Naugard | Nobleman of Novgorod vs Knight of the Holy Roman Empire

- Naugard is the old German name for the Rus kingdom of Novgorod. Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia and traded extensively with the Holy Roman Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries. German clothing was the dress of the noblemen in Novgorod, but they had their own beautiful style of armour. My opponent in this duel is a harness fencer and reenacter of the late medival Novgorod. My armor is inspired by differend armor pieces of the Holy Roman Empire in the 15th century.
After the shaft of my poleaxe broke in the first recorded fight of the day, I only had a one-handed sword and a dagger at hand, so we started another duel. The weapon combination is familiar from the character "Peacekeeper" in the game "For Honour". It was still an interesting weapon combination and a nice duel with a perfect stab into my opponent's eye at the end.

Wouldn't a hatchet + shield be one of the worst setups when fighting against a fully harnessed opponent? The hatchet cannot really pierce the mail at the joints, and doesn't deliver enough blunt force to get an edge.
@@alexandreboureau6175 even the blunt axe dented my helmet, but of course there are better weapons against armor!
Wasn't Novgorod a principality whose princes were elected by its nobles, not a kingdom?
@@angusyang5917 possible, in the 14th century it was even a republic.
Yes, you are right. Novgorod was ruled by princes who were sent there according to the will of Great princes of Kiev or Vladimir. But the citizens could reject this will and choose their own ruler. It was a Republic till the late 15th century when it lost the war against Moscow
It's so good to see armoured knights fighting in such great camera quality. Looks so real, it's amazing!
The legend ist back! In my opinion its the closest we can get to real historical late medieval fighting and I love it! Its like taking a glimpse into a time couple of hundreds of years ago. Mach weiter so!
I will continue!
Another excellent fight! The shot of the terrain at the beginning was breathtaking 😃
Thank you for the short history lesson in your comment as well. You are bringing the past to life
Thanks.
Yes, this was quite informative and i enjoyed this as well.
damn shield is so scary, you literally battle against a wall, impressive fight as always
Your videos are truly spectacular, both in cinematography and in skill, keep up the good work 👍
KCD2 be Like. Great fight as always ⚔️
amazing video as always! I've been waiting for another knight duel
I will deliver in two weeks!
That shot in the forrest goes so hard when you approach your opponent.
I hope he had eye protection ! Ouch !
Yes there is hidden eye protection under the chain mail. It's a special helmet, only build to fight against me. 😅
@@dequitem Specific armour against you? I see you're a repeating eye stabber!
He clones himself.
@@dequitem Well I feel better I didn't watch a full fledged murder then haha
Fight is not the word I would use though.....
the video and sound quality are top tier
I LOVE THESE ❤ Du bist ein wahrlich großer Mann, so wie dein Kollege ❤
Rest in peace, comrade 😢
Here are my questions:
1-) Why does Knight holding his dagger in reverse grip sometimes, what's the functional difference of holding it reverse and normal?
2-) Why doesn't knight without shield goes directly to wrestling since he has more protection he can tank few hits before reaching other one and disarms him?
