Sam is scion of a prominent swordmaster family who even inherited the family's sword - reforged into the red cyberblade he uses. He used to follow bushido, code of honor for the warriors, but by the point of the fight he is just a killer mercenary, serving "the enemy". He used to only fight using his body and skill - but he got a cyber arm after losing one in a fight. Although he is not a villain, he is still a shell of himself - a lost soul devoid of ideals. He is glad to challenge Raiden, because Raiden might be able to finish what Sam tried before.
That's what's up
He does have an enhancement suit but no cybernetics besides his arm (basically he was using technology that was probably older than he was at that point.)
Tbh i think he didn't lose his arm. It just got damaged badly by the stab.
@@tamas21145 Yes but for a swordsman its functionally the same.

There's another interesting detail in how the game uses this song:
Usually you won't hear the lyrics of the boss theme until phase 3 of the fight, while this one has them as long as the character is holding their sword. Considering the lyrics, this detail seems pretty fitting.
It's the same for the final boss, the lyrics only appear when you're holding the sword.

The character of Sam... I'll try not to spoil anything egregiously, but it's very much accurate to say that he's a dark counterpart to Raiden. A rival with similar ideals but standing on opposite sides when it comes to the deciding moment.

Indeed
Technically, there are two themes for the final boss, one of which you can also experience in Sam's DLC story.

*Slams Raiden’s head into the ground*
All Sam has left as for purpose is the fight. It's all he's good at, but he has nothing to fight for. He's not evil or anything. He's just a lost soul without purpose, doing the only thing he believes himself designed to do; fight. And he is actually the only character without ANY cybernetic enhancements besides his arm (which was cut off). He just dunked on Raiden as a pure man.
The cybernetic enhancement itself was kind of a nerf to Sam's skill as well, considering that he lost years of muscle memory from it being cut off.
"The weakest Brazilian male"
@@yes7819 I'm not sure I'd say that. Not only does he clearly still have the same skill, but his Iaido style of fighting is actively enhanced by that robot arm because it lets him do way more powerful draw slashes. In the first fight against Sam it shows this when the camera specifically shows his sheath shooting out the blade like a gun before the attack happens and it zooms in on his robot arm to hammer the point home. The framing is basically saying "all of these things worked in conjunction with eachother to make the attack as strong as it is".
@@dracocrusher the thing is, the time between the DLC and the main game has been a few years so it is probable that Sam practiced. Of course, this is just what I think and is probably not the answer
@@yes7819 What does any of this have to do with the game literally focusing on his robot arm when he does the slash to show how it's part of his super-slash?
Fun how you are going through the MGR songs, because all boss themes are about the backstory/background of the bosses. Essentially giving context and an explanation about their actions, which is cool because the game itself doesn't explain it to you.
Well, some of the optional CODEC calls reveal some parts of their backstory, but yes, the songs definitely provide some character
Eh sorta... I'd say they actually do a pretty good job explaining Monsoon, Sundowner, and Armstrong and then Mistral gets fleshed out in the blade wolf dlc while Sam has his own dlc that goes more in depth on his character.
@@mithras9706 i think it's not to insult the writing, it's just that you can't use all your time for backstory when the game is 5 hours long
@@diegopugaquintanilla4344 No yeah, I completely understand that, but I feel like at least with Monsoon and Sundowner it was really straightforward, plus Monsoon's theme is somewhat debatable as to who it is referring to, whether it's Raiden (the most likely answer) or Monsoon himself. The songs are good don't get me wrong, I just feel like people overlook a LOT of the dialogue and then act like the songs are the only way you can understand the character.
Sam was originally a good guy, being a vigilante with the carefree personality of Dante (from DMC). After getting defeated by Armstrong, Sam got no choice but to accept his offer to work for him. This song plays in his duel to the death with Raiden with 2 results he got in mind:
1. If he wins, he will continue carrying out Armstrong's plan to start a war in the Middle East.
2. If Raiden wins, then he will give his sword to Wolf with the hope that Raiden can actually stop Armstrong
So yeah the song says that Sam's actions are not of his choice and his original identity has been lost after his defeat to Armstrong, but in his faceoff with Raiden, he would let blood decides what happens next, hence "the only thing i know for real"
Without spoiling too much, this is actually Jetstream Sam's theme; the brazillian dude that messes Raiden up at the end of the tutorial stage lol. Only the instrumental version plays during that "fight", but their actual duel in the endgame plays the lyrical version, and it's wonderful. Sam's one of the best characters in the game, for many reasons.
Jetstream Sam is kinda like a dark reflection of Raiden, a path he could've ended up had he picked the wrong fight.
However, Sam's story is only briefly hinted at in Metal Gear Rising's main campaign. To get the full picture, you'll need to dive into the DLC.

