Every working Pro has these three traits. You should too. ua-cam.com/video/5CDdMTkPm4M/v-deo.htmlsi=wzAbYdxZCSqfRw3m watch this next. I appreciate you. I'm glad we found each other.
"Adopt the standards of the person you want to become." What a simple statement and yet oftentimes not so easy to achieve. I like your straightforward style of explanation. Thank you for this video.
Thx for watching. I’m just trying to bring you value. Help you get going. I’m k here for you Tony.
Great content! As someone who just broke through and finally make a living from pictures there’s so much knowledge in your videos. Thank you
let's fucking go. be proud. celebrate that shit. you are now a part of the 16% club. 84% of those that start fail. grab hold and keep pushing... don't think because you had a good year you get to ease off the gas. press that pedal. bring more value. change more lives. you're changing lives with your camera. spread that gift widely.
I love that you tackle other aspects of photography that other photography youtubers dont and give us a holistic view of it
I’m a photographer that has a UA-cam channel. Not a UA-camr. I’m here to bring a fresh new vibe to this space.
EXACTLY.
It's this mindset of higher standards that has allowed me to overcome a heroin addiction that ruled my life for two decades. I stayed complacent on changing for so long because for the majority of that time I had a decent income and could lie to myself about it not being a problem. In the end, however, I ended up living on the street, going through things most just can't comprehend. Getting stabbed, jumped several times, robbed, beaten by cops, insane medical issues related to all that and on and on and on for almost three years, I finally got a bed date (after multiple cancelled dates for various reasons like COVID, insurance clerical error etc.) and got off the street.
Before I got off the street, I got to a point where I remembered how capable I was in the past. I had came back to high school (after getting kicked out 3 times when I was young) and maintained a 4.0 GPA while working several part times gigs. I managed to make a very comfortable living as a felon in my twenties. I participated in leadership in several endeavors. But drugs ruined all of this for me. I couldn't lie to myself anymore and act like I didn't have a problem. I was done and wanted out of that lifestyle forever. I developed a RESOLVE to change. So I went to rehab, got clean, got dentures (lost my teeth living on the street), got a job, a car, built my credit up, saved up a decent amount as a safety net. Then I started a business doing SEO/online marketing, which was my previous career, although I was a sales rep and then sales manager. The problem is, I don't like doing it. I made some money but abandoned that idea. Why work for yourself doing something you hate? Why not do something you love and are good at?
So finally this coming year I'll be registering a new trade name for my new business: videography and photography. I have spent quite a while now building up my skills to be competitive in Davinci Resolve and getting enough gear to get started. At this point I have everything I need, save a couple lights but in a few weeks I'll have those. I have also been building a portfolio to launch my Social Media and website with. Lucky for me I was in online marketing for a decade and can sell myself.
Along all this journey, people I know/knew doubted me and told me it wouldn't work. People from the street said things like "We'll see you back out here in month or so..." and even my family doubted me. Well I now have over 3 and a half years off dope. I don't do meetings and although I believe they have value in fellowship, telling people they are powerless is antithetical to overcoming extreme difficulties. I attend the methadone program, exercise regularly, maintain high standards and write down my goals in a checklist, these things have helped more than anything I learned in the rehab community. ESPECIALLY exercise. It has changed my life. I'll soon be off methadone, which gets a bad rap (with good reason sometimes) but for people who are determined, it's an invaluable tool. I also practice gratitude, which comes naturally after you've been through what I have. And if you've been through what I have and made it out of all that to not be grateful, well you're bound to end up back there again.
Your video really resonates with me, because high standards help you grow. I identify when people try and transfer their own self-doubt on to me and my choices. But when I'm focused on a goal I want and BELIEVE in myself, I make it happen. I have played guitar for 25 years and I can confidently say I am very good at it. I wanted to get in shape as I weighed only 160lbs when I got off the street (I'm 6'1) and after countless hours in the gym, prepping meals and eating consistently I weigh 225lbs, a lot of which is added muscle. I currently work in a metal shop (can't stand doing sales anymore now that I'm sober, morally doesn't sit right with me) and don't make much. I spend every chance I can honing skills in Resolve and taking/editing photos. I have a Canon R5 (plus 3 more cameras) and tons of the NECESSARY gear, a good computer I built for editing and most importantly the MINDSET of someone who is soon to be successful.
Great video man, keep it up!
Thx for sharing

Man this hits home so hard
I have had a camera in my hand since age 11.
When I got out of the service I had an amazing mentor

I have almost thrown in the towel a few time.
I looked at my studio this past Wednesday, what a mess.
Looked at my home office what a mess. Looked at my car and yeah what a mess.
I have had a broke mind set for so long.
I let broke clients dictate my business