Sorry If my questions are stupid I don't know a lot of thing when it comes to armored fencing.
By holding a dagger in reverse grip, you can put more weight into the strike, maybe push it with the free hand too, helps pierce the chain mail
I do HEMA and a bit of dagger sparring now and then and all I can say is, different grips just offer different angles from which to make a powerfull strike from. Reverse grip is mostly used in dagger vs dagger, as it offers good striking opertunities to the head and upper torso. The historical sources also show dagger mostly in reverse grip, but not always. It really depends on the situation and what you intend to do.
Like @@artserg2169 said. Try this yourself, take a pen, butter knife, whatever you have around you, try holding it in forward and reverse grip, using your other hand to support it from the back side and see what is easier to maneuver and push forward.
As for why you don't close to wrestling immediately, even in armor it's still dangerous to move in without first addressing the weapon of the opponent.
Good questions, stay curious!
No problem.
The reverse grip on a dagger make him stronger as a defensive weapon against heavier weapons and creates a hook to trap the enemy weapon. Unfortunately I don't managed to hook his axe in the first duel. In closed combat you can get better around the opponents guard and stab him in the back.
The normal grip makes the dagger more of a offensive weapon for quick and mor ranged attacks. I normally prefer this stile of holding a dagger but when you pull the dagger out of your scabbard it is easyer to grab it in reverse grip.
The Russian armor is a little bit thicker and has more softer parts that can take out the force of strikes but is weaker against thrusts, so the sword was actually a little bit more dangerous at a longer range.
Ihmo, wrestling immediately against a man with an axe, even if you are donned with a full plate armour,is very dangerous.
awesome channel! just subbed!
Mal wieder ein Meisterwerk. 👍
Ja!!
One thing I notice is how well you all move in your armor as when i sometimes see people moving in other videos they seem a bit more clumsy or at least not as solid as you all seem. Does it have to do with how often you are training and wearing it or the "tailoring" of your armor as far as fitting/how well it's made? What I like is that your non-choriographed fighting really shows how deadly people in armor could be. Either way, your fights are always entertaining and informative.
It's a mix of both!
@@dequitem makes sense and it shows :)
Real footage of Panzer 4 vs KV-1 in the middle of the woods in 14-15th century .
Nice, the main weapon gets the kill for a change. Its always the dagger stealing the spotlight
it's interesting to think that a long time ago scenes like this were real
Given your opinions on axes versus plate armour, did the Novgorodrian have any real chance of winning this fight without changing to their dagger? The axe lacks a thrusting point and can't get past the maille in any of the gaps and the axe head itself lacks the force to significantly injure through plate.
Yes he has a chance with a good hit to the head ore if he hook my unarmored parts on my back. He won the third duel. I will upload it tomorrow as a short.
Regardless of this particular fight, I have to add that the experience of the large bugurts like "Battle of nations" shows that the concussive effect of axe hits to the head shouldn't be neglected: even if the helmet is intact, the brain inside might feel no so good )

