*What's your favorite underappreciated fish for a community tank?* If you're looking for a centerpiece fish for that community, try one of these: ua-cam.com/video/Iinv7wWjhzA/v-deo.html
Hey guys just found your channel been growing and raising fish since I was 8. Now in my 40s love all the 411 you guys share. I just moved to Ft. Lauderdale from Texas and looking to find some local breeders you reccomend. I'm finding a bunch of koi and cichlids in the area. But would like to find more of these guppies you have in this video. Any info you feel you can share would be greatly appreciated..👍
I really dig my pygmy corydoras...I "settled" on them one day because my fish store didn't have the shrimp I was looking for. After keeping them for almost 2 years now, they're one of my favorite fish...great clean-up crew and I think it's great that they hangout on the tops of leaves and on top the sponge filter, it's like every day is a chill day at the beach for them, lol
I've been keeping fish for over 40 years and I am rarely without a tank with white clouds. I've kept them outdoors in a small pond in summer, too (Chicagoland).
I recently started getting back into the hobby ( after stopping when i was 12) now 20 haha… i built a small rocky scape with some plants for White Clouds as soon as i saw them in store- so lively when theyre happy, cool to feed & most definitely a great started fish AND jaw dropping to say the least!
Agree 100% on the gold white clouds. Also, they're harder to find, but the Vietnamese white cloud is a very beautiful fish. They are slightly smaller and the fins on the males are pretty spectacular.
Couldn't agree more with Pearl Gourammis, I absolutely adore mine. They are my 'show fish' much friendlier and easier than some other show fish and absolutely gorgeous, especially the males.
9/10 times when a new fishkeeper thinks they want a goldfish for their beginner setup the actual fish they should be keeping is rosy barbs or white clouds, no joke. People need to get these fish's names out there.
@@FishFosh That's how it went for me. I thought of goldfish, but while my tank was cycling I did some more research and went for long fin rosy barbs :). My favourite thing about them is how social they are, they come to the front glass, they take food from hands, etc. The only thing I don't like about them is their violent mating, each time they spawn the females end up with shredded fins, missing scales, etc. Usually it all ends well, but one female recently died because she lost too many scales on her belly and it got infected. Right now another female has missing scales on the same exact spot - so far she seems healthy, but it worries me.
I LOVE THE BOLIVIAN RAM. There cheep. Hardy. And small. It’s also a much more rewarding fish when you see their colors get vibrant It’s make you feel like your doing a good job again.
Love that this video is based off quality of life for the fish and ownership vs. just ownership. A true master of the craft.... experience speaks volumes.

Cory first off i wanted to say thank you for your excitement about the longfin rosy barb; it got me so excited for them i went out and cleaned the local petsmart of its longfin rosy barbs! they only had 4 but they are going to be my first fish in my 20 long to eat up all the bad algae as it continues to grow in. thank you so much for all of your videos, i even talked with the petsmart employee about why i chose them and he also has watched this video. amazing! thanks!
I love Congo tetras and the Kribensis! I work in a pet store where we have both, and a lot other fish as well. Now I've been taking care of our aquariums and learned a lot, and also got my favourites, so I'm reading as much as possible, planning to get an aquarium later this year. Hopefully with Kribensis and Congo tetras. I really want a beautiful aquarium and also look a lot for aquascaping. I hope it all will turn into something beautiful once I have my fishes :)
once you see these fish in person, they look 10x better. neon rosey bars are like shimmery rose gold. beautiful! and omg longfin leopard danios are gorgeous! i had not seen these in person and when i finally did i was mesmerized. you need a decent size school to really take in the beauty
I just got myself some Bolivians and I absolutely adore them. I didn't even remotely intend to pick up any kind of Ram when I went into the shop because my parameters/temperature don't fit any of the "popular" Rams. I was basically just telling the shopkeeper "well I'm looking for something similar to Rams but there is no way I can actually keep Rams," and then he showed me the Bolivians and they perfectly fit my water parameters which none of the others do. Literally, 1 minute after I put them in my tank they already colored up some and went up to the glass-front to inspect me. Threw in some food and they immediately started chowing down on it and after that, they went exploring every inch of the tank. Such amazing, outgoing, peaceful fish!
