Carolina Crown's Hornline: From Average to Awesome (2002-2013)

- Carolina Crown's Hornline is in the midst of a Dynasty - not placing lower than 2nd place in DCI Finals between 2011 - 2019.
How did they do it?
In 2003, Carolina Crown hired both Michael Klesch (brass aranger) and Matt Harloff (brass caption head).
In the video, all scores are out of 20 points. All scores are from DCI finals only.
The opener in 06 was the moment I realized Crown had just become a contender. It was all up from there. From that point on their brass became legend and people went to shows just to hear Crown's opening hit. Don't know how that dude continues to pump out amazing hornlines but Crown has a great recipe.
For me, I've always thought that their 2004 show set them up for greater success in the future. Their brass was pretty average imo, but I think doing "Bohemian Rhapsody" might have helped with recruiting and gaining notice...at least, that is when I began to take notice of them. They really stepped it up in 2005/2006 with the quality of their brass sound and shows , and then in 2007 they stepped it up slightly more. Every year after that they have been excellent.
2006 was my first year marching. I was with the Mandarins and had heard Blue Devils, SCV, etc from the side after we performed in Cali shows but never heard a drum Corp show up front in person yet, but when we made it to Texas and there were more corps performing I got to come back and watch the later corps and Carolina Crown went on and I will never forget that opener. Life changing moment
Well, if he leads Gods Hornline the good Lord must've given him something to create that masterclass with brass.
i marched in 06... i can tell you how... matt harloff demands nothing short of perfection. nail the technique and the volume will come... CROWN BRASS IS THE SLEDGEHAMMER THAT ALL OTHER BRASS LINES WILL BE SMASHED BY... cool story about the closer... during spring training, while doing a full runthrough... the sprinklers on the field came on at the very last hit of the show... it was freaking epic... our tour CD was titled summertime sprinkler fun... it was one of those moments you cant plan for, but man was it perfect
The crown 2012 closer has some of the most insane drill and brass I have ever seen/heard
2006 = 🤔 alright
2007 = I see you Crown
2008 = Oh damn
2009 = Welcome to being Contenders
2010 = Not going anywhere
2011 = Brass Dynasty Begins
2012 = Is this the year? Expectations
2013 = Championship. Perfection in Brass
I've always thought that if Crown had BD or SCV drums
you'd have a winner every year. I remember Crown from
it's infancy and man what a metamorphosis. (understatement)
I think they had something similar to SCV or BD drums in 2016 (Relentless)? I could be wrong about that
@@Spaciousbow3572 Nah it's the opposite, they scored 5/6th place in percussion in 2016. It's a shame too, there was only about a .6 spread from 3rd place to 1st place and with a slightly better drum line they easily could've taken silver or gold. They did win the captions for brass, color guard and visual though that year.
There was a time where crown had a drumline nearly as killer as their hornline and that was in 2009. Their hornline placed 1st and their drumline placed 2nd. Don't really know why they've never had their drumline score up to that level again.
Their Percussion was very good in 2009 getting 2nd. They’ve just recently gotten top tier again, placing 4th in 2017, 3rd in 2018, and 4th again in 2019. Although I’d argue 2019 should’ve been higher
@@prestonjones20013 Yeah their drumline has been evening out with the hornline but their 2009 drumline was absolutely insane. One of the most overlooked lines of the century
The first time I heard that 2013 opener I remember thinking "they clean that up, they win". And they did. Both. Bravo.
Even that ‘02 line felt fuller than some recent years’ bottom half of top 12 hornlines ngl. There was some sauce✨✨
Right, but technically not a Matt Harloff hornline. His first year was 2003.
Crown won their first brass trophy in 1991’. I know, I was a mellophone in that line. We have been very consistent in brass over our existence
First time I saw crown live was in 2008. That opening hit is legitimately one of the best opening hits of ALL time. My jaw couldn’t pick up off the ground the moment it started
I was on the 2008 mellophone line and it was just as much fun to perform as it was to hear. Loved the 2008 season, the corps was experiencing so much growth.
The final chord in 2012 what is the moment I realized no one can do any better because they sounded like a friggin pipe organ. Also my HS friend was the Drum Major
I know this probably won't hold water, but the olde pharte in me would love to see Crown on a set of matched Kanstul G Bugles and watch them tear the paint off the walls of the stadium. It would be epic. Harloff would make that happen.
Considering what I’ve heard about old DCI, yeah probably
I literally said the same exact thing tonight lol… I remember watching their first Finals appearance… It was my first year in DCI.
Possible. I marched BD on kanstul G.. and only a few corps could actually make G horns sound good while also tearing your face off. I sure miss G though lol
Although I haven't played g bugles many old heads I know have suggested that it wasn't per say the instrument making them louder compared to a Bb horn but disregard of tone, intunation, and clarity. Idk if that's true or not but wanted to ask
@@alexkeele9502Definitely no. G's just ring different and blow more freely. They had a different color that was truly unique and exciting to hear. They felt like "outdoor instruments." Bb's tend to be a bit stuffy and better suited to indoor venues. You can make terrible or great sounds on either.
Not only has the hornline been in the midst of a dynasty, but their visual program has grown by leaps and bounds over the same time period!