please, brother...never stop
So peacefull to watch.
The Novgorod guy armour resembles me a typical Lithuanian armour of the period. Now I wonder how much influence both places had on each other.
Gigantic influence!
Keep up the great work.
Beautiful fight, no one does this stuff on youtube.
Wow. I thank you very much for representing culture of my people as well. We got a lot of recreationists here too. Maybe some day you can come visit 😊
I will try!
what a magnificent shot...
Great video as always. This may be a crazy question but I have been playing Resident Evil a lot lately. What would be the best medieval weapons to use during a zombie apocalypse. Durability wise. Would knights be basically unkillable by zombies?
I think a flanged mace is mayby the best weapon if a heads hot realy kills. If you have to disable them than I would use a big falchion to cut them. I prefer onehanded weapons against unarmed zombies!
The best armor is thick padded Gambeson, but I fear to be infected from blood and drool. So mayby a gas mask under the full helmet made out of safety glas! Mayby I make a video about it when the new game blight arrives.
I cant believe this comment section is still civil!
And I am happy about it.
They look kinda awkward and clumsy ... which is what I expected fighting in full armour. Very good. Looking forward to more. Cheers!
I was just thinking how the stiffness and awkwardness of movement reminds me of animations in games like Dark Souls - they feel not very natural but person in full harness also moves kind of different than what we are used to seeing on daily baisis.
@@urof I come from long, long ago from a galaxy far, far away and I have never played a video game other than tetris. In my Reality we have no need for Artificial Reality Generators because we already live in a perfectly good real Reality.
The stiffness of the walking of video game characters is due the - so far - impossibility of digitizing gait. Until gait can be digitalized there will be no natural movements in Artificial Reality Generators.
Thanks for the reply.
HI! Ive only just discovered your channel and i love what ive seen so far, I just have a quick question. Do you guys wear anything like safety glasses under the helmets or anything? Watching those jabs at the face made me squirm thinking about if you accidentally got your friend in the eye.
Only the helmets but they are designed for that sport.
Almost like a jab, straight down the middle.
I deadass thought this was modded skyrim at first
Me, a half German trying to embrace my culture:
Some game dev should just watch some of these video's and try to make a game based on what he watched.
While I am relatively familiar with the armor of the HRE Knight, what is EXACTLY the composition/name of the armor of the Novgorod Nobleman, especially compared to the Knight? Does it protect less or more? Is less or more comfortable, for those who experienced both?
My apologies if it's a very ignorant question.
What are your feeling about having your dagger in your hand ? Was it a good tactic or loadout ?
My thought are you would be more succesfull with the good old half swording then wrestling with the dagger ^^
I want to try this but I feel the same. Halfswording and a dagger on your side is more effective!
Thats a beautiful sword. Do you have a video on that sword?
Nop but mayby in future!
Where is that foest located?
The birds sounds are added, correct?
Go to the forest anywhere in the north hemisphere now and you will probably hear some birds too 😉
Yes I always redesign the sound with overlapping timelines, but both sounds are from that forest, because you often hear planes in the sky or high roads from behind the next valley.
Another proof that armour is highly underestimated.
Definitely think you should do more of the alternate ending thing that the 19th century duel had. (We just want to see more cool knights kill each other)
I like to show one good fight and not all 3 duels I normaly record. In the 19th century saber duel video I recorded a full day with 8 duels, so I had much to choose from, I don't have this opportunity in my armored fights were my opponent hasn't often the stamina to fight more than 3 duels and often the 3 is already to short for a good fight.
Absolutely right and truly spoken!
Great! What about poleaxe, boar-spear and grandfalcion?
I would take a poleaxe, but many knights prefer the spear on the battlefield. A twohanded Falchion wasn't that common. I have one and I don't like it that much. Stabbing is always more powerful than slashing against armor!
@@dequitem , Is polex viable in combat without armor?
I heard a fair amount of heavy breathing from mid point to the end. How tired where you guys near the end? Where you extremely exhausted, like sprinting 500 meters and you really just wanted to lie down :) or was it just controlled heavy breathing which would still allow you guys to be effective for another two or three minutes?
More controled breathing. Yes we are exhausted in the end, but you also have to breath more intense to get fresh air in the helmet.
Болеем за наших, граждане :)
Was holding fists for our guy, yeah -- till you put him out of his misery with that misericordia (?) of yours :)
Holy Roman knight goes back in Time to beat his rival house member. Turns out hes a foreigner after all 😅
😅
Have you ever been seriously injured in one of these duels?
If I recall correctly he mentionned in a comment once that he had to be rushed to the hospital because of duel. The dagger had him circumcised. Luckily, they attached it back.
@@beesmongeese2978 Damn that and the eyes are the worst places to get injured...
Remember to always wear a cup when ending them rightly.
@@SoilentBeef And I'm totally not making that up
Yes I was a couple of times in the hospital because of duels, but not because of a dagger. I had a brocken arm from a Zweihänder were the bone of my elbow pierced the flesh from inside and was sticking out of my arm. It needed 2 operations. I have an 10 cm long scar on my right arm from it.
Where is this beautiful place?
Regenstein north Germany.
It's Kuros from Wizards and Warriors!
О, нет! Жалко древнего руса... А так бой красивый, мое уважение
At the time of independent Novgorod, there was no full plate armor yet😂
There was plate armor around 1300 - 1400!
Day 1 of asking Dequitem to shoot a movie 😤

