I've been using a bullet journal for almost two years and have been incorporating diary entries for a while. It has been especially helpful in keeping notes about therapy sessions and exploring what my therapist and I discussed and how I incorporate it into my life. I have a tendency to watch the art journal/bullet journal videos and stress out over how "ugly" my journal is compared to theirs. Whenever that gets in the way I always return to your videos to remind myself that simplicity and organization are also beautiful and keeps out the clutter that adds stress for me. I still watch the art journal videos to appreciate how they create their works of art, but I watch these to remind myself what bullet journaling is really about for me. Thanks, Ryder!
floralnori omg I’ve been stressed by watching the artistic ones too! This is actually The first time I’ll be Attempting the bullet journal, but I’ve been using regular journaling for quite some time to help me with there be as well! My problem is that something will happen to me on Monday that triggers me or heightens me in someway but by the time I get to therapy on Friday I can’t remember it or I don’t have the words to talk about it so by journaling it’s helped me be more productive in therapy. But now I want to start analyzing how sleep and my moods and all that stuff kind of work together as well as keeping a place for things that trigger me and how I can work on them like housecleaning which I said in my comment above (one of my biggest nemesis when I’m depressed)! I’m so happy to hear that the system works for you it just makes me that much more excited to get going when my journal gets here
but its not ugly!
its much easier to read and also easier to use. complicated layouts just ruin the freedom we have with this basic style.
i add stickers and washi tape into the empty spaces at the end of the month :D

@@Dreblueskies comparison trap? dont you like your bujo? mine doesnt look like any of the fancy youtubers, but i like it much better because its mine! i cant even start to compare it with others. make yours more individual and do your own thing.
I relate to these feelings so much. Once I started watching other channels or looking at spreads on Instagram, I actually stopped journaling entirely for 3 months! I felt so inadequate. Nothing I made would ever be “Instagram-worthy”. But, like you, I came back to his videos and shifted my focus on the true purpose of why I want to journal in the first place. I’ve returned to much more minimal layouts and I have actually enjoyed them so much more. The clean lines and colors made it *look* more organized, which in turn made me *feel* more organized every time I flipped through. I still enjoy looking at the creative spreads but I know that that’s not the intention I’m going for.

@@dilsdoes hrs a type 4 in the energy profiling system. Type 4 people ( there are four types total of energy expressed in people and nature) have still, bold, clear, and stunning qualities about them. Their facial features are more symmetric than the other types. The are genuinely calm and clear. And he is dressing in the colors and glasses style that match his type 4 energy. Hm, I get what you’re saying. IMO, he’s probably smiling to make the video visually engaging; but I guess his efforts didn’t really appeal to you 😅. It does look a little forced. Imagine him not smiling while talking. That’ll make the video seem more like a school lecture than an informative speech about his passion (writing). Either way, what’s there to hide in a video about journaling? 😊

I have been journaling for more than 50 years...what started as a class project when I was a sophomore in high school has helped me in so many ways to deal with life......and I tell anyone who asks why I still do it....because it has become almost as essential to and for me as breathing,eating,sleeping.......and coping with my redheaded temperment ......
Very helpful. I had a brain injury that effected my memory and using a journal has helped. My doctors thought I would have suffered from Alzheimer's early in my 20's but I'm still going strong.

This channel is a gold mine to me. I've started journaling a while ago but over time I felt very unsatisfied when I wrote because I always had the feeling that my journals lack some sort of structure. My journal was very unorganized and the purpose of every page was kind of random. This video was kind of what I was searching for
I've been using cursive writing to distinguish my diary-type entries from my to-do-type entries. Most of my cursive entries are pretty small, though. I haven't given myself over to those thoughts much in my bullet journal yet. But I will give this a try!

Here in Germany we have to write a big essay in grade 12 which influences the final grade significantly, it’s called „housework“.
I wrote mine in artclasses and chose „bullet journalling after Ryder Carroll- the most efficient way to organize as a student?“ as my topic and got 15 points😍☺️ so thanks a lot Ryder ☺️😂 it was cool that this exercise (normally something that brings every student to the end😅) was something fun👍🏼😊
I started bullet journaling in my composition notebooks since the age of thirteen in this very exact way journal entries and tasks, events, appointments, etc. I had no idea it was called bullet journaling.
Marianne I concur. At the age of 13 I had no idea my way of jotted down my own day to day organization in my composition notebook had a name to it, Lol it’s great to know this now. It’s amazing. I love the bullet journal method. ❤️😁
Yes, I have been doing something similar for years and years in a composition book. But it has been fun for me to transition to his more organized way of doing it. I am having fun learning how to use a dot grid notebook. It is challenging after only using lined paper.
Before the preprinted day planner explosion in the late '70s-'80s, people used simple pocket calendars and notebooks with brief narrative statements and bullets in their journals for decades. Military leaders use brief narratives and bullets in reports which they adopted into their person diary and planning systems. I have no problem crediting Ryder Carrol for his version of the bullet journal but it's a variation of a concept that's been in use since man first put pen to paper.
I have a regular longterm diary and keep my dream journal in the back, i just flip to the end and turn the book over, so I write towards the first pages. That might be helpful if you have longer entries you want to write about certain topics while keeping your bullet journal section in the front neat and organized. That makes finding important spreads more easily and people could peek in without discovering telling headlines about your personal life :)

