An outstanding student produced documentary about "The most exciting band in the land." It does a great job of capturing the excitement and spirit of a unique experience for thousands of former and Bobcats.
Great memories from many years ago.
Congratulations to Carter and Kaylee and all of the others from WOUB-TV.

They're the best damn band in the land. Don't ever correct to this 'most exciting' sanitized garbage.

I regret that I have but one "like" to give this video. Those were some of the very best days of my life.

Love the band and its enthuasim, but is there a reason why they have no drum major? I saw one at 6:59, and parts of the uniform behind Dr. George Brozak during his interview, but no drum major in the current band. When did the Ohio Marching 110 discontinue the drum major position, and if so, why?

First off, let me state my qualifications - I was a member of the band from 1971-1974, the last four years of the Marching Men of Ohio.
There was a drum major from 1967-1970. 1970 was also the last year Gene Thrailkill was the director of the band, as the founder of the present style. It also was the senior year of DM Dave Fowler, who basically set a very high standard. Dave was a dancing DM and a very good one. When Dave graduated, there were questions about who would or even could replace him. With Gene leaving, no decision was made and would be left to the incoming director. Tom Lee, the director from 1971-72, opted to go without a DM, and as a result, the band block took on an increased dancing role. Dave's dancing was extremely popular, and having the whole band dance was a way of paying tribute to his integral role and replacing him without actually replacing him. There was only one or two other times that someone wore the DM uniform, and that was to lead in some parades where there was high media exposure. But the on-field DM role left with Dave Fowler, and the whole band has been dancing ever since.

You do realize at 1:06 that's Ohio State's director Manley Whitcomb creating the formation for the Ohio State University Marching Band right? Just an FYI.

Yep. When I was in the 110, I did a lot of work trying to track down the origins of the Diamond Ohio. I spoke to OSU, and they said they had gotten it from an Ohio Army Reserve unit, which used the same general image but with rounded "o"s.
So yes, both bands use the image, but both bands "borrowed" it from elsewhere.

I also know this organization intimately and love it with all my heart. Also, I'm using my real name, and not hiding behind internet anonymity. So there's that.
