- Каракачаните (на гръцки: σαρακατσάνοι) са гръцкоговореща етническа общност, основно живеещи в планините Пинд в Гърция и Източна Стара планина в България. В миналото са били номади, препитаващи се с отглеждането на овце, преработка и продажба на мляко, месо, вълна. По-голямата част от каракачаните имат гръцко национално съзнание. Отличават се със свой бит и култура, която няма аналог. Говорят каракачански диалект на гръцкия и са източноправославни християни.

The Karakachani (Greek: Σαρακατσάνοι) are a group of Greek transhumant shepherds in Greece. Historically centered around the Pindus mountains but now they have been urbanised to a significant degree. Most now reside throughout Central and Northern Greece. A large group lives in Central Bulgaria, around Stara Planina.

Съгласен съм с мнението, че са участвали в обсадата на Константинопол и са най древното население на Балканите, по-еленчени идвали тук със стадата си и се връщали говорейки български език :)

I am a Karakachan from Greece,Karakachans are not Vlachs,they only speak Greek with many archaisms ,not Aromanian.Our homeland is in the Greek mountains of Pindus.

В проведеното през 2011 г. преброяване на населението на България броят на хората, самоопределили се като каракачани, е 2511, 1479 от които посочват гръцкия като свой майчин език, 465 българския, 549 друг, а само 17 не са го самоопределили.
И още каракачаните са сред последните войски участвали в отбраната на Константинопол в началото на 15 век, когато турците изградили крепостта Юшкудар за да подчинят Константинопол.
А защо точно на Карандила се събират всяка година? Доколкото знам от Сърбия,Гърция,Македония и България всички каракачани там отиват

simply put, in Zagori there lived Vlachs as Wace and Thomas record, today there are still 3 villages with Vlach population, Sarakatsani dialect retains Vlach words and what you say about ancient Greek words is interesting. Beeing the oldest population of Greece, as shown by anthropological studies (although they look identical to Vlachs, so both are old :)) ) and living more to the South of the Egnatia road than VLachs, they might have come into contact with the long lost real Greeks.
Sarakatsamoi speak greek not vlach.

And they showed that they are more Greek than any other Balkan country 😄 the Bulgarian sarakatsani have mixed with locals that’s why they have light eyes and hair the Greek one are like the rest of Greeks.if you go to Peloponnese ,Rumeli central Greece, Thessaly and Ipeiros you are gonna listen this type of music
@MAXIMILIANVS I wouldn't say all people in Greece look simmilar. Maybe more than other countries, Greece is a melting pot for ethnicities and has naturally started mixing the traits. However as the landscape of Greece allows 2 race types, Vlachs are originally a Northern race, adapted to mountain living somewhat different than the Mediteranean one, of the Greeks. Albanians also are easier to spot. One good observer can recognise a Vlach on the street of Athina.

I was born in Kaylar (Ptolemaida now)and I'm half Wallach and half Laz (grandfather from Kars).Let's not try to put old tribes into modern nationalities-evrybody is everywhere now,sex had no borders...
Karakatsani ili Sarakatsani sa Grci brate! Sa iz Rumeli rayion, iz Agrafa Planina (Central Greece). They lived with their sheeps etc here and there. Pre 1920 nebili granici. Bila samo Otoman empire.
The oldest people in Greece are first recorded at the begining of the XIXth century, and until 1900 still mostly called Vlachs. They call eachother Vlach. 40 Vlach villages in Zagori were hellenised by Aetolous in the XIXth century and are now considered Karakatsanoi, every aspect of their culture besides their Greek language with many Vlach words points to a pure Vlach background. Pindus is and was always Vlach. Karakatsanoi show the great ingenuity of Greek assimilation.
You speak about aromanians those are from pindus mountain and are from greek tribes from pindus
VLACHI and SARAKATSANI are two seperate Groups . Vlachs speak Latin and Greek , Sarakatsani speak only Greek

Our family fname "kaçanik" ler ;-ler turkish suffex for pulural.
kaçan means fast runner,
karakaçan means kara: beatuful, kaçan:fast runner.
Karakacani in ottoman turkish Karakacanlar.
Osmani for Osmans.
Ottomani for Orromans or Ottomanich

Каракачаните най вероятно са еленизирани траки във връзка с това се смята че те наред с арумъните, мизите и многобройните тракийски племена са едни от най старите жители а балканите.