This is so timely! I got gifted The Artist's Way for my birthday last month and I have been using my Bullet Journal to do my morning pages and task essays. I find it works better for me than short-form journaling. I had almost given up bullet journalling because it was turning into just a to-do list that gave me anxiety. I switched instead to capturing anything remarkable about my day or something new I learnt that day. Now I restrict my task list to just my monthly log and use my daily log to long form my thoughts at that point of time. I then use the calendar on my monthly log page to fill in highlights of the month like you suggested in one of your tutorial videos. So far, this is working great for me. But, I kind of felt like I was cheating with the Bullet Journaling system. It is a relief to know that the system is flexible enough to allow the liberties I have already taken.

Yes!! I’ve been journalling in my Daily Logs for a long time, which helps to just brain dump anxious thoughts. This is so important to me, and differentiates both the need for my bu-jo, and what tasks I can manage electronically - both are so important for my every day. Those starting bullet journalling, don’t plan ahead in your bullet journals. You need to keep the next pages empty, for random thoughts and discussions in your head, lists, plans. Some days you may have only your quick form list to write, some days you need to unload anxieties.

This is some mind reading. I just asked Helen Colebrook about this last night! My one hesitation is that I like to carry my journal with me everywhere. I get anxious about losing a journal with my personal thoughts or mental health issues inside. It has kept me from taking my journal with me and then later wishing I had it. I may use this method but keep a separate journal for elaborating on those points that need unpacking.
I think it's really important to include ALL of our lives in the same place--not a pad for lists, a journal for thoughts, etc. So I have already been incorporating everything from my daily mundane activities, to what I am learning, and what I am thinking about. The plus sign is a great idea! Thank you for the BuJo method!
ikr. since i started bujoing over a year ago i dont use any additional paper anymore.
I use two columns, thin outer and larger inner. The large inner column gets all the normal bujo stuff, the outer I use to briefly expand upon or flag items for further development (among other things).
Adding a page number to journal entries is definitely a game-changer for me! I also used the plus symbols for journal entries in a much stressful way. I felt like I had to make the journal entry immediately or could only make one for the entire day. This makes a lot more sense because I can step away from the notes I want to expand on/journal about and come back to the ones that are the most distracting /difficult.

I love bullet journaling and have always combined it with long form journaling and art journaling to bring my dream of ‘one book to rule them all’ to life. Lists, notes, art, doodles and diary all in one place. It’s a mess, sort of organised chaos, and nothing like the pretty things on Instagram. But it’s me. I have never thought to use my notes to inspire my writing as prompts though so will be adding this tool to my bullet journal experience. Thank you Ryder, simple and inspiring as always.

But I find it hard to bring along different notebooks. and realized that I most of the time end up using my bujo/planner as "journal". :D most bujo posted aren't in this style so I'm very happy I finally saw this one :) thank you!
The way you add journal entries is similar to how I incorporate extra thoughts/notes to self. Before, I used to keep personal journalings in a separate notebook, but lately I've been enjoying the convenience of keeping everything combined in one book. Thank you for sharing more of your techniques!

I started bullet journaling in march fell away but plan to start anew in the new year. I want to finish your book, I kept lending it out to people who needed your system and never finished it myself. what I'm thinking is keeping 3 journals: Daily Log (basic standard bullet jounal), faith journal (to keep track of bible reading, sermon notes, prayer requests, etc), and a Reflections book (a more standard long form journal/diary).
This is what I’m actually starting journaling for! I wanted a way to actually do my mental health journaling which I bring to therapy with me... but also look at tracking things like my anxiety/depression, sleep, moods, etc, While also looking at different things that trigger my anxiety and learning how to manage them better like housecleaning and the way I talk to myself my inner dialogue… I’ve been wondering how I’m going to tackle the actual daily journaling part, so this is EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!!!!! I don’t have a need for traditional bullet journaling because I don’t have a job and I don’t have kids I have to keep track of so I’m strictly going to be doing mental health and I’m really really really really excited about it

Good for you Anne, that's great you're using the journal how it best works for you instead of treating Ryder's suggestions as set-in-stone inflexible dogma. Also, most of the world uses the checkmark as a completed task and the "X" as a deleted task in whatever method they use.