Good morning @CARTY! I needed to hear this today. Thank you so much for sharing this with the universe. Now I'm ready to go get it!! Hope to see you at Imaging USA!
I’m in Toronto canada.
Thank you for your videos i freely admit fear holds me back in regards to moving from hobbyist to professional photographer and i need to take a hard look at the root cause of my fear and deal with it head on.
ya you do. when we are addicted to our routine, the thought of changing anything, taking any risk is like jumping off a building. but guess what, we gifted people? we can fly. so do be afraid of starting. failure is how we grow. watch this again a few times. write down the points that hit home. and then read them daily. watching my content is only the spark. you have to gather your own fuel and make your own fire. all I can do is help. but no one can life your life. you got this.
Another great video. Thanks Steve :)
Very welcome

Done! I can’t go any further being the “Broke Photographer”
Why?
I have a job that ‘pays the bills’ but what makes me happy is being creative with my camera. Giving the company 5 days a week and squeezing my dreams into the remaining 2 days isn’t a good balance. I would be happier earning a living with my camera. You mentioned “only getting one shot at this thing called life” that hit me in the chest. I’ve operated safely and conservatively too long. It’s gotten me safe results but true happiness eludes me. I do fear failure but not as much as I want to win by being successful with my creativity. I’m not getting out of here alive, so I might as well take a chance. Bigger risks could produce bigger rewards! That’s my why.
This is so important!
thx for finding me
Nice thoughts. I happen to agree with this one a looong time ago.

This mind set actually led me to God and becoming a catholic.
Now material goals seem irrelevant, got married, 4 kids, wife homeschools and I work remote for some company. My goals, because I wanted to be like St Sebastien, changed a lot. It is possible
jah guides. stay up. stay blessed. but don't forget to value yourself and what you have to offer.
AMEN! New Sub. As a cyclist/mountain biker the way I attempt to share this understanding is that unconscious or conscious we are all on a trail, and that trail ultimately will lead us to some destination/ finish line. Now if we are fortunate/blessed enough to recognize that our energy, mindset, beliefs, choices, behavior will more than likely lead to a predictable finish line, then raising our awareness, to envision our desired finish line, then our mindset, thoughts and actions will begin to align with that trail we're on and SELECTED destination. Know it or not, we are always on a path/trial of choices....some are pre programed and some are self defined. We have to ask ourselves, Where are these moment to moment choices leading me? ?? What trail am I on and where does it come out? Thanks for the inspiration.
of course. I raced mountain bikes for a good while. moved into road bikes and track bikes. currently swapping between my 3 main bikes... I'm glad you found me. stay close. more inspo to come... and yes, I miss the dirt. but I don't miss getting hurt and breaking parts. I got rich when I switched to road... having an extra $400 a month not buying bike bits has be lovely.
Great advice, very wise
Knowledge consumed! 🙂

Yea man, right on time :)
HA! I’m a bit of a late bloomer; I picked up a camera at 47. My family gets on me when I say a photo is “so so”. In actuality, I’ve “adopted a standard” that some of my photos simply don’t meet. THANK YOU for articulating what I couldn’t up till now!
there ya go joel. i'm here for you. take advantage.
This is amazing, 👏
I'm so glad. thanks for being here with us.
Applies equally to the fine arts.
indeed it does.
Basically people have to actively seek solutions on their own.
is that the way?
@@stevecarty People wont accomplish anything sitting on their ass. Networking and learning from others is including with the seeking.
This is true I’ve been filming for seven years and I’ll just take the jobs that come to me. When C-19 hit and I lost hours at my job I made an extra $40,000 filmmaking because I was in survival mode but when my hours came back I got lazy again 😢
You know what you need to do. Why not do it?
@@stevecarty That's where I am now
Thank you for this video.
Glad it was helpful!
I have been looking for someone like you, I want to expand on my skills and abilities. I feel like your style and explanation will help me develop. I ♥️ TO, try to get up there a couple of times per year.
This is not just good advice for photographers it is also good advice for anyone once you remove the photography references.
thanks so much Strangelove
I know people who make good money shooting events. Five Years they still shooting events. The will never shoot for WSJ or Vanity Fair etc. I got published in WSJ and it was a big deal. I've also made $16,000 in one for the Irvine Company.
good shit... live events is taking pictures. i make pictures. concept and execution. anyone take pictures. takes a certain kind of creativity to be able to make pictures. that's what i try to teach.
Opportunities, either you learn how to watch them, project them, and take them down to action, or even better create them and follow the way to enrich them with value. (your own value)
Hello Carty.
In today’s world, can older photographers become successful in fashion/editorial? I’ve assisted many years for pros. Zero input for going pro. I’m a little older now.. am considering to quit due to age.
There is no quit. photography you can do forever. you just got comfortable helping someone else rather than getting great at helping yourself. I'm not the gatekeeper to your Success Rowdy. You are. I'm here to guide and show you frameworks for giving your head a shake and getting your ass in gear, but i can't do the work. You have to believe you're good enough to get off the sidelines and get in the game.
@@stevecarty That’s exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you!!🙏🏻