Does the Novgorod guy ever win in these videos?
Which one of them is who? 😅

@@dequitem I would gladly run away in fear :)
so the German did not lose
isn't that illegal?
I lose in the short version.
Predictable. No dagger = lose
He also had a dagger.
What I find funny about watching these fights is that from my perspective it looks unimpactful. I'm sure this stuff hurts, but it looks more like two beasts hitting each other with pool noodles that just bounce off.
😅
😅
The weapon might bounce but the kinetic energy keeps going forward until absorbed by the body behind the armor . Or it breaks bones 😂
Кто нибудь тоже заметил что превью видео, это Джоджо референс?
It isn't. I never watched Jojo 😅
@@dequitem Значит ты сделал ДжоДжо референс неосознанно.
Good thing neither of them can generate any real power. Somebody could get hurt at your cos play event. Way to staged, stilted, and lacking commitment by both fighters. Beautiful armor and cinematography, though. Kudos on those fronts.
🤔 Why do u think we don't strike with full force and why should this be a cos play event?
none of these larps take into account the adrenaline and brute strength they would've had not just doing motions. like these swings weak af
And you know that from? 😂😂😂
Great video, but you should give us a close up of each full kit before the fight, kind of hard to really admire the beautiful armor sets from afar
Next time. There will be more videos with him in the future and also a showcase of his armor in some month.
Great idea!
@@dequitem thank you, i was actually going to comment to request hi res photographs and/or footage of the armor in depth, i love the kits you create and wish to study and draw them in greater ability
Is that armor called Kuyak?
I gib 420
Maybe the best fight yet, mainly because of how well the opponent reacted to taking the head thrust(s) and the end there
Honestly your vids really inspire the imagination. It seems fights like these really were two armored opponents using all their strength and energy to hit each other, over and over, until one or the other got too tired, or took a fatal hit. I can see the skill involved but damn, this is so much more brutal than the dramatizations from movies and TV. Amazing stuff!
that intro aerial view + forest location 🤌
Me too.
Beautiful
That axe thrust to neck at 1:14 can't possibly have been pleasant. The reaction looked perfect for cinema.
Wasn't acted. It got me good.
Ha, nice catch! What a scene :D
that forest shot is beautiful
Thanks.
Those faints and stabs with the sword under and over the shield and into the neck - good, good work, just like boxing. Awesome!
That is an AWESOME thumbnail
I hope you also liked the fight and visual of the location.
@@dequitem All of your fights and visuals are top notch!
Absolutely. The helmet is not a reproduction, it is optimized for harness fencing with some hidden face protection. The rest of the armor is late 14th century, so there is nearly 100 years of time difference between for common use. Thanks for pointing that out!
Yes you are correct. The gloves are a safety compromise. The axe is X. century but I dont have a correct 14th century axe. For the helmet are different opinions. Some date it 14th century, some early.

Once again a masterpiece!! ❤ Did the opponent go down because the sword "went through" the eye-slit? Or was it just the good hit on the head sending him to sleep?
I like the russian armor a lot, whats the oppinion from your buddy on the Armor? What does he likes and what does he dislike? Btw. In western europe you dont see a lot of this armor type. Sadly.

aw shield knight didn't win this one. Maybe next time, shield knight.
He win the third duel and I will use his win in the short for tomorrow.
Excellent video as always, friend. I've been watching alot, but i think this is my first time commenting. I have a sort of off topic question for you...
Would you feel confident that your armour would protect you from a large bear?? It's been debated so much on the internet but i can't really come to any conclusions... i figured you'd have a pretty decent answer since you are in armour and fight alot with it. So, would you feel confident fighting a bear with your armour?? or do you think it's just not worth it and better to go no armour and focus on dodging?? Thanks in advance!
I would never be confident to fight a bear and I think it's a dumb idea and the bear will win in most cases (depends on the weapon of course). But if I have to fight the bear no matter, I would definitely use my armor. Because you don't move that slower in armor, but ure chances to survive a strike from the claws are much higher. A bear will definitely catch you anyway. Remember a bear can run faster than a horse!
@@dequitem I agree it's deffinately not something you should go looking for; but you never know, one could come out while you are filming!! I was just curious if you think the armour would work or be a detriment. Alot of people say that they have too much blunt force behind their attacks that it would still break you even if it doesn't break the armour; but i don't really believe that is the case. A bear standing on it's hind legs and taking a swipe at you cannot compare to something a polehammer or halberd. Sure the bear is stronger than a human, but the polehammer/halberd has all the power concentrated on a single point and ends up dealing much more damage than a bears paw that is so big and has the energy dispersed. If that's not convincing enough, they say that a lance attack from a horse's full gallop can actually do more damage than a 50 BMG (a really big sniper rifle)... and considering we don't die from the kinetic force of the lance attack; i don't think a bears attack carries enough kinetic force either.
Anyways, keep up the good work friend!
Thank you