Pretty spot on analysis. The character this theme is for, sam, is a samurai who’s obsessed with bettering himself and “sharpening his skills” seeing himself as a kind of heroic lone wolf. However, the villains of the game manage to be the first people to ever truly defeat him in a fight, so out of a combination of respect and fear he accepts their offer to work for them in exchange for the opportunity to keep fighting, but now he realizes he’s not the hero he once was
The great thing about MGR Music its that makes all boses seem like "The Final Boss" bc its Their Final battle, not raidens the music its agaist you, representing them they r not the final boss to us , but we are to them.
When you react to the final boss, he has 2 themes "Collective consciousness" at the start and then "It has to be this way" for the true final boss.
I would actually argue that Armstrong doesn't have a theme song.
"Collective Conciousness" is about the public perception on politicians like Armstrong, but it doesn't reflect his true ideals at all.
"It Has To Be This Way" is moreso Raiden's theme than Armstrong's, because it reflects Raiden's ideology after the whole game, when he's at the end of his journey. A part of Armstrong's final words ("You _carve your own path,_ use whatever methods you see fit.") also confirms that it is Raiden's theme.
Please don't spoil yourself. I know most people think Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is just a Meme game, but it does have some good story in there, with a LOT of character backstory and information in game, just hidden in codec calls.
Edit: But Please review the music from the bosses! they're all super catchy
That reminds me, in either the Mexico lab or before the BD part, can't remember which, Doktor mentions Schloss Neuschwanstein. I'm taking German II and I just had an assignment involving the castles and palaces of The Mad King, Schloss Neuschwanstein is one of those. Very cool!

The whole boss ost of this game deserves an analysis.
This is arguably Sam’s song. A song about losing yourself and giving in to just being a weapon.
"I don't have a choice" Hit the nail on the head
Pretty spot on for character analysis, if you want one that is really indepth "Hot Wind Blowing" absolutely kills it
without trying to spoil anything, "it has to be this way" is the final boss theme and it is probably the most lyrically in depth song in the ost lol, but to be fair the rest of the boss ost are nothing short of great
Potential spoilers
This song plays as an instrumental version only until your final battle with Jetstream Sam, then the lyrics add a COMPLETE 180 into how Sam’s character comes across. Until the final fight, he exudes confidence and pure charisma. When you finally read the lyrics, it’s everything but.
And when you hit his sword out of his hands the lyrics go away
@@Kodaiva that could represent either his focus or him losing himself for his blade has almost become part of himself
I think Marco eventually should have a second channel where he solely reacts to each franchise memes lol
😂
Finally, Marco is getting blessed by MGR music.
It's interesting that for other bosses the lyrics don't really start until the final phase, but for Sam they start from the beginning and go away when you knock the sword from his hand. Even more interesting that this also happens in the final fight when Raiden gets the same sword knocked from his hand.
One thing I DO actually know for real is that hearing these themes in game is honestly just incredible. The way it implements the themes in the actual games has been jokingly compared to how musical works. Despite not being quite like musicals the comparison is really interesting to me, because their purposes those of an "I am song"
And in-game they do actually have some similarities with your average musical number. The encounter starts with a dialogue between Raiden and the antagonist, a quick back and forth in which we learn a bit about how they see things or why they do the things they do, etc. Then it's showtime, an instrumental version of said antagonist's theme plays at the start (pretty epic stuff, goes well with the fight and all that)
UNTIL it reaches a point where it explodes, and the vocals come into the piece we've been hearing for a while now on loop (at least on the first time you play, but I'm getting sidetracked) which is basically SCREAMING to us why we're doing what we're doing right now (beating the shit out of each other)
It's pretty awesome, I'd say
AND this song in particular does a pretty good twist on that formula i just described. So yeah check that out too i guess idk
I love listening to you theory craft live! I've been doing this in my Genshin playthrough and while I'm wrong a lot, I'm also right sometimes, which encourages me to continue to theory craft!
Cool analysis.
The Songs are indeed sung from the perspective of the Bosses, but in many ways they reflect aspects of Raiden too. Actually, you could argue that "It Has to Be This Way" (the actual final Boss music), is actually sung from Raiden's perspective, since it uses his Main Leitmotif.
First time I played MGR, I thought that Sam would indeed be the final boss due to the anticipation for that fight and everything that you go through the game up to that point and if it ended right there, I would've been pretty satisfied, but OH BOY, there's still like 2 or 3 hours left in the game and what insane final hours those are...
"Minuano, the cold wind of Brazil" yea! I Like that!.
without the context its easy to see the misses here and there, but there's still alot that still fits the character. which shows how much the song fits the character without being literal.
Something I personally strongly associate this song with is my interpretation of the FF14 Warrior of Light. Someone too skilled for their own good, facing a great ordeal, and struggling to retain a sense of self and connect with who they've become after everything they've been through.
Baller video again man love the reaction and breakdowns I will say all the mgsrv osts are on my workout playlist
Yes! Good to see that you finally listened to it. Absolute banger. I loved the analasys, yougot his story on point!
Each character brings SO MUCH history with them, one more than others but all of them are incredible, having their own philosophy and ideias and why they do the things in their way.
first of all, spoilers ahead
sam is a character that as someone stated, is a dark counterpart to raiden, from what i know he chose to technically become a cyborg (he barely had any enhancements)
he started out as someone like raiden, fighting the "main bad guy" but he joined them after a fight with said person.

