Thanks for this! What, since Hugo Ball or Artaud has begun to map this territory? What, since Rabelais or Beckett has been so encouraging? The challenge presented here is to enter one's own existence so directly, Yes, this is as good as inaudible amidst daytime noise. The vent speaks most profoundly at night.
It can be hard to listen to but he is trying something not many writers would dare to do. Mind you as an academic he can afford to do this. Would he still do this if say, he was unemployed? In any case, it is interesting.
I think that you are right to a point with ragard to monetary gains and whatnot, but having attended a York U poetry class taught by a McCaffery apprentice I'd have to suggest the idea to be a total challenge of verbal language itself. We base our entire lives on what we hear, so to feel such emotion during his readings evokes a deep questioning of what it is to listen, feel, think... To live. The obvious change in actual languages, mixed with gibberish, may be seen to challenge our readings of verbal communication. It has been said that most communication comes from non-verbal sources such as tone, inflection, mannerisms, sarcasm etc. So what I believe Professor McCaffery to be saying is that the barriers which seperate us, language being at the forefront of difference, really isn't all that different. It's all in how we perceive difference and otherness.
My uni professor sent me here to watch this for homework, lol.
Awesome poetry man I got sent here from school
Amazing performance... good to hear his interpretation in such clarity after seeing his work for the first time yesterday (thanks to Barrie Tullett).
