- So in 2013, I cut a hole in the bed of my truck for a fuel pump access hatch. That video is what put me on the path to do more truck DIYs. So here we are in 2019, improving that design!

This is a 1995 XL 8ft bed with dual fuel tanks.
So in order to be directly over the pump (there is some slight variation truck to truck), I measured 10 inches from the inside of the back bed wall. Then I measured 26 inches over from the side of the bed just as it begins to curve up from the bed floor. Otherwise, just take a look under the bed and locate your pump. You can hammer a dent in the underside of the bed over the pump as a locator mark.

This is a very common practice on Broncos... They often have 35-40 gallon tanks.

I had an escape (small suv) and it came from the factory with an access panel under the back seat, where the tank was. The pump did go bad and it took me 15 min's to change it

I've done this on a couple of rusty old s10's, far easier than fighting rusty tank straps and bolts.

I had my pump quit in upstate NY January. We got towed to the nearest autozone, bought the couple tools that I didnt have and pulled the bed to erplace the pump in the dark in 1ft of snow during a storm and the delay totalled 3hrs, just in time for us to hit the bar for late dinner before ice fishing the next morning LOL.
Now that I have an autozone sending unit, Im weary that SOMEday it could happen again. I already anti siezed the bed bolts since they SUCKED roadside, but am debating this hatch door.
My one pointer for icebelt folks, add a seal to the hatch door. $4 door/window seal foam tape.

Damn that’s quite the ordeal! You would definitely benefit from having a hatch like this.
That's an old but proven trick (custom bed builders take note and add one before ya need it, especially on work trucks where downtime sux!. I used my 6" angle grinder with cutting disks for most of the hole in my K1500. Another VERY useful trick is to remove your bed bolts when you get a truck then slather them with GOOD anti-seize like Jet Lube copper (not the watery cheap shite at the auto stores). I did my F150 in 2004 and that came in handy this year (2021) when removing the bolts was a breeze. If you work on your own vehicles have a fat can of anti-seize (and some red gel Loctite, which is also anti-seize because it seals out moisture). I've removed exhaust bolts I installed thirty years ago with no problem because I always anti-seize those. Dielectric grease does the same for electrical connections.
It sure is! That hatch as saved me so much time with other related repairs.

Here's the best advice after you have access to your pump through the hatch... Carry a spare pump... Just like a spare tire... You can find most pumps on eBay for less than 20 bucks... It can save you thousands and tow jobs and dealer bamboozles, carry on men

I don't know if anyone has tried this yet but I'd recommend trying an air nibbler to cut the hole in the future! Then you wouldn't have to worry about cutting lines or stray sparks. I haven't done this before though, so if anyone could let me know if this works that would be great

Absolutely! I've always wondered how why they didn't put an access panel they could if done a nice job from the factory. I've seen my neighbor pull the bed and I've dropped gas tanks before no fun. I'm glad a panevis available to put over the hole.

Yeah dropping the tanks isn’t fun. I dropped the front tank and fixed the float for the fuel pump. The pump died several months later. That’s when I cut the hole in the bed to access the pump. Then that tank leaked and I had to drop it again and replace it.
I’ve also replaced the rear tank too.

This is a good idea, however one problem would be moisture getting inside and getting down onto your fuel tank. I don’t think that would be a major issue if you could seal it around the edges a little bit. Also putting a heavy duty cargo liner, or what we did was to put a gorilla liner in the back which is about 3/4 of an inch. It’s custom and it really protects that hatch. Also, so you could definitely throw bricks on top of that and not worry about it. Again my only problem is moisture. I would spray some clearcoat sealer around the edges to keep it from keep it from rusting. We did this modification to a 2003 Chevrolet suburban. Worked out great.

Very true! For years a had a plastic bed liner that kept water from reaching the hatch. Now I have a tonneau cover which does the same. The hatch is painted and raptor lined now.

your joking right. moisture on top of the tank is not a issue. there is nothing sealing the top of the tank from the factory.
All the mighty early 90 model GMC Z71 should be Silverados to I like this this is my fifth pump at$270,000 MI. The 2005 f150 is getting its first pump today at 280,000... Truck manufacturers are all about supporting the dealer... Not the consumer... Hint. Spare pump, just like a spare tire... It can save you thousands... Carry on men

Is that the front or back of truck.Whats the mesurements from where? We cant see rhe whole bed to see where to cut!
I am trying to replace my fuel lines from the fuel rails on the engine. It looks like it uses push lock connectors from the Fuel Rail to a test point box that has four connections. Note I think it is test point box or a junction box. Does anyone know what this component does.