2 main take aways for me
• I have been immediately putting a page number next to a + even though often times I don’t feel like writing the longform journal part in the moment. I just know that I need to expand on the thought at some point. Now I realize I can come back and find the pluses and then do the longform entry
• I never thought of doing the long form below on the daily log, good idea

I had struggled with journaling, but now after listening to "the bullet journal method" audio book and got my first leuchtturm bullet journal, I have to say, this is genius. Bujo will for sure be a part of my life for the coming years and hopefully for the rest of my life. I love how you make everything so minimal and simple. It is so calming, yet satisfying. Yes, it's like you were reading my mind, too! Horizontal lines are for journaling! Get the thoughts out, and move on, or return to it later with greater clarity. And more joy!
This is cool about the bullet journal system. It is a free canvas for us to fill in. Surprisingly I started this technique, 3 months ago. I am struggling to cope with my mental health and I thought about incorporating it in my bujo. Instead of writing my feelings and thoughts as a note, i write the time I am writing and start the narrative.

I love this idea! I also like how clean the pages look with simple M.D.W format, though I use R for Thursday and U for Sunday so that if I turn to a random day, I can distinguish Tues/Thurs or Sat/Sun. :-) When I was in college, that's how the schedules were lettered. If it was a Tuesday/Thursday class, they had it abbreviated as T/R.

Wow, this is powerful. Thank you so much for sharing. I've been basically keeping a dairy and a bujo, and I just never thought about combining them, even though I didn't like having two separate books. I have BPD (which really should be renamed to emotion dysregulation disorder), and I'm learning to be mindful to be more aware of my own emotions (instead of just being eaten alive by them) which makes long-form journaling to work through emotions is a very important tool for me. Using the - and + thing sounds like pure genius, I can't wait to give it a try. This might end up being a vital tool in my recovery and maintenance post-treatment, so again just thnk you so much for sharing this tip.

Ryder, with someone who also dances merrily with ADD (I don't consider it suffering), I recently discovered why I never stuck with the 'pretty layout' versions of BuJo'ing. It was too time-consuming, and IT WAS WRONG! I have watched your videos before, but for some reason, watching it today, the whole thing just clicked for me, like a key in a lock. I have also started moving some of my long-form journaling back to handwriting. (I leave my bitch sessions and complaints for the digital journals). This video was the bow 🎀 on the box 🎁, the cherry🍒 on top🍨, the pot at the rainbow's 🌈 end! It combines the true method of bullet journaling with long form. It's the best of both worlds, and now the whole process makes sense.
By the way, I love how mindful you are about speaking slowly, articulately, and calmly. I know having ADD/ADHD, this is a skill that must be learned and mastered intentionally. I struggle with this, and you are an inspiration that I, too, can learn to speak so masterfully.
I'm preparing to enter a new journal in January and had just this morning decided to keep my journal in a separate book (as I'm doing now), now I'll reevaluate that. Thank you for the insight.

I've been long-form journaling since before I started bullet journaling so for me it was the other way around. I incorporated bullet journaling into my long-form journaling by keeping them on separate pages. When the page I'm bullet journaling on runs out I go to the next blank page and when the page I'm long-form journaling on runs out I do the same. Since the long-form journaling is just a wall of text I can easily tell it apart from everything else. Thus I keep the two forms of journaling apart but roughly keep the timeline together in that I don't have to turn many pages to find the corresponding date. Since I use my long-form journaling mostly as a braindump or to write plot ideas for fiction I have no need to keep the two forms of journaling on the same page wich also keep my bullet journaling tidy (as I migrate my tasks weekly instead of daily). The best part about it is that I need only one notebook and the clutter, both in my mind and on my desk, has cleared a bit. So, this also beame a wall of text, but I love this system so much and the bullet journal way of planning has really helped me, especially when it comes to focus and not worrying so much about the future. (I let the future log do that for me.) Thank you for sharing this system with the world!
Linnéa Hådén Wow, the idea of keeping the traditional daily log and long form journaling on separate pages is such a great idea I had never considered. I like Ryder’s method for combining longer entries into the rapid log but when I tried it in the past I just hated seeing the blocks of text mixed in with the bulleted items. I’ll have to try this or give Ryders method another chance.

I use a Franklin Planner and I use a combination of brief narrative and bullet journaling; I don't have the patience to draw all those calendars and charts. I'll use a brief narrative alone or with supporting bullets if necessary it all depends on the subject or I'll just use standalone bullets if that's all I need. I see no need to get worked-up over a specific way to use a system. Bottom line is to use it how it best suits your needs and if you find it easier and better to modify the original concept then do it and you'll be much more productive and fell better for it.

This is SO good! I'm so sad that your original idea gets lost in all these super creative bujos on yt. I get lost in it as well, but generally I love to journal and I have been journaling since I was about 12 years old and this video was a real light bulb for me. Thanks so much
