New Year’s Eve 16 degrees breaking ice to fish holes on lake weiss in the jet boat. Bobby garland electric chicken. Forget the rod watch your line. Slightest twitch set the hook.. we’ve caught 100+ in 3 hours. Majority being over 1lb. I don’t love fishing enough to do it that cold but it has been worth it every time I have. Doesn’t compare to the spring run
Also just like to add this series has been awesome! I’ve been very interested in trying to start mounting deer myself just haven’t been able to get the right space to do it. But I been practicing caping deer on my skull mount deer. And also have a slight mentor. Interesting to see the differences in processes
can we see an example of the invoice/ contract you use? Next season I’m going legit and just would like an idea of what I definitely need on the contract and order form. Thanks for all you do. You’ve single handedly been my instructor through UA-cam and I’ve learned so much thank you!
Up here in southern Minnesota, the crappie hit best for me with live minnows. Get yourself an ultralight rod and have some fun! I love your videos. I'm registering my taxidermy business after the 1st of the year. I still work a normal job at the moment. As soon as I get too much work to keep the job I'm taking the leap. There are several taxidermists in the area retiring in the next few years. All the taxidermists I know are booked out a year or better.
I’ve been binging your vids! I’m getting my first 2 shoulders done this year (one’s in my profile pic) and you do a great job on your videos explaining and walking through the whole process! Merry Christmas!
I really like the ears forward not tucked back all my grandpas mounts are like that one behind you and I see alot of mounts ears tucked back I'm not a fan of that.
Got another question. Is it acceptable to thaw a frozen deer hide by submerging it in cool water or should you let it thaw by just setting it out? Thanks!
follow up to my question. I’ve been letting two completely frozen hides sit outside. Temps are 35-45. One sat all night and neck meat is still frozen solid but some of the thinner stuff starting to thaw. How long would you leave it?
I have a hide from a buck that I killed in November and want to try and mount myself. I have watched a ton of your videos and some I have watched several times, but I think I’m missing on what the process is before the pickle. What do I do to the hide before putting it in the pickle. It was caped and taken to a taxidermist in Missouri before bringing it back to Georgia to have the skull capped and the hide off of the head and he folded up and sealed in a bag and it’s in the freezer now.
It has to be fleshed, the lips, eyes, and nostrils turned, and salted overnight. Then soaked in water for 30 minutes or so to rehydrate and then put in the pickle
I only spend about 2 hours per hide on tanning and the whole process only takes a week. Aside from the high cost of a tannery vs. tanning myself, the turnaround is typically 6 months to a year so if I send a cape off the day I get it opening day of bow season, best case scenario I’ll see it again in April and could take till October. Start to finish only takes 3 weeks per deer, so I’ll be done before most taxidermists get half their hides back.
Not sure if your comfortable talking numbers in the videos, but If i heard right, you cut off taking deer in at 100 for the season. Is there a way you can discuss cost to mount a deer/ vs labor, and how the profit looks for a season and why you hit the cutt off at 100? If not, I totally get it, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Maybe you can discuss the topics without providing specific numbers. It must have been more profitable than processing deer. Hope you and your family enjoy a Merry Christmas!
It is way more profitable than processing, and I charge 6-700 depending on the mount. I could do about 200 a year of if I didn’t hunt and fish all the time, but I cut off to make sure I have all the time I want and can still finish my work in a year’s turnaround time (I hunt and fish a LOT). Also, from a salary standpoint my social media, my books, merchandise, classes, custom fishing rods, and affiliate sales make up more of my yearly pay than the deer heads 👍
@@thecedarridgechronicles thanks for taking the time to answer that. I kept doing the math, thinking....there is no way he's able to make a living off just the taxidermy with those numbers...LOL. Merry Christmas. Oh...and I look forward to the videos of the offshore fishing in the upcoming season.
i’ve really thought about starting taxidermy absolutely love hunting its my passion i’ve also always had a artistic passion i’ve made and painted replica glide baits and am a perfectionist for detail if you was in my shoes im 19 would you start, how would you start, and is it realistic to make a living off of or do you sub out some work when not busy? thank you!
I wish I had started at 19. All you have to do is save a cape and start practicing. It’s really easy once you get a feel for the process. I turn down as much work as I take in and it pays well.
@ thanks i just watched the quit your job video and how to be successful had no clue you had those definitely gonna give it a shot here soon once i get another good one

How would you do a pack mount on a doe? How would you alter the form to wear you don’t use horns? Could you do a video please
Use only the head from a doe form that has the same measurements 👍
Merry Christmas !

Definitely set it out. Water will cause slippage

Honest question. Why do you tan your own animals? Do you think it’s worth the time over spending the money at the tannery?
