This is a big part of my childhood and aside from impeccably adapting the looks the humor, the story and the characters, I think not enough people mention how awesomely they made the gaul villagers really feel like one community. They get a huge number of moments to show they are one big group of friends and neighbours at the end of the day. Like near the end of this scene. The old guy yells that he wants to join the fight to have fun and the others throw him a Roman soldier so he can feel like he's participating. Then, when he gets slapped to the ground, they toss the soldier back and crowd around him to check if he's okay, then once he reveals he forgot to drink from the potion, they all go "Aaah, whoops, so that's why, it's okay old timer!" just looking happy he's okay and nothing is wrong with him. It all just feels heartwarming.
I've watched exactly 3 minutes of this movie, and I'm already amazed at the variety of the actor's faces and body types, the quality of adaptation, and everything else you've mentioned. This has some great qualities I don't see in movies very often, and I'm going to try to find a copy of the original to watch.

It's charming, it's funny, it has great chemistry between the two lead actors playing Asterix and Obelix, the designs they implemented make the characters look realistic while still resembling their cartoon counterparts and it brings an actually unique story into the world of these characters. Plus it gets pretty terrifying a couple times.
In real life many gaul chieftons chose cesar tho and fought the other tribes. There where thousands of gaul auxiliaries in Cesars army. It wasnt like in the movie bro.

It's quite popular in Russia. Especially the first two movies. Still love them with all my heart, a big part of my childhood :3 And all of them are dubbed in Russian also.

its amazing to me how RIGHT!!! they got everything. Idefix the dog, Obelix and asterix, the old man and his wife, Abtakatrix on his shield, the fucking way the dudes just crashed into those turtles and send dudes flying, literally point on point like in the comics... its insane how right they got everything. This is how you do a movie live action adaptation. Not this garbage we have nowdays where they change everything and nothing looks right and the story isnt cannon and blah blah this and copyrights that... this is art

The first is ok, then it went downhill fast. The cartoons are classics, though - well, the old ones. The new stuff, both comic books and movies, somehow lack the soul, especially after Albert Uderzo died.

The most recent Asterix film I liked are the 3D animated ones. That moment when the whole band captured running down the hill to attack romans with their bare hands is so good, full of vital power, just look at this passion and desire at main characters faces, and those emerald lushes on the background, oh i love this scene. P.s responding to most popular comment: well yeah its pretty accurate, not in case of flying soldiers, of course, but celts and spicifically really was that bold and courage, some of them wad fighting not only with bare hands but all naked, yeah. And there was some kind of "magic potions", for sure;)
Here's a little fun fact: In sweden Asterix voice actor voiced nearly ever Asterix movie made after this one, maybe the exception being the one with the Vikings.

Gerard Depardieu is to Obelix what Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine. You don't see an actor do his job. You see a childhood hero come to life. While I never saw someone get Asterix right in these movies, Gerard got Obelix down perfectly. Where Asterix is more of a mature, brilliant strategist, Obelix is the peaceful, childish, friendly giant. In the animated movies they got both down perfectly. But here, I never bought Asterix. But maybe it's just me, and my fanboy heart for a dimwitted, massive, strong manchild, with a taste for wild boar.
Despites the movie being pretty terrible, and despite the low screentime Asterix had, i like Clovis Cornillac interpreation in the Olympics games. He has the face and he plays well the grumpy but smart little hero we kow.

I prefer the "vicious" style of this young clavier, the kind of "malin comme un renard" Asterix is not grumpy, this is an error... is angry with Obelix when obelix is stuborn or the village do stupid stuff, Asterix is wise and smart, and full of vitality. Corniac was just mid.

I grew up with the French dub and I didn’t even know that there was an English dub. Too bad they didn’t continue dubbing French Astérix movies in English.
I was worried about clicking on this for the longest time, as I was afraid I wouldn't like this adaptation. Caesar's prosthetic nose scared me. I am genuinely glad that I was wrong in my apprehension, the big charge had me grinning like a loon.
At 0:37 they shout "Par-Tu-Ta-Tais!", that's a translation error: The original Asterix comic (and this film) is French, so the original text read "Par Toutatis!" which would translate to "For Tutatis!", a deity from the Gaul pantheon.
They have created many live-action movies, this was the first one and the most successful one, the others a pretty much ''meh'' but this is is pure gold.

I liked the episode where they go to Britain and find the British Celts very weird. They drive their chariots on the left side of the road and drink boiling water every afternoon.