I find that leopard danios look really cool when I mix them with regular zebra danios. They’re the same species so they all school together, and the contrast really brings out the beauty in both. I have a school of 4 leopards and 2 zebras and they’re so much fun.
I absolutely LOVE Rams and Kribs! I haven't seen Kribs in years and I can't remember last I saw Bolivian Rams. These guys are definitely under appreciated!
I think I just channeled my inner Cory... literally just restocked my 75 gallon about 3 days ago with 14 phantom tetra, 10 pristella tetra, 14 corydora paleatus, and 3 pearl gourami. Was planning on adding bolivian rams next haha
The Pearl Gourami is my favourite fish, they have an amazing pattern and they shimmer in so many different colours under good lighting. Lemon Tetras too are amazing. Such personality and great colouring in a small fish. I love keeping them with Cardinals
I’ve been a strict New World cichlid fish keeper since forever. My wife talked me into a barb tank...got roseys, green tigers, and glo tigers. Loving the movement and activity, we’re going to add a few albino tigers to the mix.
I’m glad you talked about Bolivian rams. They are such fun fish. I’m working up to a 55 gallon to put 6-8 of those in along with a schooling tetra and some otos. It will look so good.
Long fin rosy barbs and congo tetras were never something i thought i would start the hobby with. But we bought a 52g tank from someone who couldnt keep fish anymore and i’m so in love with all the fish that came with it
Very nice list. I agree with everything except the Congo Tetras. I loved them until I actually kept them myself. They are easily the most disruptive fish I've kept in any community tank. I had 3 very mature pairs, and the males were constantly racing back and forth sparing each other. They would spin around and mess up the plants trying to impress the females. They would also spawn every day even though the conditions weren't ideal for them. I thought that was great until I actually tried to breed them. Once out of the community tank and in the breeding tanks they stayed stressed out, and I eventually lost a pair. They couldn't handle being alone in pairs. I know people love them, but I doubt I will ever keep them again.
I know its cliche but I love the top 10 format. Everyone: get Odessa barbs ASAP! I waited >1yr for Greg Sage to have some for sale and its totally worth it. Super good fish in my livebearer community tank. They don't even eat fry (or not a noticable amount).
I was already set on getting Congo Tetras as one of the main fish in my new 55 gallon tank. Now I'm even more sold! They're beautiful and I can't wait to see a school of them swimming around in a planted tank with nice black gravel! I might consider a Pearl Gourami or two as well after watching this.
Totally agree on the Odessa barb. The green, red, and silver pops. And they're not at all aggressive. Very hardy and can be kept in a variety of water parameters.
I have a 75 with Congo tetras and Kribensis. Both are very beautiful and fun to watch! The kribensis are really great when you have more than a dozen females constantly showing their bellies trying to compete for two males. These are two great fish!
Kribensis are awesome and so under appreciated. I have 1 full size adult beautiful female living with rainbows and barbs. No on bothers her and she bothers no one. Plus they are very adventurous fish that always want to know what's going on.
I have gold/sunset mountain minnows in my two wine barrel ponds outside. They show up better than the regular mountain minnows from above and they colour up nicely from the sun. As a bonus they keep mosquitoes to zero. If you’re thinking of mountain minnows for outside ponds, I back Cory’s recommendation for getting gold ones 👍🏻
I totally agree about white clouds. I have the gold and the regular (plain). Both have beautiful color and I don't understand why they aren't more popular.
Thank you Cory for all of your education, insight, straightforward honesty, realness and willingness to put people in their place. I love your “you do you” perspective.
