Been using Custom IEM's for almost a decade now live as a broadcast engineer/musician/singer and in the studio. Hard to go back even to over the ear headphones after using them for so long. Really enjoy the ability not having to blast my mix really loud when tracking.
ME as a session drummer and doing 10 shows every day with a band, talkback, cues, Showcaller and my voice... Can not describe how grateful I am for using Custom IEMS, REALLY saved my life... My ears are so healthy (doing check ups every 5 months) It is THE BEST gift you can give yourself
Engineering is great with iems, more people need to get into it. Taking your control room wherever you go is sooooo amazing.
I use 64 audio AT6's and it is hands down the best piece of gear I've ever bought! Way better than my DW kits, cymbals, or studio gear! I wish I could go back in time and get them when I started 20+ years ago. Nothing is more important than saving your hearing and unfortunately most people don't realize this until you have damage done.
Great video of the whole experience!
I've been using Westone UM2 IEM since 2009 for music listening and while playing Bass, great economic-friendly choice with nice full range sound for me
I was just watching your old video and I got this notification 😁😁😁btw love your videos❤❤❤
I got a pair of In ears without the mold and really love the quality of the sound. Two things I loved about them was nothing heavy weighing on my head and as you said doing vocals on them is a whole other trip. 1st there is no headphone bleed at all, and 2nd you can hear your tone so clear its easier to find the note. Now since I using a universal ear foam my right ear after a few hours starts to hurt in a physical way ( not ear fatigue, but more pressure against the wall of the ear). I really just need to fork out the money and get molds done at one point. But this has been a great tool in my studio. And the most important thing about in ears.... I doesn't mess up your hair!
I think my UE11s are coming up on their 9th year now… and I’m still in love with them, same as I was in shock on day 1.
One of my best investments when it comes to personal gear 🤘🏼🖤
Awesome To learn from Brother Andrew how to use the IN-ear Monitors
I’ll be ordering my Ne4’s from FIR audio later this week! Cannot wait
I'm using the Shure 215 item since 10 years now on stage. It's the cheapest model but it's an another world.. And I use them in studio too. It's a better isolation the headphones. I'm thinking about upgrading it now.... :D
Been using IEM’s live and in the studio for over a decade. I have JH13’s and Westone ES30. I love them for live monitor mixing, performance and studio tracking but nothing beats my Focal Clear MG’s for mixing.
Never had customs, always used Shure SE series IEMs, but once I can afford customs, I will get a pair. Used custom molded ear plugs for several years, those were awesome as well.
Hey from Jamaica 🇯🇲
I use MUCH cheaper Shure SE425 with the triple flange buds, can't say I love them totally, but when I get the right seal, they are awesome. Mostly on drums, but when I am singing and playing, they are great too.
I have been using IEMs for the past 23 years. About 13 years ago, I got custom molded (JH Audio) IEMs. Out of all the gear that I have ever bought in my time as a studio owner or performing drummer, these are (by far) the best investment I have made. The biggest tip I can provide - keep a pack of QTips with your IEMS, and clean your ears ever time! It's shocking how easy it is to get wax down in the sound holes.
Very cool love them
I'm glad you made this video! While I have never used in-ear monitors in the studio or live, I rely on a pair of moulded earplugs for working with bands in a studio context and performing live. My biggest struggle over the last few years is getting a snug fit in a new pair of earplugs or IEMs. I'm wondering what your experience was like with your ear impressions, and if significant alterations were necessary by Fir Audio once you realized the fit wasn't perfect? Would you recommend working with Fir Audio for someone who has two very strangely shaped ear canals?
Yes...exclusivly IEM's as I play.a silent stage. It really helps to have a room mic in the mix to blend in.
Would have loved to hear more of your thoughts on how they actually sound.
I'm currently saving up to get some 64 Audio A18t's and I would love to get some other insights of different brands
Fir audio is better the one in the video is better than the A18ts it’s Xenon6 or you can get Radon 6 form the same company essentially the guys at Fir audio were the inventive brains at 64 audio then they left and started Fir audio trust me they know what they doing.
most defiitley love my in ears! ive got some shure SE215's and i got them used from my dad but they still sound amazing if youre not using the cable that comes with them.
Ive owned both 64 audio and fir.. universal sounds different than custom imo and mostly everybody’s opinion but u will get used to custom u will love them
Tried a non custom fit Shure pair and it was so bad I couldn’t imagine ever using a pair. Fine until I start singing then it’s madness. 😂 This has me interested again tho thx Andrew!
Glad you like the IEMs. I've been using the Ultimate Ears Pro Custom fit IEMs for years - they make everything sound clear and are far safer for my ears. I am curious though, The FIR IEMs sound great for the listener, but I thought they deliberately leaked air (as a part of how they work) into the microphone and were not great for studio work as a result - sort of like open back headphones. Great for live concerts and may even sound better in an isolated A - B test, but not great for close mike and booth studio work. What is your experience? Am I wrong? Thanks for the fun video.
Randy and Tanya! Good people!
I'm starting my journey into home recording and thinking about using these instead of monitoring headphones. One of the biggest questions I was wondering is if there's any more/less audio bleed picked up by the microphones compared to closed headphones?
Would you ever use/have you yet used IEMs when mixing as well? I’ve been a recent convert to IEMs (and monitoring in general) for non-classical projects after most of my life in orchestras, and they’ve been life-changing.
Hi. I have a 64audio 8N Custom IEM’s. Have you heard about this company? They make great IME’s. John Mayer also uses their monitors, on their website they have a picture of Mayer.
64 audio and Fir audio is the same people they are all brothers some left and started Fir audio they have almost same technology too.
Really unique to see someone trying IEMs for the first time :-) "you can literally just change the cable" LOL.. yup.. it should be noted that really cheap options exist that rival the sound (no not 100%, but mayeb98%) of the super expensive ones. For 1-300$ you can get REALLY awesome IEMs (not with custom molds). And many companies kan make custom molds for them pretty cheap. You can even get really good IEMs (chifi) for as little as 20-50$. Before you go nuts on chinese stuff lets just note that most companies in the west get their components from china also ;-)
Now: The fit is key to getting the sound you want. My ears just dont work with custom molds so I use generic silicone tips. Works for me (session drummer). But you really need to experiment with the tips. Even though two tips might look similar, they DO change the sound dramatically even if the difference is microscopic .
I've been watching this channel on and off for a couple years and I just now realized that your actual last name is "Masters." I straight up thought it was just how you branded yourself.
The pink nametag in the Ziploc bag with your IEM molds had 'Andrew Masters written' on it, and I was like "no way did they actually write your UA-cam name instead of your last name! What even is your actual last name?"
Then I looked you up on google and realized 🤣🤣☠☠
Hey man, how's the sound quality?
Would like to hear what you have to say about the sound and how does it compare to actual studio monitors? Is it a simiar sound signature? Is the sound familiar?
These are the highest studio monitors that you could get Fir audio been working with too artist in the industry.
I’ve been wondering about this as an option. Are you using yours for just tracking or mixing and mastering as well?
Just tracking!
Why did you change from the focals?!??
Didn’t work super well in this room I’m in.
Do they reduce bleed when tracking Andrew?
Absolutely
Short answer. Yes.
sorry but this is more and more becoming a sales channel...
With all due respect this whole video seems like an ad.
Who the fuck is Post Malone
Hey, so can I go to Fir Audio here in Nashville to get started?
