you're right it's a 2 way tie between this comment and $7 on a scratch off lottery ticket
Whys he crying
Lowery’s putting was terrible, lol
Yup, he should work on making more shots from the fairway to avoid putting.
He holed one from the fringe
What a joke these guys are, I can shoot +35 why should they be pro and not me?
It’s stableford scoring not stroke play
