“The Train”. Great Movie, no doubt about it! Burt Lancaster at his finest……. The story of Fine Art being hijacked from Paris, France to Germany during WWII. Based on a true story.
Note to any would be saboteurs. You must blow up 2-3 whole track lengths to derail a train. A single spot generally does not work as the train continues onto the next track. Held in place by the opposite track, the weight of the train and its momentum along the track.
It did in the movie, that is why they changed the track bolts, kids used to do silly things but not enough to derail but close, this is why they changed from the old bolt type to a c clip type.
@MrB1923 That doesnt make sense. If you look at how a trains wheel is made. they are not held in place by the track as so, they are resting on it. so if half of the track is missing, and one side gets off the rails, then how do you plan on getting back up?
He set the charge under one rail and the other side gets blown up! The most awesome thing is that the set-piece crashes are all absolutely authentic. 'Open the throttle & jump out.' The SNCF gave the film company obsolete rolling stock & locomotives they could destroy if required and a disused branch line. I believe they were the last deliberate locomotive crashes rather than using models. The film company had one camera destroyed, but it was set off by remote. Nobody got squished. Imagine a railroad giving a movie director carte-blanche to destroy stuff today.
At the time the SNCF had a good few old steam engines awaiting scrapping, so they could do that. No preservation society now would let them smash valuable artefacts in that manner - hence the dummy engine in the new Tom Hanks film. The Fugitive was a little different; an almost worthless old locomotive could be destroyed - so worthless in fact that I believe it is still lying where it fell to this day! The Train is a terrific, if ultimately sad film. Have you seen 'Battaille du Rail', which is actually even more authentic, and in some ways inspired 'The Train' - many of the cheminot seen acting in the film had possibly been doing it for real only a few months earlier......
@@MrdoctileAnd the intro the TV series The fugitive l remember a Lionel like model train was used in that derailment. I never saw wheel trucks bouncing up and down on the tracks so fast. They should have added more weight on those wheels to prevent it from bouncing so much where you new was a model.. thanks again for the clip take care and happy holidays and best wishes for better New Year
@@johndavies9270 dummy engine in the tom hanks film? Did you perhaps mean tom cruise? cause i haven't seen or heard of a movie with tom hanks in it that has a train crash lol
I’ve read that on the DVD commentary, John Frankenheimer said that Lancaster learned how to run a locomotive, make a poured Babbitt bearing (when he repairs the bearing that Papa Boule burns out by blocking an oil line with a Franc piece), and emplace and fire the plastic explosive that we see in this scene.
If you are wondering why he's limping - Burt Lancaster accidentally hurt his ankle playing golf during production and had to carry the injury into the later scenes.
@mcfrogging it's not. When wheels loose traction they almost don't do anything anymore. It's better to try to brake on the edge of not-skitting. On a boat it's true that putting the transmission in reverse will stop a boat quicker, but on wheels it isn't.
Reversing a locomotive was the line of last resort for stopping a train, particularly if moving fast. You ran a very good risk of smashing the valve gear linkage, and, in earlier days, losing any braking power at all. I shuddered for poor Sierra No 3 when Alan Hales did that kind of stop in 'Casey Jones' - hopefully they only did it once, and repeated the film!
@@johndavies9270 I watched a video of 2 Australian 38 class locos climbing a bank out of Wollongong. It has very steep hills. They were double heading it was amazing to watch the drivers cut power so quickly when the wheels started spinning . It was real hard work. They carried a lot of coal up that line, & it’s does get very wet.
burt lancaster did all his own stunts in this movie he was also a stunt double for another actor in this movie . he is the guy who rolls of the roof in the train yard when the air raid siren is going off . there are no more actors like burt lancaster none even close
Well not really. The fact that the brakes, sand, and reverse wheel slip were being used it is quite possible. When they show the top of the train it seems to be about 15 miles an hour at the least.
Hi! may I use your clip on my channel? there will be links to your channel in the description and on the clip itself. This will help increase the views of your clips. Thanks!
after him search the woods. wait. Colonel while they search the woods, labiche would blow another section of the track and another and another. Do you suggest we stop and let him run free? He could've blown up the engine. The hostages you put aboard prevented that. I can have this repaired in less than an hour. Keep Labiche away from the tracks for the next 4-5 miles until we reach Monterail then we can leave him behind. Labiche or the train, which do you want Colonel?
Quite true. The engines demolished were old superannuated stock. The marshalling yard that was 'bombed' was scheduled for demolition to make way for a more modern facility.
Soldiers are trained at the last days of their service for this and bridge demolition while waiting for the final discharge order so that they can do this if they return to active status in wartime.
Actually, it would be easier & cheaper to just derail a train rather than blowing it up. All you have to do is pull a few dozen rail spikes or clips. Beyond a crowbar, no special tools needed. If done on a curve in the track, the resulting damage to a fairly fast moving train would be considerable.
they were people who were innocents but forced to work for the Nazi's they called them collaborators basically slaves and they knew that resistance wouldn't hurt them.

Easily, you would have to understand the background of France in WW11 to understand it . The Colonel was played superbly .

Not needed but 10 charges under 10 sleepers on a bend will do the job.

The Season 1 Didint't Use This Brake Sound Actually.. It Was Only use in S5 - S6

a railwayman doesn't need in-depth training on how to wreck trains...if anything, he trained other people. and you can learn explosives from a Manuel.