Other than accidentally cutting a fuel line is their any risk of using an angle grinder, Im a bit worried of sparks and gas vapors. This is way better than removing the bed but not as safe.
David Garcia So I slide a piece of drywall between the tank and the bed to prevent the angle grinder from cutting anything delicate. It also prevented the sparks from touching anything fuel related. You could also use a piece of carpet or layers of cardboard.

I just wet a piece of cardboard ( ok, it was a pizza box) and slid it up there. Also used an angle grinder with a metal cutoff blade. Just got my repair panel and am about to head out and cut it down to size and bolt it on

Just replaced a 22 year old DELPHI with another DELPHI last night. Not the cheapest but If you can find one for your vehicle it’s the only way to go. Set it and forget it

Good question! If I remember correctly, I think it 10”x10” but honestly you can make it any size you want. The first time I made it, it was small and I enlarged it for this video.
Great Video. Why trucks dont come this way is just unbelievable to me (copied from @chaosmagusgod). If the truck manufacturers would ask the people "what would y'all like us to add", the truck world would be a much better place. Oh well, it's not. I heard some of the newer GMC trucks have them (IDK). Who wants to remove the truck bed or deal with dropping the gas tank. Again, great video and I have ordered all the stuff to modify my chevy silverado truck bed.

I don’t know who the testers/user group’s manufacturers listen too, but yes vehicles would be so much better if end user input was considered in the design phase.
What tool did you use to cut through the bed of the truck?
I used an angle grinder with a thin carbon cutting disk/metal cutting blade. I slid a piece of drywall between the tank and bed for protection. This second time around, I used a piece of wood.

I normally would video the cutting but I have melted a camera lens with the sparks. I do have another video on how to use a rivet nut tool though.

I would love to give you some exact dimensions. However, the size of the hole is up to you. Where exactly to cut the hole varies from truck to truck. I’ve come to the understanding that the fuel tanks can all be located at different spots front to back.
I don't know about the butt welding. It sounds like it would hurt.

I used an angle grinder with 4-1/2 carbon cutting wheel. You could use a sawzall with a very short blade too.

I don’t have any exact measurements. That’s because I found the tanks can be mounted in a variety of locations from the factory. Basically they can be a few inches off and still function properly.

How do you find the measurements to get to the actual spot you need to cut the hole
I mostly found it by “eyeballing” where the pump is located relative to the number of ridges in the bed. So I think I counted over 3 raised ridges and then measure I think 12-14 inches from the back wall of the bed. That gave me my center. Then I measure out from there while trying to avoid the bed supports underneath. These few tanks can shift a bit. So you will definitely have to measure it your truck to get a more accurate location. Now if you buy a bed patch panel like I did for this hatch, you can always cut an “exploratory” hole to see how far off you are from the pump.
Wow Dude, that is quite a hack job. Couldn't get a new ring to secure the fuel pump in ? All those sheet metal screws jammed into the tank will be a problem with water ingress.
That’s not a hack job that’s how the tank is designed. The plastic is thicker and reinforced for those screws.
I wasn’t the design but at the end of the day, it works flawlessly.

Thanks for sharing-thumbs up. However, unless someone uses it as a race truck that constantly requires swapping stuff, you're better off leaving that the way it is, especially if you use the bed alot. There's no reason why your new pump/tank setup shoul'dnt last another 100k miles.

Unless you own a 2001 Silverado. I've put one in my blue '01 and my green '01 just got it's third. I cut the bed and decided to create an oversized access panel. Searched UA-cam and found this video for any tips and looks like what I had planned except for the rivet screws which I'll be looking into.
Just doing it one time saves a ton of money and gas and extra parts and everything else being underneath a truck on a lift its no biggie

Good mod update; I am like you in that with my 1975 Dodge D100, I am not worried about the aesthetics of the bed and prefer functionality over appearance and worse case scenario, the mod is cheap insurance and peace of mind for quick checks of the fuel tank components.

Doesn't the 1975 have a carb? The pump isn't in the tank.
@@JeffTheHokie Yes, mechanical pump is on side of engine, but the sending unit is still in the tank. So on my ‘75 Dodge, I have to either lift one side of the bed to get to it or I have to drop the tank to pull sending unit out.

I wonder if you could have just screwed the big one onto the little one, so that it just folded up with the little one
u would have to line it up just right and probably cut some off the side with the hinges, but then you could just lift both up together, or take the old one off and put new one on, but have it bigger than old one, so it still does the overlapping you want. I don't know much about this stuff, so sorry if this is dumb.
I could but I wanted a large hole. The other one was a bit tight to work in.

