From the initial trailer, I actually thought Robert Downey Jr was gonna play one character, and because he's a spy, he has to take on different identities. But this is actually much more clever... Because with these different characters, what he's actually doing is basically playing every white guy in the show. And showing the different kinds of 'Western' racism through every variation. All the characters he plays in this show display some form of bigotry towards the Captain, or the Vietnamese in general. He's playing the different faces of Western Imperialism. Brilliant concept performed by a Class Actor. 👍🏽
I saw an interview where they were talking about this and they were initially just going to have different actors for all the roles, but RDJ brought it up to Park Chan Wook to play all the characters as a take on how westerners, or moreso white Americans look in the eyes of Asians.
@@aznmochibunny Absolutely. There are so many moments in the show, between the Captain and RDJ, where the Captain’s silent facial expression are saying a lot more than his mouth is willing to. And these are the things that RDJ’s characters in the show either never picks up on or just will fully ignore. We all miss so much nuance and insight in our own daily lives because we only pay attention to the things we want to, especially when we are in conversation with others.
Literally one of the best (if not the best!) scenes in the series! I've been waiting for it and it's absolutely worth waiting! ❤❤❤ That idea of Robert playing them all is freaking brilliant❤️ Love The Sympathizer since I first read the novel and the series is amazing!
Bro it’s a play on when holywood used to have a single asian guy play several roles cause they thought all of em look the same anyways so it’s insignificant… also to show America through these characters that’s why they have the same face yk , i might not be the best at explaining it so I recommend you check out some articles
I disagree, I think it’s really adding to the commentary of the “one Asian fits all” trope in Hollywood. Also RDJ is legit killing it, each character is incredibly distinct. I’m not having any trouble picking up on who is who
"I'm a dude playing a dude disguised another dude". Kirk Lazarus' acting chops are unlimited!
Robin Williams would have been perfect for this. RIP

Why does the congressman look like a fusion Reagan and nixon
Im scared😵🥰
Why do all these white guys look the same 😂
Funny! Took me a minute to realise.
All white dudes look the same for asians eyes
RD x 4! Wow!
Oh, he’s going to absolutely crush it as Doom
😎
Only true RDJ fans came here after "new mask, same task"
Why have this gimmick? The story doesn’t need this one actor many characters thing to drive its story

they dont even show true vietnamese. they show east asians, not brown skinned vietnamese
@@hu1zhengVietnamese are mostly white skin and looks more like Chinese. Only former Khmer minority have brown skin and looks like Thai/Cambodian
@@hu1zheng well they speak Vietnamese in the show, do you think they speak Chinese lol. Blud probably thinks Vietnam is in Africa.
Downey s trying to copy Eddie Murphy playing multiple parts !
The least good looking Vietnamese actor is the lead ! 😰
🫰🫰👏👏📺🎬🫡 This is.