I really love my golden white clouds - I think they are my favorite fish even with all the other neat corydoras and tetras I have. So low maintenance and hardy and have fun flaring and mating behavior too!
Great video! Nice footage. One of my favorite underrated fish is trigonostigma espei, or lambchop rasbora. They hang out mostly at the top but are fine getting food at the bottom of my 45 Tall. They breed easily and they're sturdy. They have brilliant color, and they're very chill. Some of my fish are still alive from my initial order from Rachel O'Leary in 2017! They've been breeding happily ever since and I only do basic tank maintenance, no fancy extra effort to maintain the plants. They are FUN to watch!!
My dad has some Columbian tetra and they’re such cool fish! They look like mini piranhas when he feeds them, they all dart up to the top and back down it’s so cool to watch!
One of my favirite is the Long-finned Rosey Barb! If you love long-finned Comet type goldfish or Koi but don't want the huge size or mess then this is the fish for you. We have a huge tank at work that I oversee with these plus other community fish and they keep to themselves, are thorough when scavenging for any left over food (they are fed very well but are good cleaners too) and look gorgeous with their reds with black top fins. Right now we only have males but the previous batch did include some females and they were beautiful as well. I could sit and watch them for hours. They rather remind me a little of Bettas, also a favorite of mine.
I sort of became accidental fish keeper or rather surrogate parent to some bad husbandry fishkeeping, but checking out the uncommon community fish are so cool! I currently house guppies in a 20 gallon, but have additional 10 gals lying around so I wanted put some of these among my watchlist. Thank you Cory for the recommends. Love your channel!!! I also bought liquid fertilizer for my plants from you guys with a the Murphy sticker haha. I had to check out the Mbu puffer, he's a star!
Mine would be Giant Danios they color up so nicely when they mature with orange and blue. I love how they school. I looked past them so many times and now they're one of my favorites.
I try not to mention prices on a video or podcast because they are so dynamic, especially with current inflation and supply chain issues. All of the fish you mentioned are spot on as great, underrated fish! Cheers!
Those are some nice shoaling fish.. there’s times when I kept cichlids i wish I would have had hundreds of smaller fish. IMO it captures the eyes better when you have several fish moving in different directions. 😊
I had the opportunity to keep a small group of Bolivian Rams several years ago and I have to say, they've become my favorite species of South American Dwarf Cichlids due to the ease of keeping and due to the fact they look more like the larger species of Earth-eater. It's a shame fish stores in my area don't sell them that often.
Even if it is an 'underappreciated list of fish', I am glad you didn't mention plecos! Every beginner list has mostly plecos and corys and I am not a huge fan 😁 Thanks so much for this video - as a beginner, I had no idea about these varieties.
Some of my favorite overlooked fish- Daisy’s blue ricefish, gold white clouds, curviceps cichlids for their blue color and great personality, green neons, praecox rainbows, lampeye killifish, and green fire tetras. If you have the right setup for any of these fish they can be absolutely gorgeous.
I saw long-finned rosy barbs about 20 yrs ago and they were spectacular! Now that I have tanks, I havn't found any locally available. But yeah- I agree they are the best! I like barbs in general as an active fun fish. I have about 15 melon barbs in a 4 ft tank. They display and spar with each other, but pretty much leave the other fish alone. They look really good with my school of cherry barbs swimming around up top.
I know this is a several year old video, but I have some Venesuelan reds that I absoutely love. They are a delight to watch rummage through the substrate for snacks.
Another branch of barb are the long fin green tiger barbs. I bought 2 for 10 each, fully grown and chunky and they look amazing. They do chase each other sometimes but that's because I need more. Now the thing is that I have not seen them other than that one time I bought them. I've asked many local fish stores about them and they're currently rare. I'm just waiting until I can get a small school of them and I'm sure they'll look amazing.
