  • Why You Should Start Mock Scrapes Now, Tips And Tactics | Midwest Whitetail
On this week’s episode, we head out with Jared Mills and Kaleb Greiner as the guys set up a new mock scrape with the hope of monitoring summer antler growth. The guys walk us through each step of setting up new scrapes and discuss their experience using them as a tool to take inventory of an entire deer herd.

Another option to try in the scent department, i throw cotton swabs and a flip top plastic container in my hunting pack and when I harvest a doe or a buck I will rub the swabs are over the pre orbital and orbital glands, the tarsals, and even their bodies, throw them in the freezer and use the following year, pretty cheap and works great!

Iove the vine scrapes. We dont ever use scent though. Just hang and let the deer put there own scent on it.

Tip for you I use, bring a portable drill innthe woods, drill holl through one end, feed rope through, attach with a nylon rope and tie it off a sturdy overhang branch , also, they work fantastic on field edges, rake underneath, take a pee in it, works awesome.

I have used the grape vines now for a few years and I would clear out the dirt below it and just pee in it. The deer will then take it over and put their own scent on it. I have never had any luck with scents.

Agree with ~1" diameter, fairly straight, hung vertical with the bottom being around waist high. Disagree that it needs to be a vine (have proof that branches work), doesn't need to be relatively rigid (hang all mine from a rope) and no scents are needed. Got thousands of pics of all caliber of deer (and bear) visiting the site. Note too that the scrape site needs to be fairly level with space to move around or they may shy away.

The tail end of that video was that rope? If so was it cotton rope or nylon? Great video! Going to head out this weekend to put some out!

With putting cameras and the vine out early have you had negative effects? Like having mature deer come in that early and never come in front of that camera again?

I pulled hundreds of feet of woodvine out of a dead oak on my property @ 🏡. 3 huge oak branches that separated from the trunk were actually held up by woodvine. I used arborist equipment to lower these branches & others down down to remove everything but the spar of the dead oak. In March & April I put out a dozen grape/wood vine in 2 different areas. Only hang in thick areas that r traveled well by deer closer to bedding areas heading to stands of oaks where the cover isn't so thick. Gives u a spot where u can have a 🦌 focus on something else & not u. I do this in public areas off the beaten trail which is harder to get to than most. When the timing is right I know b4 ( I get to my 🌳 that I pull myself up into with a climbing rope) where my camera is going to be pointing @. I put my camera out in mid-August up in the 🌳 I'm hunting out of angling down @ that licking spot. I got many short video mode captions last year & the woodvine is just something that I can hang with paracord tied tightly to a branch above that will entice deer but not people. If these were spots that people spent time going into I wouldn't be hanging a Browning camera just to get no video while risking the loss of a great hunting tool.

How far do you put your cameras to the mock scrape?
