Nick, Thanks so much for taking the time to explain your process. I really wish I could see lessons on how you put your model together from the start. You have the most impressive, detailed residential drawings I have ever seen. I hope to be as good as you one day. Any other videos would be greatly appreciated on creating the original model.
Stupendous! I want to confirm that I'm following the logic: making the Section Cut into a Component creates the new lines that make your line work. Because they are saved on a separate layer, they can be turned off when you don't wan't to see them. I was afraid that editing the component would change the base model, but because these are new lines that you did not draw to begin with, you are just erasing the new line not your model. Brilliant! THANK YOU
Great...I was working on a hotel tower last year and I was using sketchUp and Layout... It was really hard, too much time spent...But, now I feel I could make it better and faaaaaaaster... Thank you very much that was greaaaat !!!
Thanks Chad. I've been pretty swamped with work this year, but I'll try and give it a shot this winter. Most of these projects in these videos are now in construction with a couple almost finished. They keep me pretty busy.
Fantastic, what I have been looking for for quite a while now. I have been wanting to make the switch to full Sketchup construction documents. Perhaps now I will invest the time and do so. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge Nick!
Thanks for sharing your workflow!! As a student it's a huge gap between what you do for projects and what's actually required to produce working drawings! I started using sketchup for the first time yesterday. Now I'm super excited to learn it!!! Excellent! Grazie Mille!!!
Great real-time presentation warts and all... Too often you just get something polished so well that you actually don't learn as much. the doorjamb selection problem & autosave glitches were great as this is what REALLY happens while drawing. Little questions and problems being solved along the way. I still use my free Sketchup just for design phase, as clients love it and I can be really loose and quick. You now have me considering chucking my Autocad and using Sketchup accurately... Thanks!
Wow, one can always lean something new. Thank you Nick for sharing this amazing video series with the community. BTW, you totally sound like the President.
Thank you for helping us'm learning a lot from you. I am Brazilian and watch your videos with great difficulty, because I do not speak English very well, however I use the "SU" in the English version, which helped me. But thank you again for providing part of their time to help naked. Just a suggestion: if possible subtitles for videos in their lessons would be a marvel. Thanked!
Nick, Great work and I am in complete agreement with keeping it simple. Thats why we embraced SU. I have seen a number of "experts" create extremely complex layering / scene systems for linking to Layout and it seems they have just ported over their autocad mentality to SU. Thank God Autodesk didn't get their hands on SU when it was a startup.
Great videos Nick, I keep coming back. There is so much information here that it takes a few reviews to get it. Very nice workflow. Keep posting I really enjoy watching Best
Marla you have it basically correct. You create the line work from the section by choosing "create group from slice". You then set that group on its own layer. These slices can be created in any of the referenced model. In fact, this is the main reason that I create multiple reference models. If I didn't I'd end up with 30 or so sections in a single model, which becomes a little sloppy.
Mechanical Works, I've never had issues with PC's and SU. In fact, the PC I use in the live Basecamp demonstration is a 3 year old $500 off the shelf HP Laptop. My main machine in this video is a higher end HP. You are correct with the gaming machines though. They work really well, mainly due to the high end graphics cards. I love Macs, but the equivelant machine is 2X the PC price.
SketchUp is so simple that my sister is now totally into learning it, even though she has no interest in architecture or design. And it has a huge bonus of being free for the most part (so the people can try it out before buying). I mean I've worked in C4D, 3DMax, Maya, Rhino and AutoCAD and the sole limitation (disability even) of that software is that you have to purchase it to try or learn it, and costs a lot too...
Hello! That "force field thing" is a feature that comes with any tablet device. Be it pen and tablet, touch screen etc. From the looks of it, he is using a Wacom product. That occours when you hold the pen down on the tablet in one spot for a second. This can be programmed to do multiple things. Usually it just acts as a right click! Hope this helps! :)
There is a touch pad that allows you to slide up to zoom in and reverse for zoom out. The Intuous Touch series allows you to do hand gestures on the tablet similar to an Ipad.
Increase the brightness and contrast when you go to print. I print only the permit sets in color and all the others are black and white. Once you get the right setting it works really well.
Mr. Sonder, May I suggest, when you are drawing your model's interior trim work place it in a separate layer. Then turn off this layer before copying to do your line work it may save some time for you. Matthew Halsey
Thanks, I use only MOVIER to download the video to UA-cam or another website. But once DOWNLOAD this video in HD, but not fused and try 3 times. But now I will do what you said. Thank you man I can download it now. I hope that fuses.
