You know as a 53 year old 60s child I STILL cannot come to terms with the fact that there is a generation out there only hearing this work of Funky art FOR THE FIRST TIME??!! Damn I'm old.....
This was the Gap Band's stabb at a Parliament centric groove. It worked. This cut rocked the joint back in time. The bigger the headache line is Parliment's from Dr Funkenstein years earlier.
Big hit in the UK. Its known as the row boat song. This comes on and you all make a line and follow the lead at the front. God knows how that originated. Try "Party Train" by the Gap Band, very funky.
The "Gap Band" & "Roger Troutman and Zapp" toured together as opening acts for Parliament/Funkadelic/Bootsy's Rubberband for 2 years. All 5 bands in one show. Wow!!
Yes, "bigger the headache..." is a Parliament phrase. This was pretty early Gap Band before they had established themselves so I assume their style was still fluid and with the Bootsy connection it is pretty safe that they would dabble here. This is pre- ("Outstanding", "Yearning for your Love", "Burn Rubber"). I agree, this along with Outstanding and Yearning is one of my GB faves.
In this song, Jack and Jill had a son. In "Humpin'" they had a son AND a daughter!! Humpin': "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack got down and Jill came around, and now they have a son AND a daughter!" I've always loved that follow up.
This was the Jam! The Gap Band proved to be talented and versatile. I love how they kept nodding towards P-Funk. Check out GAP Band: No Hiding Place and Open Up Your Mind(Wide)
This was still being played quite as far as into the 90s and beyond, as my young nephew was singing this and hooked me on it. Actually would you believe I woke up this morning with this song in my head. Just had to find it on UA-cam. You have good taste sir.
As many people have mentioned, there are plenty of P Funk (mainly Parliament) references in this song. But also, at the 9:21 mark, that instrumental vamp is taken from the Brides of Funkenstein song, " Disco to Go". (another PFunk group). It's the intro and outro of that song.
The title and chorus was very amusing to a witty and musically inclined boy back in '79 and '80. Playing any sport, whether it was basketball, punchball or stickball whenever we scored we would say, "oops upside yo head" just to taunt each other.😄
JJ yes they kind of gave tribute to Parliament Funkadelic in this song. The quotes you mention are Parliament lyrics. The bigger the headache the bigger the pill, hit me with a one, Don't believe I wanna dance is a referance to Sir Nosedevoidofunk, and the GAP radio station is a referance to WEFUNK in a Funkadelic song.
I never thought of them sounding like Parliament, Funkadelic or George Clinton. Now I do on this song only. Also reminds me of "Talking out the side of your neck" by Cameo
There's a track on his son's band album called 'Billy & Baby Gap', that also has a bit of that sound but yeah this one's def so good. The guitarist has so many tasteful melodies that they engrain into the atmosphere of that tune, i don't know who that is but big props to whoever they are!
The bigger the headache the bigger the pill was a saying from the streets. They both adopted it. Just like the Gap Band and Raydio talked about Jack and Jill.
Michael, you just infringed the copyrights of my song request list. I was going to request this song as well. This song put the Gap band on the funk map with this classic funk jam.....I never heard some of the lyrics in this version of the song.....Good song request....
Realy like zapping through your channel bringing back so much good music. Thks for that. Music was so much fresher back than. Soultrain on the dancefloor ev body partying, great times
want to hear some more Gap Band funk? well check out The Gap Band's "Talkin Back" and it go a little something like this, Oh and turn that Bass up. "One fat hen, a couple of ducks Three brown bears, four running hares Five fat Emilies Six simple Simons sittin' on a stump Seven Siamese sailors sailin' the seven seas Eight egotistical egotists" ......
The bigger the headache the bigger the pill is originally from Parliament & George Clinton. Gap Band was paying tribute to George Clinton. The rush of the instruments at the end came from Parliament also, with the Brides of Funkenstein. Check out the Brides of Funkenstein, Disco to Go! 😊
BREAKING NEWS............ FOR THOSE WHO WERE ASLEEP THIS IS STRAIGHT GEORGE CLINTON, BOOTSY COLLINS, PARLIAMENT - FUNKADELIC FROM THE START TO THE BREAK AT THE END, P FUNK ALL DAY PLUS AN HOUR......BREAKING NEWS EVERY TIME YOU HEAR THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
The bigger the headache the bigger the pill is a parliament Thang. This song came out late 1979 they was just copying off parliament they were new on the seen and now that I think of it it was there first big hit.
@@craigreed1638 it might have been a saying in the streets. The group parliament was on the seen first. and the gap band on that particular song copied there style trying to sound like them.
@@craigreed1638 who cares about the the bigger the headache the bigger the pill if it was a street thing so what. The song period is a reflection of how they were trying to sound like parliament I've always thought that about this song when it first came out. I don't care about a headache and a pill it's not about that it's about the overall song.
I'm really surprised he didn't recognize that the Bruno Mars song Up town funk was a Rip off from this Gap Band classic .You have to understand too the similarities and an have an ear for it. It's just there no question about it either way
😆😝😀 I see you tripping thinking this is P Funk. They OBVIOUSLY stole P Funk but EVERYBODY was stealing P Funk. Remember that George Duke track "Reach For It"? He BLATANTLY stole P Funk. Everybody did. P Funk created their own world and were HUGELY popular and people wanted a piece of it. These were The Pre Hip Hop Days and P Funk was the closest anybody had come before Hip Hop actually arrived. 😝😆😄 We all said the same thing you are saying now

