As a mother of an autistic child, I took a completely different message from The Wild Robot. It was about overcoming odds, creating relationships, bridging difficult gaps, belonging in a world that doesn't seem to be made for you, and the meaning of community, and how we can choose to exclude or include others, and how we forge our own destiny. I suspect the author intentionally chose the passive voice. Per the University of Toronto, the passive voice is used when the person or thing being acted upon is more important than the doer, or when the doer is unknown, irrelevant, or unimportant. The protagonist is a robot, designed to adapt to fit the needs of its handlers, and the passive voice matches the nature of the protagonist. And yet, Roz so often seems to transcend the natural limits of her programming, and thrives against all odds, as does her adopted son. I really feel like you missed on the central messages and themes of this book.
That being said, I liked a lot of the other titles which you mentioned, several of which were some of my childhood favorites as well. Good luck on your future literary journeys.

While I wasn't keen on reading aloud The Wild Robot, it was PERFECT for my new reader (then 8) to read aloud to ME.

Great list! We were engrossed in The Wilderking Series when our spot at the library came up for The Wing Feather Saga so we will have to try it again sometime bc ppl are always talking about it.
I always finish my reads outloud with the Librivox recording “This has been a Librivox recording, all recording are in the public domain…” it cracks the kids up.

I am reading “The Hobbit” to my almost 10-yr-old. We are about halfway through it. I am also reading “The Tale of Despereaux” to my 7-yr-old. Great books, both! My almost- 10-yr.-old read “The Wild Robot” and “The Wild Robot Escapes” to herself and she loved then! She also just finished “Keeper of the Lost Cities” she devoured that book, she read all 488 pages of it in just under a week!

I love that you were bugged by simple sentences! Lol!! I notice those things too....especially when it’s very WELL written with description and vocabulary.
You seem like you’d enjoy IEW for writing. Have you ever looked at it? Or are you only brave writer? I’ve never looked at that but I know Sarah Mackenzie loves both. 😉

I did NOT use any book list this year and we read randomly. We read 12 chapter books and 80 picture books. I am just going to mention a few of our Chapter book Read alouds. For context, I have an 8 yr. Old, 6 yr. Old, and 3 yr. Old:
We have been reading "The Imagination Station" book series as Read alouds. The children love them but I personally find the text simple and thus annoying to read. I have enjoyed some of the plots. We read five or so of this series. I continued as the kids really really like them. So win for them.
We also read, "The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure" by Robert Arthur (It is a part of "The Three Investigators" series). It was a win for both kids and mom. It was very engaging.
We lOVED the "Raggedy Ann Stories" by Gruelle and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by Lewis, and "Maybelle in the Soup" by Katie Speck
Other stories we read aloud that they liked but I found less enjoyable to read aloud though I liked the story:
    "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen
"20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne (we read the Great Classics Illustrated edition)

These are GREAT books! I haven't heard of some of them. We loved the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe a couple of years ago. It's been fun to read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader this summer. :) Thank you for taking the time to share!

These were such great reads! Im so glad you said that about the Wingfeather Saga. I am loving it more than the kids but we will keep going! We did Pippi along with the Hearth Magic Unit for it and my kdis loved it so much we started The Secret Garden one she has. We read frequently but they seem to have even more enthusiasm to hear the story when they are waiting for the fun thing we will do like I pacled thwm a lunch too eat outsode when Mary travelled to the moors.

LOVE Mr. Popper's Penguins. I could read that one over and over again. The Wild Robot has some interesting ideas in it for sure. I have a love/hate relationship with that one based on the values in it. I've always wondered about the Wingfeather series. The Christian heroes series is really good. Our library sometimes gets the audiobooks in and we love them. We're in book #3 of the Green Ember series. Very good.

Thanks for some new ideas! I'm wanting to do some Thornton Burgess read alouds for sure. I may be the only one but I have zero interest in the Wild Robot. I don't like passive voice as much either, and I worry about the transhumanism agenda, which is not what you didn't like but just something I am trying to avoid.