Nick great stuff and lov the tutorials>> have one question do you use outliner?? and if not wouldnt outliner work better and faster then layers?? I myself use sketchup for my 3d models while using autocad architecture 2012 for my cad files after seeing ur wrk it might be something to consider in just doing 95% of it in skup..ps what size LG is that? and what graphics video card do you use..Agin txs for the tutorials and nice designs..gvazquez

Nick, i am an italian architect and i work in big projects as stadiums, airports, bridges etc. I use sketchup to better communicate concepts, ideas, details to client, but now i would like to start to use layout for final construction documentation. The problem is that clients request me always pdf and dwgs at the end of the day. Your tecnique to overlay a vector line work on raster model is fantastic because when i export a drawing in dwg the process is very quick considering that my models, like your models, are very big. What do you do, if you have to export an elevation view or a roof plan where you don't have a section line work that you can render "vector" quickly? thanks in advance for your support and many compliments for your work!

Great video, puts my 3 rooms to shame :) I am trying to us Section Plane a single room, but every time I click it, it will expand to Section my entire house and everything in the file, not just the one room I am wanting to Section. How do you section plane only a certain part of your model?
Nick, thank you so much for sharing these amazing, comprehensive lessons on creating working drawings using SketchUp! I have enjoyed using SketchUp in various capacities over the years, and have equally learning all over again from your videos. Thank you for the very informative video series. When you work with remodel projects how do you graphically show for construction documents the items to be demolished distinct from items to remain and likewise what portion of the building is existing and what is new?
Great videos Nick. I wanted to ask you about plug-ins. Which are must haves and just good additions, or which ones to stay away from? Also, if your do any photo realistic renderings, what do you use?
+Roberto Samarron believe it or not, I use very few plug-ins. Tigs Section Cut Face - that's really it. All of my process utilizes native SU. For rending I use LumenRT which is the best I have used, especially the incredible speed in which it produces both renderings and animation.
+Nick Sonder What about custom materials? I was noticing some stonework on one of your models, but didn't seem to find a comparable material in the native SU list; and the one I did find was very pixelated at the size I needed it.
Hi Nick, Great video. I like your work! I noticed that you are using a stylus and pad. Questions: Do you use this to do all of your sketchUp drawings? Is this your prefered method and why? Would you recommend a beginner like myself in using one? Lastly, What model / brand and where to purchase? Also do you strictly use SketchUp to generate your drawing plans or do you use it in conjunction with AutoCAD or some other drawing program? Thank you for your time, Larry
Hi Larry, I use a Wacom Intuous tablet and pen. I use it for everything. I don't use a mouse anymore. I do all my work in Sketchup and Layout. I stopped using ACAD in 2006 or so after using it for about 20 years.
Hi Nick, Thank you for getting back to me. I appreciate what you do and how you accomplish it. I have done commercial architecture and high end residential for about 26 years. I am looking to change it up. Your work makes it look fun.
I use a $500 dlrs Dell Desktop and a lenovo $400+ laptop they both work excellent with files over 20 mb. I have use Mac's also, same deal just different taste. :)
Great work and great video! When making your sketchup model, however, are you not drawing to finish? Then if you make a line drawing from the finish thickness of walls, how are you then dimensionless accurately to framing? Thanks.
I agree. I dimension to framing, but I guess my question is not clear. How do you dimension to framing when your line work is generated from the model, which has the finish added to the wall thickness?
+Lee Van-Binh OK, good question! I do not model interior finish materials on walls so it always represents the frame. When sizing spaces this is always taken into consideration given the finish. As an example if I want a space to be 2'-0" clear like a closet, I add the thickness of the wall finish material to the depth of the space so 2'-1". Finishes I do show are things like trim, wainscotting, paneling, furring, but never the drywall. This way I can always snap a dimension to a stud face which is the most important info for the contractor.
Terimakasih.
Hi Nick, Nice big display you have there, mind if you tell me what kind of LG display you use? and whether that LG display is color correct IPS monitor? (above 100%, 100% or almost 100% sRGB color render capable)
Hi Nick, thanks for the great videos. I have a plan dimensioning question. When you build your Sketchup model are your wall thicknesses just framing, or finish to finish? If finish to finish, when you cut your plan section do you make adjustments to the plan linework to bring it to face of framing, before bringing it into Layout? ... Thanks.
Historic Home Plans Always dimension to framing. You should never dimension to the finish as the home is built to framing and finishes are applied to the framing.
+Nick Sonder Thanks for answering, Nick. I didn't phrase my question well. I know that dimensioning should be done to the frame. So, when you build your model, do you model both the frame AND the exterior finishes? Take an extreme example, a framed wall with a 4" stone exterior veneer and some chunky wood trim inside. Your final wall thickness could end up 10-12" with 2x6 framing inside. Do you model all of that in Sketchup so that you can "snap" your dimension marks to the framing rather than the finish surfaces? One last question... Have you published a book with your system described? I'd like to buy one if it's available.
