We all love the sahabahs equally, specially the top 10 sahabahs. But no doubt most people out of 100 would have 'Umar (RA) as their favourite. I like all 4, inspire me, my favourites are all 4, but some are little more than others, just a personal liking of their thigs they did, how they lead a warrior life and did great things for the ummah. Umar (ra), Uthman (ra), Khalid bin Walid (ra), my favourites. Abu Bakr As Siddiq (ra) is above them all companions, but the life of the 3 favs I mentioned intrigues and inspire me the most out the sahabahs.
I heave heard from Mufti Menk, in one of his videos, the story of the baby of Umar (RA). He said that the Prophet (SAW) had talked to him about the baby and asked if he did not feel any regret when he buried the child. Just repeating what I have heard. It could be a false story that is being perpetuated. The evidence against it, quoted here, is very enlightening.

Why did Umar صَوْسَلَّم used to curse his mother (Suhaj) all the time? ليت أُمُ عمر( صُهاج ذات الرايه) لم تلد عمر ليتها كانت عقيمه. In translation: "I wish that the mother of Umar (Suhaj) never gave birth to Umar, I wish she (Suhaj) was infertile." Was this the Sunna?
+Ibn Abi Qahafa was terrorist-- See Umar was one of very few people who was given birth to by his mother as well as his grandmother. Suhaj was actually the mother of Khatab, one of Umar's fathers. Then Khatab got married to his biological mother Suhaj. So in reality, Suhaj is Umar's grandmother. It is a little bit complicated.
+Ray Man-- Not true you Rafidhi. Umar صَوْسَلَّم never used to say this when he was sober. Umar صَوْسَلَّم never ever used to mention his mother when he was sober. Umar صَوْسَلَّم only used to curse his mother at night after he had few sips of wine. This reminds me of the summer nights when I was living in Azamia, close to Abu Hanifa, in Baghdad, Iraq, back in the seventies. At nights while sleeping on the roofs, you could hear drunkard Iraqis cursing their mothers or the day they were born left and right.
+Ibn Abi Qahafa was terrorist-- Du you have any Sanad that Umar (رُض عنقه) used to get drunk? To the contrary, Umar (رُض عنقه) used to punish those who get drunk. According to Musanaf ibn abi Shaibeh, one day a man was travelling with Umar (رُض عنقه) and he dank from Umar's (رُض عنقه) leather pouch and ended up getting drunk and past out. Thefollowing morning, Umar (رُض عنقه) applied the Had on this man. When this man complained that he only drank what was in the pouch that was belong to Umar (رُض عنقه). Umar (رُض عنقه), in essence, said that I didn't punish you for drinking the wine, I punished you because you drank so much to the point of getting drunk. This man obviously needed to be taught a good lessen from Umar (رُض عنقه). Now as far as the reason caused Umar (رُض عنقه) to curse his mother, my theory is that it was his anal disorder. Whenever Umar' (رُض عنقه) anus used to flare up, Umar (رُض عنقه) used to get in so much pain and he will need to have someone eject him with male fluid. In situations like these Umar (رُض عنقه)used to curse his mother Suhaj.
But ibn Suhaj never quit cursing his mother. It is well documented that he used to curse his mother till the day he died. Well, you are right. Ibn Suhaj died drunk anyway.

As far as the verse ( الَّذِينَ يَتَّبِعُونَ الرَّسُولَ النَّبِيَّ الْأُمِّيَّ) Umi here is from Um al-Qura and it could also mean Umami, or Universal. illiteracy, anyway you look at, is a handicap, period.
