Been a while but... Optics to great lighthouse, or even just a plain lighthouse, gives you +1 food +1 production on every sea resource, and an extra +1 on fish, meaning your fish becomes 4 food 1 production before being improved, and your pearls become 2 food 1 production 2 gold before improvements. Optics is pretty much the first thing you should research with Venice, even if you can't take full advantage of the free merchant of venice that it nets you while playing a OCC. Personal rule on King and higher: if any player enters the classical era on an archipelago map, don't start build the great lighthouse. If you are already building it, start praying :P Funny fact: you know what would have given you the great lighthouse? Buying a normal lighthouse for 400 gold instead of buying a workboat for 240.
Interesting start here. You're pretty well defended and isolated, which isn't so bad for a SCC, right? Barbarians on archipelago maps are so annoying, though.
I think the biggest issue on this map is going to be safe trade. This is where most of our power as Venice comes from. Still, I'm sure I'll find a way to deal with it! ;o)
Personally I think honor is much better for first policy because it gives you 8 culture per barbarian killed. I uncover some land and wait for them to spawn there and then I farm them its kind of cheaty but well. When you are on higher difficulty it is so helpful.
Normally I would agree. But the type of map I was on meant I was unlikely to run into many early barbarians - I also wanted to rush some early Wonders and city growth. The culture I can catch up with later. Plus the pantheon is really helping with that too.
I always start with freedom for more cities, than Honor for culture and eventually tradition if I don't go with faith, or two next...then the science thingy and if it comes down to ideology.........I always choose different one

Sri Pada is in Sri Lanka, I think, it seems to make sense.

I'm not even playing and I raged at the Great Lighthouse loss. Gonna prolly have to pepper trade routes w/ defensive ships for protection.
This is gonna be a good game, i can feel it :)