Had an Odessa Barb survive the coldest San Diego, California winter a couple of years ago outside. Amazing color when I first removed him due to plenty algae and larvae. Kept him in an unheated tank indoors for a short time with Sterbi Corys. Had to put him into his own tank, he would tear up the cats. Odessa Barbs need to be kept in a school of at least 6 or more to be most peaceful. Was planning to add them to a 55 gallon. He passed away before I could order more since they are hard to find locally.
The long-finned rosy barbs are great fish, and in my experiences they’re very peaceful. The problem I had with them came when I put them in a 55 community tank that was already home to three angelfish. They didn’t nip fins or anything like that, but their constant darting about the tank seemed to stress out the angels, who hunkered down in one corner of the aquarium. After a few days of this, I moved the barbs to different quarters. The angels appreciated the move.
That's a bit strange... My Rosy Barb's are calm, and move slowly around the tank almost nervously... They are housed with other barb's (Checkered and Gold) which also don't bother anything at all... None of the Barb's ever bother anything at all... They don't bother my White clouds, or my Long Finned Comet Goldie either... Very strange...
Thanks for some more great ideas! I'm in the middle of setting up my next tank and undecided on what I want to keep in it. This gives me a lot more to consider.
Zebra danios with regular fins are some of my favorite fish. Hated getting them out of the tank though. They're SUPER fast. Definitely going to get a school when I set up a 55 gallon in the future!

Raphael cats...pretty, stay on the smaller side, little dinosaurs
I feel mollies, platies, swoed tails are underrated considering how easy they are and bright colors different patterns they are available.
Danios....
keyhole cichlid

I 100% agree that the white cloud is under appreciated. Sold as feeders in lots of store. They are soo pretty.

I had one for years and years in a 29 gallon; absolutely gorgeous fish. Kept it with khulis and cherry barbs
Just have to pile on the love for Congo Tetras they are so beautiful in planted tanks and constantly active without being hyper
I love the long finned rosy barbs - they have the good looks of a goldfish without out so many complications to keeping them.

I’m starting to diversify my community tank and this is very helpful.
I love when u name fish species that go together in a community tank.. schooling fish.. top.. bottom.. centerpiece.. Breeding pairs..
Got both clouds and Dannios in my tank. Love the little shows they put on 🥰
One of the most underrated fish I’ve owned is the blood fin tetra. They color up so nice and are the tightest schoolers I’ve owned.
Love black phantoms and black skirt tetras. All Danios are fun. Gold white clouds are great as they stand out across the room even though small.
Gouramis! I love them 😁😁😁
I know this is a several year old video, but I have some Venesuelan reds that I absoutely love. They are a delight to watch rummage through the substrate for snacks.
Wicked quick!! This was another great vid and I will be using that term from now on xx
Nice video Corry!
I love my kribensis!!!!! The colour on my female is absolutely popping and she’s always up to something 😎
Oh white clouds are my favorite fish!
i really loved my Odessas too ... but they had the greenish gray to them, not all orangey red. REALLY active fish too!!!
I've been eyeing some longfin rosy barbs at my lfs, I'll take this as a sign to get them!
My favorite are White Clouds. I have them right now and they are a fun fish! Thanks for this list. It gives me a few more ideas of fish to try.
Yes!! I love my white clouds! They’re super chill with my betta and I love it
Thanks for some more great ideas! I'm in the middle of setting up my next tank and undecided on what I want to keep in it. This gives me a lot more to consider.
Love Cory in the beginning at the counter. What a fun shot.
Zebra danios with regular fins are some of my favorite fish. Hated getting them out of the tank though. They're SUPER fast. Definitely going to get a school when I set up a 55 gallon in the future!
I recommend all this all the time at the store I work at happy to see them. There so under rated
Very nice video I love white clouds. Thanks Cory for Recommending these awesome fish.
Amazing watching this and 5 of these is in my 65gal community planted tank!!
I love white clouds! They are awesome in a summer tub!
