Just to make it crystal clear, this video isn’t trying to make fun of Gerry Anderson’s vision, or to criticize Terrahawks and call it a bad show. This was simply meant to be a comedic look at the show, and encourage people unfamiliar with it to watch it.
And on the racism note, I don’t think this show was intentionally trying to be racist. The 1980’s were a very different time from today, and as another commenter mentioned, Gerry Anderson was one of the first to utilize black and female main characters, which were amazing strides for the time.
I’m still planning on making parts 2 and 3 in the future, but everything going on with this video has been tiring, so I’m going to focus on other projects for the time being.
If you did enjoy the video, I appreciate you giving it a watch. I’d also recommend watching the show itself if you haven’t already. It’s a bit if an oddity, but it’s still a fun watch.
Gerry's series were far from Racist. He was all about diverse casts before it became cool - Watch "Captain Scarlet" also by Gerry.
And I agree, just thought it was a little excessive to turn Hiro’s dialect into a joke several times
The 1980s were a very different time from today? OMG sometimes they only seem like yesterday! Well, the Anderson store recently released a "bundle" of 3 Terrahawks books, in time to make a great extra 50th birthday pressie for me.
Also- you're "missing" a British 'in joke'. Zero is voiced by Windsor Davies who was famous for doing military roles in films and TV, so people recognised his famous "yes ma'am"- even me as a kid back in the 80s
That’s pretty interesting. Thanks for the info!
Whispering Grass, "I will not have gossip in this jungle". "Lovely boy".
I used to watch this as a kid. Always scared the crap out of me, but couldn't stop watching it.
When I first saw a clip with Zelda when I was younger, it scared me a lot too lol
@@Muted7017 trust me, definitely had done sleepless nights 😆
I can empathise with that, Dr Who had the same affect on me in the 70's when I was a kid.
I remember Terrahawks from the early 80s. In 1983 I was eleven. I was fascinated by the tic ta toe game between the zeroids and Zeldas cubes.
I liked most of Gerry Andersons Supermarionation shows, Joe 90 took me some time to get into, it was often slow to start, and I often ended up switching channels - I was always wary I might be missing something if I didn't since I missed most of Tiswas a few years ealrier, watching swap shop/whatever it was replaced it, waiting through the drivel for the cartoons.
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before but Terrahawks was made around the time that Gerry Anderson fandom was first coming together as its own thing called Fanderson. As such, Hiro was actually based on a member of Fanderson from Japan that Gerry met at a convention called Hiroki Hashimoto. It was his particular manner of speech that caught Gerry's attention.
The man was very practically minded, and tended to just write into his shows whatever odd thing caught his interest that month. That's how we even have Joe 90, a show about a boy who gets brain patterns downloaded into his head on the regular to become a secret agent.
That said, I very much enjoy Terrahawks as it's one of few Sci-fi shows that isn't afraid of being weird and goofy while simultaneously telling a serious story about world defenders and the martian hordes. I've got a few 16mm film reels from the show scanned in 4K on my channel if you feel like checking those out :)
I was just the right age for this when it hit the screens, and it was a really popular show. Looking back at it later, it's FAR weirder and way more brain-scrambling than nine-year-old me remembered.
So much adorability in the video: the zeroids, plus the cat on the bed, at the end....
Terrahawks was just bizarre.
Still a fun watch though
I suspect the creators and writers were doing a lot of drugs.
supermarionation is a portmanteau of marionette and animation. It' like much of everything in this show a bit of a cheeky wink to the audience
That makes sense, thanks for the info!
Try Space Precinct for more future weirdness!
Thanks for the recommendation!
I didn't quite get "TerraHawks" when it came out. But it grew on me. Why that sort of puppet? When looking for studio space one was found with a large pit. So instead of having puppeteers operate the puppets from above with string, they were operated from below standing in the pit. Why did the show have that "look"? To save money it was shot on 16mm film instead of 35mm. Was it a bit of a mix of every other show Gerry had done? Yes. (Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Secret Service, UFO (live action), Space 1999). Did all the characters have silly names? Yes. Look, just kick back and enjoy it. It was made 40 years ago.