Hi Nick, A question about linework please. Made a component out of a coloured-in section group slice, made sure that was in the same plane as the section in SketchUp. However, the pasted linework component comes in at the wrong angle and not coloured in Layout. Any ideas please?
Hi Nick, I have been going through all your 'PROCESS' videos and found them really helpful. I do have one question about the making plans. I 'create group from slice', vectored the plan in layout and change all the line work but now when it comes to making changes like moving a window 1ft over, does that means that I would have to re'create group from slice' or is there an easier way? I would imagine that once anything is vectored, you would have to step back and follow those steps again.
Question 2: I work in the film industry and use sketchup and layout for Con docs. our large format printers only print black and white so i tend to avoid using colour as the prints can become muddy and unreadable. do you have any tips for producing crisp black and white textures such as brick, roof slate, tiles etc. I would love to mail you some of my hand drafting to better explain the kind of effect I am after if this would be ok let me know. obviously you are a busy man so I understand if no
Thanks for the great video. One question: how do you draw in the Line work the objects which are not cut by the section plane. Do you redraw all of them? (e.g. the stairs, the teraces)
I have a few questions that I am hoping you can answer if you have time. 1: I notice you are using a PC, I use a Mac and on the Mac version of Layout my trays are floating in space, I spend a lot of time just moving them out of the way, minimising them or closing and reopening them. I see on your videos that you have your trays permanently docked to the right hand side with their own side bar for navigating around them. is this only available on PC versions - how did you set this up?
there's no problem to put trays in a stack on a mac (riming!) i do it all the time, and have ± the same result as nick ( i mean, i'am working on it... :-) it's nice to be an arQiteKt working with sketchup that way !
Heya, The best outcome that I have ever had was with Pats super plan (i found it on google) Without a doubt the most useful woodworking plans that I have ever used.
My main concern is that our consultants still just use Autocad, STAAD and similar "traditional" programs. How do I make it easy for them to use our files that are generated with this method?
I don't use this method anymore. The purpose at the time was to get all the linework in one group so you could get it to close. I now use a plug-in that does that all in one step.
What plug-in did you use now exactly? P.s. I absolutely love your method: your book for me has been a true game changer. Never look back to nightmare's jurassic CAD drafting anymore, and I can't thank you enough, sir.
What an incredible resource! Thank you, Nick, for documenting your work flow and process!

Nice display. Check out Sharp's 32" 4K IGZO LCD monitor. Major lust factor, and great for work like this.

How does the graphic table you are using work with Zooming please?
Question 2:
I work in the film industry and use sketchup and layout for Con docs. our large format printers only print black and white so i tend to avoid using colour as the prints can become muddy and unreadable. do you have any tips for producing crisp black and white textures such as brick, roof slate, tiles etc. I would love to mail you some of my hand drafting to better explain the kind of effect I am after if this would be ok let me know. obviously you are a busy man so I understand if no
very nice job
¡I LOVE THIS PROGRAM!
Hello Nick , can I ask what are the specs on your computer ?
there's no problem to put trays in a stack on a mac (riming!)
i do it all the time, and have ± the same result as nick ( i mean, i'am working on it... :-)
it's nice to be an arQiteKt working with sketchup that way !
How many time you spent to make this artwork?
I have a question that I hope you can answer- I noticed when you click theres like a mini forcefield! How do get that? Oh and Im using mac.
Awesome!
Actually Paddotk, @last software developed Sketchup and Google purchased it from @last several years after it was released.
OMG very nice house
What pad and stylus are you using?
Heya, The best outcome that I have ever had was with Pats super plan (i found it on google) Without a doubt the most useful woodworking plans that I have ever used.
did you use only sketchup to do this house?
What stylus and pad is he using?
My main concern is that our consultants still just use Autocad, STAAD and similar "traditional" programs. How do I make it easy for them to use our files that are generated with this method?
You can export .DXF and .DWG from both Sketchup and Layout. It's very easy.
is there a way to get the .skp? please
برنامج رائع شكرآآآآآ
very cool.
Heath - could be me? I'm clearly not a professional speaker, as Sergio pointed out ha ha ha!
how large is that sketchup file?
tia...
You'll save lot of time, closing your line work, using makefaces 1.4 plugin.
What is the purpose of exploding? 14:49
I want to be like you.......you are the best
How I can download this video in HD ?
Anyone else tried to close those menus on the right because you tought it really was sketchup and not a video?
Please what`s your email or best way to contact you Mr. Nick. Am trying to ask you some specific question... Thanks for all your great work
How do you determine dimensions? 8:42
In the design phase I determine a basic concept that strives for construction increments of 8", 16", 24".
thanks.........