Dr. Timothy W. Curtis So I went searching through my past commons for the dimensions. If you want to be centered over the fuel pump, I measured 10 inches from the back wall of the bed and 26 inches over from the driver’s side of the bed right where the bed begins to curve up. Once you centered over the pump, you just cut out a 10” Square centered over your measurement. 🤙
Curious as to why your fuel pump is failing so much, multiple failure's back to back seems a little odd to me personally.
Justin Davis I’ve actually only had one failure on the original pump in the front tank. I bought the truck and one of the fuel tanks wasn’t reading for when it should’ve been. The original brass float had filled up with gasoline and sank to the bottom of the tank. I soldered the float closed and reinstalled it. That pump failed six months later. Other than that, I’ve had both tanks rust and leak, a leak from an oversized pump gasket, and a vent gasket leak was from me reusing the original torn gasket until I could get a replacement. The rear pump was replaced by the original owner.

What branch did you serve in? Seen you wear a shemahg on a few other videos and your boots look like the old ICBs.
Technically, I didn’t serve, but I wore a Navy uniform for 15 years with the USNSCC (US Naval Sea Cadet Corp). I adopted wearing a shemagh around 2007 for field opts and other related training. Over the years, I’ve worn at least a half dozen different brands of ICB in both tan and black leather. Those boots I’m wearing in the video are made by Palladium. They were the boots made for the French Foreign Legion after WWII. They aren’t regulation, so I used them for work, outdoors, etc.

What size that was I want do to front and back tanks
The steel bed panel is a standard size as far as I know. As far as the size of the hatch, I counted 5 ridges (long bumps/grooves in the panel) long and I think it’s around 10 inches wide. I left a 1 inch overlap on all sides.

Great video I just bought a short bladed saw to but into my 2001 Chevy Silverado. One question where can I go get a peace of metal like yours to put over the hole because the name u mention I don’t think the have a location in Houston tx. Maybe a pick a part lot I can cut some but I think they will get mad because now they can’t sell the truck bed as a whole .

Great idea 💡 but what do you do to get the debris and dirt or whatever inside the tank use a vaccum?
Thanks man!🤙 I’ve pulled a few fuel tanks and I’ve never found dirt or debris inside the tank itself. But with a hole this size, I don’t see why you couldn’t vacuum out the inside of the tank. You can easily vacuum the top of the pump off.

Well in my case I suspect my brother put something inside my tank. Because it was running fine and I had a verbal discussion with him and he had been around near my truck mowing my neighbors yard so I'm guessing he put something inside LoL 🤣

Good job. What year F150 did you do it on and what were the measurements to get the hatch in the right place. I have the 2005 fx4 ext cab.
This is a 1995 F150 regular cab long bed. As for the measurements, I figured mine out by looking under the truck. All you need is the approximate area of the fuel pump. The hatch is typically larger than the top of the fuel pump.
Won't work on extended cab truck.

You can definitely kind a bed to get a patch from at the junkyard. The pump in the rear tank was replaced by the previous owner. So I don’t have an excess hatch for it.
Not sure it would matter but now everytime it rains the top of the yank will hold a puddle for a few days lol
Actually, my tank stays just as dry as before. Granted, I have a rubber bed mat over the hatch.

Why? You are probably going to replace a fuel pump only once in the life of the truck. Plus, you're probably going to destroy your resale value.
I’ve used this hatch now 9 times for repairs. I’d say it’s paid for itself. Not to mention there’s no rust from the cut.
Definitely not worried about resale value on this truck. Lol

I love your ideas and videos. I can say from experience both with my fix or repair dailys' , watching many diy videos, and engineering experience you would make your videos much better if you communicate where on the vehicle you are working. i.e . I could not tell where in the bed of the pickup you were putting the access hole. I thought you were at the back next to license plate. Over the rear tank. Take your time basically and look into ways to make your finished work look better. How would you make it look if you were a Ford engineer. You are awesome, just keep in mind look of final product and your videos COULD go viral. i.e. Lady Gaga would be no one if she hadn't started to wear steaks at her concerts instead of eating them. As for finish work, this truck is my daily driver. Often times to paint something correctly takes several days. So I’m usually only able to do so much. I typically refinish thinks off camera when I have a chance. If you watch my video and how to raptor line the bed of a truck. You will see everything get finished. 🤙