Thanks for the info. And to clarify, I’m just trying to have fun with the show and to take the piss out of it a little bit. I find it charming in a bit of an odd way, and I’m trying to build that feeling over the coming videos. Not meant to make the show sound like a travesty, just trying to have a good laugh with it
Why does the puppet on the thumbnail look like Stewart from Mad TV? 😂😂
The similarities are uncanny
I side with Zero on the analogy of gold and God.
The word "gold" most likely comes from the word "god" (as did "good") because it was the sacred metal of the Sun god.
Part of Christianity, the "Christ" part comes from Sun worship (Mithra), the other part, "Jesus", comes from Mars worship (Ares). Amazingly the gold in the episode came from Mars, and "ironically" iron was the sacred metal of Mars worship.
Damn man! Best Video by far made me think the british are even more backwards than I did before. Also Congrats on the vid poppin off!
Thanks man! And thanks for reprising the Exec role!
I had a toy zeroid as a kid.. it was awesome
I was actually looking on eBay to see if I could get a toy from the show to commemorate the video… until I saw how expensive they are. The Zeroid one in particular actually looked really cool though
@@Muted7017 yeah i loved it... i mean it didn't quite live up to my expectations... i wanted the eyes to light up a bit somehow, but it still looked cool.
Man i think i have to have a rummage through my old mans garage to try and find it.. guess its pretty shabby though..
I ❤ Stu Dapples!!!
Mam (pronounced marm) in the UK is an honorific term for women in authority. Like the American Ma'am. The equivalent to the American mom in British English is mum.
Ohhh that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification
Nothing strange about Terrahawks it’s a great tv show it’s Jerry Anderson classic tv show jerry Anderson was a genius we are proud of all Jerry Anderson’s tv shows best of British
Not trying to make the show sound bad, just trying to poke some fun at it. It is a fun watch.
I'm confusion, I thought the replacement clone for Dr Ninestein would be could Dr Tenstein.
And what is it with the "stein" part anyway, is he a beer fan? (lol).
Good thing when you game you don't get them interrupting you with a communication override. And oh boy the racism
Yeah that would really suck. And yeah, that was the 1980’s for you unfortunately
@@Muted7017 yep unfortunately. Lets see how the other seasons fare
Not racist in my opinion.Just a comic reference to how some asian people have difficulty in pronouncing certain words in english, there is no infererence here that asian people are stupid or inferior to any other race.
@@rickykilby4672I definitely see where you’re coming from, just found it unnecessary for it to be turned into a joke several times throughout the show. Not trying to accuse the show of being flat-out racist either, there are far worse ways they could’ve taken it
@@Muted7017 I take on board what you say.I am an avid fan of gerry anderson's shows particularly thunderbirds, captain scarlet, ufo and space 1999.However,i am not very keen on terrahawks. On the racism issue anderson was very anti racist, and very much a pioneer in the mid to late sixties.Leutenant green in captain scarlet was a black character, and the crack angel aircraft were all flown by women, both of these instances would be rare in the sixties.I very much enjoyed your video by the way, much of what you said i agree with, and gerry has said that terrahawks wasn't his finest hour.
Terrahawks... not one of Gerry Anderson's best shows probably one of his worst, it lived in the uncanny valley. It really was a rehash of Captain Scarlet. Not a show I would recommend. Lt Hero alone would get it banned today. Zelda and 'family' were from the planet Guk,and were not Matians
It’s definitely not amazing but I’m still having fun with it. And thanks for the correction, I think that’s talked about more in the later seasons
Being banned today gets a badge of honour from me.
So they were immigrant Martians.
Terrahawks is downright awful. UFO and Space: 1999 from Gerry Anderson are far superior. Even Thunderbirds is better.
As a kid i enjoyed terrahawks more.. it was just whackier and didnt take itself seriously at all. Thunderbirds was just a bit boring to me compared