MGR's use music to take the game from a solid 7 to a 10 for me. The way they use the lyrics to convey more about the characters than the story tells you and ths timing of the music really elevates the whole experience. I look forward to you covering more of them since theres a ton to unpack from the lyrics. Great job as always
I love how in the fight blades clash in turn with lyrics. Like “there will be blood ⚔️ she’d ⚔️.

Eager to see more as I feel a lot of people don`t analyse the lyrics and even the music itself, which is crucial for MGR songs ^^ There`s so many good ones to pick from, my personal favourite would have to be Stranger I Remain.

"The man in the mirror nods his head" really sums it up perfectly. The idea that he no longer recognizes himself, and reflecting on how he's changed makes him realize that he's looking at the face of a stranger. This fits perfectly into the theme of the song, a man who doesn't remember what he was fighting for in the first place, but he fights anyway because it's the only thing he knows, the only way he knows how to live.
Also, that thumbnail was awesome!
I'm definitely looking forward to your videos on mgr's ost
Fantastic thumbnail Marco! lol
Ooh! A really interesting take on a really cool song! Thanks for sharing!
I love how you rocked out to the song
Ever listened to Patapon 1/2/3 music? That game series and it's music is a diamond in the rough (remasters are less so 'cause of some bugs, but still good). I think you might enjoy it.
The music is also dynamic, with extra vocals and sounds playing in-game based on what the player does, and what song is playing.
Each bit of music has a few stages. There's stage 0, 1, 2, then Fever Mode, and each point will change the music depending on how well the player keeps their beat.
I recommend seeing the early gameplay of Patapon 2 for a bit of context, then listening to the Instrumental tracks especially Gyorogyoro, Acchichichi/ Hot Hot Hot (desert theme), Pokkurimakka (which a really good instrumental can be heard for Patapon 3, on a level (Evilmass of Adamance) which on Floor 1 and 2 fits really well with the traps), and last: Hey Whazzat (final boss of Patapon 2, who also acts with double speed, challenging the player's rhythmic mindset along with music that is so chaotic yet somehow melodic.)
And if you're fine with spoilers, watch the boss fights of Patapon 2, and Patapon 3's Evilmass of Adamance level (Floor 1 and 2 only). You'll hear the dynamic aspects kick in, and it's great.
Just one last thing to note: Videos with instrumentals and gameplay vary in quality. A range of "Instrumental" videos include the dynamic audio too, but that's not a good representation without gameplay with the dynamic audio.
And gameplay can potentially be brute-forced, especially stunlocking Patapon 2's final boss or just nuking things so fast you don't get to listen to the music enough.
Jesus christ, these are some REALLY GOOD thumbnails you have!
