  • Here's just a little trick for tincturing incense and smoke for perfumery. Quite an interesting and unique way to go about capturing a soft, subtle, photorealistic incense.

    Genius. Absolutely genius. Thank you. You could make it stronger by 'charging it'; use smaller size fabric and after 2 weeks or so infuse another smaller size fabric with the smoke and put it in the container containing the first fabric and just keep repeating the process until you have a number of infused fabrics.

    Interesting. I do other way. Like an old candle, I burn incense sticks, and cover half of it with a upside down glass becker, letting the smoke travel inside the becker, 2 sticks makes the becker light brown, the more you burn, the stronger it gets, darker brown too. Wash the becker slowly, drop by drop with 96 alcohol, to dissolve the brown with the less possible alcohol, or adjust to tasting, I do prefer stronger, to dilute afterwards... great video ... from another hobbyist :)

    Fascinating! I love different wood smokes. One thing I recently learned is Oud smoke smells completely different from Oud oil. Nice vid! Thank you.

    I tried your method.
    And it is awesome.
    I just still waiting the 90th day of tincturing to use it in formula.

    Hi friend, I did as you did in the video on tincture of incense smoke, I tried after a day to sniff out of curiosity, obviously it must remain to macerate for months as you said .. But the smell was very weak and lasts only 5 minutes on the skin, I'm curious to know if the smell will be more intense in a few months?

      Hello mate, absolutely, tinctures take a bit of time to really sap out the scent from the material. You should notice it get usable from somewhere between 4-6 weeks, but honestly I'll tend to soak something for anywhere between 6-9 months in most cases, unless I need it in a hurry and it's a strong smell that transfers easily.

      @@TalkingScents We hope it works because the smell it has for now is beautiful ... I wish it had 10 times more power 😊 .... And it is the incense that I have been looking for for some time in perfumes but I have never found it

      Cheers Scott, I was asked over on Instagram about that too, so I'll make a video soon with a little update. I've started on a second "collection", sort of by happy accident, but I think it'll give me a more rounded offering, as one of the collections I would say is my taste in things a bit more wearable whilst this new collection is definitely my taste in things that are a bit more testy :)

      Nothing set in stone, but hopefully spring 2020! I'll definitely mention them on the channel beforehand just because I'm quite excited 😬 I have the formulas done and the raw materials stocked, so I'm just sourcing bottles and packaging now. It will be very low key, but when I do talk about it on here properly, I'm planning on getting samples out for anyone who is interested just because I'd love to get feedback from people who aren't family and friends 😆

      @@TalkingScentshopefully there will be some 'unconventional' scents? if any smell like soil - I'm sold already 😂

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  4 роки тому

      Oh absolutely! 😂 the whole collection is based on a 17th century Dutch trade port in Nagasaki, I'd say 1 of the 3 is fairly unconventional with notes like dried leather, wisteria and seaweed... But the other two are more wearable, though all 3 have some funky notes buried in there! One with iris that I wanted to base around Kabuki face paint, summer festivals and the earthy, turn of summer to autumn and another that's based on a brothel, so it's got some very velvety florals, but I wanted to roll with the tea house come brothel vibe, presentable and comforting but with an underlying, raw sexuality, so it got some very carnal notes in my opinion! I actually am working on the second collection right now though which is a bit more "artistic" or you could say "dreadful", the concept is rituals, and the first is based on an Ethiopian coffee ceremony. It's quite a claustrophobic, deep scent which has bitter black coffee, grasses, slate, earth, woodsmoke and black pepper, it's my dream stinky coffee scent 😆 I haven't started the other two yet, but they're going to be based on headshrinking and Famadihana, which is a funary tradition of exhuming your ancestors body and rewrapping the corpse 🙈 I showed the coffee one to my mum when she visited last week and without knowing it was one I made, she said "this is one of your weird perfumes that you keep buying isn't it?" 😂 I'm getting well ahead of myself here though, I need to make enough of the first collection first! Haha

    • @k.424
      @k.424 4 роки тому

      That all sounds rather exciting, but that coffee one sounds absolutely amazing! Hopefully the coffee is nice & strong 😁
      Maybe a little too early to ask, but do you know if all the ingredients you're using are vegan friendly and cruelty free?

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  4 роки тому

      They are! The only animal ingredient I ever use is Ambergris because I can personally square that, since it's just a byproduct that you literally can't farm and the whale couldn't care less about it, but I'll definitely mark it as being used and be transparent with what synthetics I'm using in terms of musks and synthetic animalics etc. I'm not a fan and don't agree with the use of animal products generally though, so my line in the sand is pretty far out, it's essentially ambergris and nothing else. Same with animal testing etc. Unless you class any of my friends as animals and to be fair, you might not be too far wrong with that lol

    What about using DPG instead of coconuts?

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  4 роки тому +1

      I don't think it would hurt to use it, but I have never tried, so not sure on how well it would work. One of the benefits of coconut oil is it will, over time, separate from the alcohol, so you can filter it off once your tincture is done, whereas I guess DPG would just blend with the alcohol. I don't think it would hurt at all though.

    Why not just put the actual incense in the Perfumers alcohol to begin with?

    • @TalkingScents
      @TalkingScents  4 роки тому +1

      I suppose you could do that if you wanted the incense cleanly, but this is to capture the more acrid smoke to use alongside an incense accord for a subtle burning effect. Technically you could do this all with aromachems, make your incense accord, pair it with a smoke, done. This way gives you a more natural smoke that pairs well with an incense accord, however, since it has elements of incense within it. It's also naturally very soft and easy to use.
