- Welcome to V.B.S. Episode 7 -- Virtual Boat Shopping for our dream Great Loop boat. Today we are looking at a 2002 Carver 570 to see if we want to add it to our Yes! No! or Maybe? list of potential boats to purchase to do the Great American Loop. Big thanks to Joshua Hughes and Steven Mack for both sending us the exact same recommendation! This is a great yacht option.

I do canvas and upholstery and one of my clients has this boat. I spent 10 days aboard because the owner offered to let me stay there while vacationing, but I didn't leave the dock as I was just using it as a place to sleep. The one thing that did stand out to me was the poor lower helm visibility that you also mentioned. It had biege upholstery and darker cherry wood interior. I imagine it would rock about quite a bit in rough water. I really like the galley, salon and mid cabin.
It looks like this is the first Carver Voyager you are looking at ... The difference between the 530 and the 57 or the 56 is the size of the saloon, master bedroom storage space and the size of the fly-bridge (no grille on the 530). on this 57, the kitchen appears to be the original, the counter top was originally this size. The couch is an original Carver couch and very comfortable. The master bedroom has lots of storage (not a hobbit door) and one of the best master bedroom I've seen on a boat of this size ... The bunk bed room has room for storage but not much. Outside, there are supports to grab above the port and starboard windows ... Standing in the pilothouse, we have good visibility (I'm 6'1 ''). That said, if you visit the boat, She will make the same mistake again ... She will fall in love with the boat for the wrong reasons, again ... You will not find such a classy yacht at this price, flashing, flashing ... Perfect for the Great Lakes, not for the sea. For a sailor who is not seasick, this is a magnificent boat. To avoid seasickness, I think you would be better off with a trawler, a Viking can be a good option too... The Carver is in my opinion a great boat and probably one of the most comfortable at the dock ...
Thank you! 😎
The 53’ has 3 state rooms. It’s just 4’ shorter. Which in your alls needs that 4’ may be needed with your kiddos. We have Teddy (a Golden Doodle 60lbs) and Doogie a small guy. I like the lay out of these Carevers. I don’t know if you know but Carver makes a 53’ and 57’ where the lower helm isn’t there, just the fly bridge helm. That are really is purposed for an entertainment area (a Flat screen is above the starboard door. That area could be an area for your painting studio, lots of light and out of the way of regular foot traffic.
That’s such great info to know for our search. Thanks Wendy and have fun with your fluffy crew!
We are looking @ the 53' Carver Voyager and other Carevers. Sam and Rev (they have a blog), they are doing the loop a second time in their Carver 504.
We LOVE Sam and Rev!!! Hope your hunt goes well! Does the 53' have three staterooms?
I am thinking of buying a Carver 560 to navigate in the Caribbean, I am not of the opinion that the Carver has no place at sea (especially if you are sailing near the coast). I have worked as an officer on the Caribbean (rescue) and am very comfortable in sea. I just believe that there are more stable boats and that if you are a little fragile at sea, Carver is not the best option. (Sorry, English is not my first language)
Congratulations on your near purchase! That is very exciting. Your statement is very well said and we will keep it in mind from an expert. Your English was great by the way. Thanks for the comment and please keep us informed of your progress.
Wonder if both walk around are the same size or is one bigger than the other.
Good question. Looked to be symmetrical.
I vote for a Fleming
😎
I commissioned a Fleming 58. It’s being built ask we speak. I should take delivery next Spring. Breaking her in next summer & fall and starting the Loop in the spring of ‘23
@@rogerharrison7609 starting to look at a used 55. There just aren’t any available. Covid.
@@chriswoodward6946 yes used Flemings are hard to find. Covid is a factor, but they don’t stay on the market long. Half the time they are sold as soon as they hit the market. Have you tried Fleming of Canada?
@@rogerharrison7609 trying to stick with Burr, won’t be serious until next fall
Thinking about your dislikes about this boat Fleming yachts sound like the perfect fit for you. Check them out
Thanks! We’ve looked at two Flemings. Kids bunk cabin is REALLY small in the 55. There is a used storm damaged one for sale currently. Thanks for watching!
Fleming was a our first episode check it out.

One big drawback to this boat is the Volvo engines. The Volvo engines require only Volvo parts and Volvo certified mechanics to work on them. There is a shortage of Volvo repair facilities on the loop route. If you need service or repair, it will be expensive.
Great to know! Thank you so much for the intel!
Hey Roger! Curious about your thoughts on Viking boats with Detroit Diesel 8VS92’s?
@@TheBoomershines I like Viking boats. As a matter of fact, I have a 75 footer for sale. I’m downsizing to a new Fleming 58. That being said, Vikings are primarily Sport Fishers or Sport Fishers converted to live aboards. As far as the Detroit Deisels, they are great engines but DD is no longer in the Marine market so parts will soon become hard to come by. In my opinion, I’d go with either Cummins, Caterpillar, or Mann. For the older boat that you are looking for, Cat is the way to go.
If have not, you should join AGLCA. We are doing the loop on a Meridian 459. Because of Covid-19 we stopped at Annapolis & the boat is on the hard. We will cross our wake this year in Michigan unless something else happens. If you are interested in a Carver 570, we met the Stein family who own one & have completed 1 loop +. They also have 2 kids on board. The boats name is Have Another Day, and they have a blog that might be useful for you to read. They also took the boat to the Bahamas. You are not crossing oceans doing the Loop. The Carvers, Meridians, Sea Rays, etc are perfectly adequate for your intended use and won’t break the bank the way Hatteras, Selene, Fleming....might. If you intend to start the Loop 3/22 I would suggest settling on a boat sooner rather than later. You are looking @ boats that are much larger than you are used to handling and you both need to learn the new boat. There are always things that need to be modified or added or worse repaired on a “new to you” boat and that takes time.
@@richselo9007 Thanks Rich! Yes! We are AGLCA members for a few years and we met the Steins at the AGLCA Looper Lifestyle event in Chicago 2019. Great people.
She seems a little too tall for her beam being so small. Seems like she’s a roller.
Good point!

Love the livability but not a fan of this boat
Oh please no...
Oh no what??? The boat? Please let us know. Inquiring minds want to know:)
@@TheBoomershines Apologies for being cryptic.. the observations you made about pilothouse visibility are spot on. We sold a 53 Skylounge without the lower helm and the VIS. from the flybridge was poor as well, being all the way on the port side, hard to dock on STBD. Boat is totally flat bottomed, no keel. Blows around. Ruggedly built hull, I've been told. Have a video somewhere...
