Just starting air brushing. Seems like I go into overload every time I watch a how to video on line. This video was perfect. The reason for me feeling this way, even though you have a lot of knowledge and experience, you got straight to the point and didn’t try to impress upon me how much you really know. You seem to know your audience. Please KISS. ( KEEP IT SIMPLE STUDENTS)THANK YOU!
I only use Acrylics, Tamiya, Model Air, mig and some Hataka. Your hot water trick works great on the Tamiya X and XF. Like you I do a final alcohol rince. I only do 1/72 WWII planes. I don't miss any of your videos, NOT ANY. You have my life airbrushing so much BETTER. Thank You.
I've been using this method since the first time you shared it a few years ago Robert and it works like a charm. Being an apartment dweller I have to use acrylics. The only exception is primers and that's always going to be Mr Hobby Surfacers. 👍👍
Many acrylic users complaint about dry tip and clogs, especially Vallejo. But it is all about trigger control. Use the double action airbrush correctly. You need to spray air-paint-air. Never stop spraying air. Do this and there will be very little drytip or problems 👍
100%. Another tip is to use the vallejo flow improver, it does miracles to avoid dry tips. I just use a few drops to "lubricate" the airbrush and that is it.
I remember your video a while ago talking about same subject, cleaning acrylics. Before that, cleaning acrylic varnishes from airbrush was a nightmare, then I saw you using hot water, tried it, and it really works. After that I bought electric kettle and thermos mug just for cleaning airbrush. I do one thing differently: after few flushes with hot water, I use VMS acrylic cleaner ( up to 1/3 airbrush cup, and instead cotton swabs, I use round brush (5-8 size). Thanks for showing that technique then, and now for everyone that missed it back then!
Great tip! I use hot water to do most of the cleaning legwork and I'll generally clean it up for good with some simple green. Also, kudos for always reppin' the metal!
Another great video. I just received my Gaahleri New Game Start Ambition Series airbrush and compressor kit that you reviewed a few videos ago, and my Barbatos Rex Swallow Tail with fan cap and stand is on the way. Got a great deal on the Swallow Tail, Cyber Monday sale with the fan cap and stand was only $124. Can’t wait to try them all out together.
Vallejo is the brand I have the most of mostly (followed close by the much maligned craft paints) out of just where I was when I started and picking up small starter sets and expanding outward. Still getting used to using the airbrush more as I've got a lot of things ready for priming and basecoating. Every video gives me another firm boot to the butt to get further down that road :) Thanks!

Awesome, great to see a version of the quick clean for acrylics. Very interested in your review of Ammo's ATOM paints. From what I've seen so far people seem to like the ATOM line
I did the same. I would love to buy a Pace, but I just can’t afford it. I have a lot of resources at work. Made mine very close to Robert’s Pace. Message me and I will show you my plans and such.
ATOM has a pack for painting Gundam kits. It is called ATOM Beginners Set: SCI-FI Colors, and i bought one to give to my brother for Christmas. I have been trying to get him into painting his Gundam kits. We are going to start with some HG kits and work our way up to PG.
Great video! I have the same Grex, great airbrush. I use an Iwata Neo for spraying Vallejo primers or clear varnish and wow, are they way cloggier than just paint. Really aggressive bonding power; that is way harder to clean out than Vallejo paint. I might try your hot water trick , thanks!
Do you think you could do a tutorial on dry brushing as an alternative to airbrushing? I’ve seen people talk about it online recently, but haven’t really seen it first hand tested by someone who knows all about these paints. I’m enjoying these tutorial style videos.
Boiling water does well at cleaning a lot of things (that won't be ruined by it), it's even used to strip car bodies as an alternative to acid dip if I didn't hear wrong.
Rex: first I am hearing of your planned acrylic line. I use acrylics exclusively so my ears perked up. Could you mention a little more about them in an upcoming video? Which manufactures are you looking to match or improve upon and color range?
I was all acrylic until I tried a Mr surfacer and the durability difference is crazy. Now the only acrylic i like is tamiyas because it's still a solvent.
I'd love to see you test out/clean the Archive-X paints sometime...the enamels are gorgeous, and so are the acrylics... WHEN they're thinned properly...and if they're mixed properly...and if the stars align 😅
Found your channel a couple weeks ago. I am not around gunpla tube alot but i have always hand brushed or rattle-canned. New England winters suck so youre helping me train for airbrushing this winter. Taking the plunge-- thanks for the help
Acrylics yes, solvents go intoa jar with cat litter or oil dry. Once it's dried up I put a lid on it and bring it to my local dump . Takes a while so I'm not running to the dump once a month
Why can’t you use alcohol for Vallejo? What property do the Vallejo acrylics have that preclude using alcohol? I’d like to know so that I can recognize this scenario with any other paints I use in the future that aren’t covered in this video.
Do you ever find yourself wanting to match a color from an image or a photo? How do you go about making a match and ending up with an airbrush paint that looks like you expected from the photo or image etc.. I’d love to see a video where you demonstrate making matches. I know there are some online tools like Golden etc.. but it would be cool to see someone actually do it 🙂
Any tips on cleaning out Stynylrez? Seems like if I don't do a full teardown of the airbrush and completely flush with lacquer thinner/acetone it's like I airbrushed superglue.

It can't be helped. It's definitely a common thing with acrylics, I usually just clean the tip after I am finished with each color.

No. Not with a good quality airbrush. Water is harmless, even boiling water
