- Welcome back to Gear & a Beer, where I talk about homebrew gear while drinking a home brewed beer. This week I'm drinking my Session Stout and we're looking at the Tilt Hydrometer.

I liked this format so much better. The honest review of a product purchased yourself. The simplicity of the 'conversational' theme. Seemed more human. Thanks.
That's the interesting thing about youtube, people seem to be more drawn to the more "human" videos. The fact that he's even willing to talk on video is further than I'd be willing to go lol
Thanks guys! Sometimes extra production starts to feel like a commercial I think. I appreciate the feedback 🤘🏼🍻
Good honest review in both the Tilt and the Beer.
It's nice having a local brewtuber. I enjoyed taking a look into your process and troubleshooting. Cheers!
I love the style of this video. Showing more of your knowledge, showing the beersmith recipe even and how you'd adjust it, that's awesome. Keep em coming man, you're killing it!
Thanks man! Stoked you liked it!
I love my Tilts, use them solely (no hydrometer). One of them quick reading properly after I had it for over a year and A quick call to Tilt and they replaced it no questions asked. Loved the new style video man, keep em coming.
Nice review. And I so like the sound stage 👍
Dope new format. Keep going 🤟🤟🤟 cheers from Brazil
I love my tilt , great product . Going to get more . Love the show !!!cheers 🍻
The best feature is that the Tilt data easily can be integrated in Brewfather. Excellent with the graphics together with the other batch information.
I like this one keep them coming
Awesome! Stoked you liked it!
Love the videos man
I use an iSpindel that I built and it works well. I find that different beers will affect the initial reading, but I'm able to compensate the offset in Brewfather. And also high krausen will affect it as well. But, I mainly use it to know when fermentation is done when it flatlines for a few days. Also, I really love your videos. They're very informative and professionally done. Thank you.
Love my tilts. Mine have been dead on accurate. High krausen messes with it, but goes away. I still use just to monitor fermentation to make sure it's on track
This was one of the best pieces of equipment I got! I swear I’ll get a whole fleet of them one day.
Liked the video for sure 👌
Great review, and super useful as i am looking to get one of these myself! Also, great breakdown on the beer! I really like the way you structured this.
Thanks man! I’m this far into it and this is the first video where I’m talking while filming lol. I appreciate the feedback!
Thanks
This is my next brew house addition, you can integrate the Tilts data into BrewFather (Brewing App) it’s the best software I have used 👌
nice looking brew, cheers 🍺🍻
I need to check out the BrewFather integration! Sounds like a perfect solution
@@HopsANDgnarly I’ve tried a few different brewing softwares, never met it’s match! It’s free for the first few brews (10 I think) it’s the real deal 🤩🍻 happy to send you a recipe to see it 😂🍻👌
Came here to say this. Brewfather integration is the only way to go! Keeps your recipes, brew stats, and fermentation data all in one place.
@@suburban_brewer 👌🍺🍻
Haha I was literally doing research on these last night
Great review, I was just looking into getting a few Tilts.
For coffee beans it's great to use the entire bean because the center of the bean is the least roasted, which also makes it more acidic. You don't want your stout to taste sour, and usually people add a little baking soda to bring the pH up to 5.6 at the end of the mash to prevent that, so by using the entire bean you get more of the roasted flavors on the outside of the bean and less of the acidic flavors in the center, which is perfect. Coffee also adds a decent amount of oils, which kill the head. :/ I just add a bunch more wheat and flaked oats to help with that and make it creamier.
Also, toast your cocoa nibs in the oven for a few minutes on low heat to bring out more flavor. It'll make your house smell like brownies. It's a much richer cocoa flavor - you'll know it when you smell it! I've also found adding some nibs at the end of the boil and then adding some again in secondary give slightly different flavors. It has to do with how some of the chemicals isomerize in the hot wort and the flavors better integrate into the beer. It's the same reason hops are added at different points in the process to get slightly different results.
Sorry if I post a lot of info. I've been researching these things meticulously for about 10 years and found all these little tricks that, like you say, can turn a good beer into a great beer.
Ahh I didn’t suspect the coffee for poor head retention. That makes sense! I’ll never turn down information. Thanks for being cool about it and sharing with all of us 🤘🏼🍻
If I spent that amount of money I'd want the device to actually replace regular hydrometer sampling and not only reduce its frequency. My hydrometer is cheap though and I believe the reading process with it always had an accuracy comparable to the Tilt. So I guess it would do the job for me!
Appreciate the review on the Tilt, I have the same one (Orange). I find it super cool to share my brews progress with my Dad who's half a world away and also the original Homebrewer in our family, so that's worth the extra $ to me :)
Haven't brewed with molasses before but I have used honey/table syrup in smaller amounts and I'd imagine it would help dry out the beer a bit more instead of contributing to much flavour? What was the final gravity?
Dig the new format too, cheers 🍻
is it available in france? I might use this instead of the ispindel
Nice job and don't forget to delete the old calibrations before doing a new calibration as I've had this impact my readings and once I caught this I haven't had any real issues. I currently have 5 and love them but always comparing to a tested physical hydrometer makes me feel better about the readings as I trust no one device especially fresh out of the box. Also pressure fermentation will give you inaccurate readings due to the pressure and of course the carbonation created from the pressure fermentation.
Have you tried to use the tilt while fermenting under pressure? Curious to know if it would be affected
Next time I use pressure I’ll try it out!
The price is the only thing keeping me from purchasing the tilt
All else aside very much prefer this video format, feels more real
Thanks man!
How the heck did you get the Tilt discounted?
The sales team told me that no one is doing discounts. They stated it is price controled, or whoever the propper term is.
Bought it used from another brewer
I think the link to brew day is wrong in the description!
Thanks for the heads up! I think I fixed it and here’s the correct link ua-cam.com/video/yByJJC9KpqQ/v-deo.html