Yes... Parliament is the foundation for hundreds of funk bands.
This is my favorite Gap Band song
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 !
This was the Gap Band's stabb at a Parliament centric groove. It worked. This cut rocked the joint back in time. The bigger the headache line is Parliment's from Dr Funkenstein years earlier.
The Gap Band was the GOAT back in the day. Charlie Wilson can still sing his butt off to this day.

Stupid Jill,
Forget her pill, and now they have a son"
Love this song, as a British guy, I remember this as a party song during my youth, but As a whole, I generally love this song.

Charlie Wilson’s cousin is Bootsy Collins. That’s why.
I never knew that!
I DON'T think that's true
It’s not true

I'd forgotten about this one -- LOVE the funky side of The Gap Band. Great reaction.
Snoop did the song and called it "Snoop's Upside Your Head". Sadly, only one member of the Gap Band is still with us.
“This funk is habit-forming”!
I love The Gap Band. They headlined the first concert I ever attended.
Another killer tune on the dance floor and skate ring
The title and chorus was very amusing to a witty and musically inclined boy back in '79 and '80. Playing any sport, whether it was basketball, punchball or stickball whenever we scored we would say, "oops upside yo head" just to taunt each other.😄

Haven't heard this in a long time. Forgot how much I like it.
Same here. ✨👍🏿🤩💫
I remember the day this track came out in 1979 I was 18 years old 😁👍🎵
Now, we need some Dr. Funkenstein and Children of Production ( from Parliament)
The whole first side with Dr. Funkenstein!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥

Some of the best out of Uncle Charlie Wilson!
Everyone was bitin’ PFunk back in the day, Cameo, ADC Band, George Duke, to name a few, but it wasn’t PFunk, Uncut Funk, The Bomb!
The bigger the headache the bigger the pill was a saying from the streets. They both adopted it. Just like the Gap Band and Raydio talked about Jack and Jill.
I haven't heard this in ages. One of my faves from Gap Band
Played this on vinyl ‘til the grooves went smooth. Great reaction!

This is the main song that Uptown Funk copied... along with Holly Rock by Sheila E and also The Time
100% Old Skool stank! This was the jam late 1979-early 1980.

A Wham feel with the Lyrics, they should have teamed up😂. A hypnotic tune..but I always hated the dance. Clubbin❤

Radio edit it better..This version's too long and repetitive.
Never
This is what makes it a Pfunk groove. All of their funk classics were very long.12 inches before 12 inch singles. You just lack understanding