Oh damn this video is really new, i cant belive it, i thought originally i have no chance of finding new videos to carolina crown, cause im a big fan of them and im from Italy, but now is unfortunately corona time.. :D
A true hornline dynasty that doesn’t look to end any time soon 😎
Yessir 😀
Matt Harloff joined the staff in 03 as their caption head and has done amazing things sense with Klesch as their arranger.
2007 was the year I knew Crown would be a medal corps the following years.
The fact that crown just kept getting better
I remember watching them in Louisville in 2003, and could tell there was just something different. Show design, talent level, it was fun to watch.
2008 was the year they fully hit their stride. And it showed
Nothing but respect for that hornline and corps as a whole. Just incredible what they can do!
Carolina Crown's excellence in brass did not begin with Mr. Harloff, nor will it likely end with him.
Well, I hope he stays at Crown! As a Blue Devil and Crown fan, I need Crowns staff to grow together just like the blue devils did. I'm ready for them to dominate.
They played Barber in 02 and the next year the drum major from 93 Star shows up. The rest is history.
not just matt... he brought his brother ben with him... when star became brass theater, ben was the trumpet soloist that came down from the ceiling in a chair. true story, the man can also belch in tune and on cue too... the little things you learn on tour
Yeah, the 02 show was a bit dull imo. But doesnt mean the hornline was average. We were actually good. But I mean....I only marched it. Who am I to say otherwise right? Thanks man.
And in the next competitive season, 2022, they scored 19.8 on finals night for 1st place.
And then scored a 19.9 in brass the very next year at finals, 2023.
I remember when I was in high school 2002-06 our band director saying crown was an improving corps to try out for that was fairly close to home.
7:49 LMAO
How in the world did a 19.2 in 2007 score 7th in brass that’s crazy
ok I know this is a brass video but WHAT WAS THAT RIFLE TOSS 13:46
Herbert Washington...DCI's first anti-aircraft gun...now the color guard guy with Boston. Two Zingali awards so he i just as good a teacher as performer would be my guess. Crown should never have let him go.
Oops, three...he won one with Crown in 2016.
@@danagiles5100 oh my gosh. Thank you. I remember seeing him in crown shows those years and was always amazed of his power and performance. I mean, dudes a absolute beast, its ridiculous.
@@danagiles5100 well shit, no wonder why boston crusaders guard is just on an whole other level. Their design, abilities, everything. It makes so much sense now. They just killed it, I mean killed it this year.
8 of the last 13 jim ott awards... second only to the blue devils in total captions won at DCI world finals... if they could get the battery to be anywhere close to the brassline, they would smash BD records with ease
I know im like years late, but could you possibly show the placements of their brass each year?
they were never average, even from the start
What show is featured at the end when the more current scores are shown?
That’s part of their 2010 show titled a second chance with the cream and orange uniform
Buy the staff, the talent will follow. 20 minute video summed up for you.
I got jumpscared when 2010 came up because I had played Danzon before
Which show is the ending slide audio from?
e=mc²
ending slide audio is from 2010, source material is Arturo Marquez's "Danzon No. 2"
What year did crown make the jump to Div. I
2034
03 sounded out of tune compared to the others
couldve sworn they had a 19.8 in 2017? or am i mistaken
They received a 19.8 in Prelims and Semifinals but in finals they received a 19.6.
I used finals scoring to stay consistent
@@Sforzando_DCI ah ok
2016 also scored a 19.6 in brass at finals. 2016 and 17 should have been 19.8 if you asked me
2002 looks like a rendering
2014 is pretty good if the Blue Devils didn’t just wipe everyone else off though.
The thing about Crown's brass that year is that it didn't even fall off. Crown was 2nd in brass with a 19.7 to BD's 19.8
2:32
For me it’s crown ‘05 & ‘06
06 was a fun show... at least from the field it was...
Man, what a backhanded headline. Not sure I'd go around calling any world-class DCI lines mediocre, you know they won a number of brass titles in Div II right? Looks like somebody has a mediocre number of subscribers.
Maybe I’m out of the loop, but I see no mention of the word “mediocre”. I do see “average” however, which if we’re discussing score, is an appropriate assessment. And btw this channel has more subscribers than you do... so cool your jets pal.
@@sarredjozzi9281 You are out of the loop. He edited the title based on feedback this received in Reddit. He was a real gentleman about it and only meant well. I am not a channel, so you comparison is idiotic.
@@patricksloan4324 Ahh ok. Thank you for informing me. I am glad to see the owner of the video is respectful and can take criticism from the reddit overlords. If only you had meant as well as the owner did, and behaved like a gentleman... you know... instead of pointing out his number of subscribers, which is something little kids do. And if he only meant well, why does your original comment exist?
@@sarredjozzi9281 Because I interacted with him after the fact, and your erroneous conflation of my maturity with my commentary, misses the point completely, that the owner really isn't in a place to slap labels like that on anything. But I guess we all have to armchair quarterback. I'll conclude with that as I don't want to poorly represent my actual drum corps. But go ahead, keep trying to mediate something you don't know anything about.
Patrick over here knows how to use big words
I believe the mediocre comment, if it were coming from Harloff. That guy is verbally abusive to a degree that it surprises me he's still on staff.
Details?
Huh? context please?
But he wins so your point is
@@jbone8315 winning isn't an excuse to be abusive
@@ssrushforth My parent whipped my butt and I came out great, no complaints. Now if physical harm is done thats a problem but I'm sure it's not. Our society has become sooo soft.
