For example, when asked about Ohtani coming to watch the game, I think a better translation would be "I really didn't expect him to come", meaning that he was really surprised and happy that Ohtani came. The translation was "I didn't think he would come", which might imply that he was expecting to be disappointed. Some of the other responses, especially at the end, also kind of trailed off without totally completing the thought. Probably not important to the meaning, but some details were left out. Sometimes I think that in situations like this, it might be better to have a native English speaker translating because it's more important to translate the nuance to the media than it is for the player to completely understand the questions. However, it's a tricky situation.

You should know that American players been in Japan for over 10 years cannot speak Japanese and have interpreters. So don’t be petty. Shohei’s (and Yoshi) work is not to immigrate to America and get a job. They are athletes who do not come from a third world country and working to get an American citizenship nor permanently immigrate, Furthermore their work is to play professional sports not to talk, will not waste valuable time and energy in learning a new language when they need to use that time to horn their skills. that’s why they are provided interpreters!
Why should he learn it if he's only working here for a few years max in a roll he doesn't have to say a word in? He's Japanese. Can you greet him in his language? Then why should he greet you in yours? There is no national language in USA on Federal level so behave. Remember most European and Japanese learn English, Americans can't even speak English.
