the title really does capture the essence of the movie like "Did you expect us to match Casino Royale? Well we can't but here we made this to provide you with some...Quantum of Solace."
Quantum might even be my fave of Craig’s. It’s the most rewatchable. Bond is badass and hadn’t yet begun to age prematurely. It’s a short punchy film with great action, great character moments and subtle humour. It looks beautiful and has a brilliant soundtrack by Arnold. I for one really enjoy the experimental feel to it. When I first saw it I was a bit disappointed- the end is very anticlimactic and rather dull.. but i’ve grown to appreciate the film.
"Forgettable" is a perfect description IMHO. I saw this film but watching your review made me realize I barely remember anything about it. Water in the desert... oh yeah, WTF was that about? And the main villain was about as menacing as an Apple genius bar guy
I would say this is my favourite Bond film of Craig’s tenure. The editing is very chaotic and makes the story feel way too rushed, but that helps me enjoy it as it’s a fun action-packed thrill ride with some vaguely memorable characters and some fun scenes. Craig gives a peak performance, being a brutal blunt instrument who gets into some real brutal fights. I admit I also love the title song, mainly because it’s the only high-energy Bond song we’ve had in years. It gets me in the mood to enjoy the movie, whilst the three that follow just depress me.
The movie is under-cooked (due as much to a writers' strike as an ill-fitting director). However, I did warm to Craig considerably in this sequel. His 'Casino Royale' characterisation wasn't meant to make him that sympathetic overall. His Bond had several clear flaws in that film that needed blunting. From the moment he arrives with Mr. White for the interrogation with M, it's clear that Bond is carrying considerable psychic pain which humanises him and makes it easier to empathise and relate to him.
Quantum of Solace is (along with The Living Daylights) one of the most underrated Bond films for me. Is it as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall either side of it? No. But it's slick, doesn't outstay its welcome at under 2 hours, the direction is very good and the action is great. The opera scene and the final fight in the exploding hotel are as good as anything in the series.
I always thought Daniel Craig seemed familiar somehow, till I realised where I'd seen him. It was his uncredited part playing the spare head of Zaphod Beeblebrox in the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. What a guy.
The problem with Quantum, in my obviously esteemed personal opinion, is that it has a whole series of excellent visuals. The opening car chase is rather good, the rope fight is excellent, spotting the board members at the opera is great, the visual storytelling through the desert is also great, but the whole thing is somehow less than the sum of its parts. It's oddly unsatisfying.
I found it perfectly satisfying. It's a straight forward revenge film unlike Diamonds Are Forever which does little to address the fact Bond's first and only wife gets murdered. I'm surprised you said the opening car chase was good though as usually people criticise the bad editing, as if they'd know about editing, so glad you gave that a thumbs up.
@@JohnBloggs-m8l The stakes in the chase are high, the visuals tell you they are high, the Aston is being dismembered as the chase goes on (again, high stakes), the locations look great, it's possibly the best Bond car chase since the Lotus on Sardinia. Not counting The Living Daylights because that wasn't really a car chase, nor was Tomorrow Never Dies. The Iceland chase is fun, but that's its problem: fun. This one was urgent.

@@ricardocantoral7672 Some can't. The opera scene was superb and the editing of the dogfight was exactly what it should have been. All of the action followed logically. For a clear example of poor editing, watch the car/motorcycle chase in Never Say Never Again. Choppy? watch OHMSS. The problem with the editing is the rush from international location to international location. The extra fifteen minutes of film time could have been spent on the transitions.
The worst thing about Quantum of Solace was that it was a sequel to Casino Royale. I came out of that film pretty excited for for a new and different James Bond after not previously being anything beyond a casual enjoyer of the series. On watching this I felt kind of like "Oh. So it's back to business as usual then...."
I'm on the same page regarding this movie's theme song. Continuing the rock aspect of Chris Cornell's brilliant "You Know My Name", I thought QOS would similarly continue the quality of "Casino Royale". It seemed to be the case for the first 15-20 mins. Then it just fell off a cliff for me personally. And it was a trajectory that continued to plummet for the remainder of Craig's tenure. In my opinion, of course. There are some great action set pieces. And "pieces" is the issue for me. They just didn't add up to a cohesive high quality whole.

Yeah, I can never remember this one. Then when I try really hard all I remember is the exploding hotel at the end and the totally unwatchable fight scene at the start where the editing makes it impossible to work out what's going on.
This film, generally speaking, is a mess. I got the feeling when watching it that even the people making it don’t really know what is going on. I hated this one on release, mainly due to the shaky am used for the action, the shorthand telling of thr Opera shootout and Gemma Arteton's character (nb not the actress, she's great). But over time, I began to enjoy this a lot more. There are a lot of good character moments, the plane chase was really good and Olga Kurylenko got her kick ass moment at the end. The trilogy of Casino, Quantum and Skyfall do such a great job of stripping down Bond to his most base level then build him back up into 007. It's such a shame that they felt the need to shoehorn more into the same storyline with Spectre and No Time To Die.
The film is dire; but, I never found the follow ups to be particularly awe-inspiring, either. Apart from Casino Royale, the Craig films leave me cold, with the over-dependence on 9/11 metaphors, betrayals, copycat scenes and massive leaps in logic (or technological stupidity). MI-6 ends up being a bigger bunch of morons than in the later Roger Moore years. I know Skyfall and SPECTRE get high praise, but they did nothing for me. Part of the problem is completely leaving behind the fantasy roots to try to seem contemporary, but they end up with minor villains. I miss the days of volcano fortresses and 3rd act commando attacks and nasty henchmen. That was why I preferred The Man From UNCLE and Kingsman, to the Bond films, as they reveled in what used to be cool about the Bond films.
Since when has SPECTRE received high praise? People always trash that one. Anyway, I do agree that I miss vintage Bond and I am annoyed that they have been trying to ape the Mission Impossible series. The best thing about this was the playing the video game - at least that had some tension. Also telling is the lack of a commentary track and any substantial special features on the DVD/BR releases
An utterly forgettable villain (I've literally forgot who he is despite Stam mentioning his name several times) and a plot that most Bond fans couldn't tell you about cause its not remotely memorable. Not necessarily a bad film, but one that makes me wonder 'why the hell should I care?' Quite liked the Jack White/Alicia Keyes theme though.
Unironically one of my favorite Bond films. It’s fast paced and a little bit different in a way I like. People shat on License to Kill for years because it didn’t follow the usual formula, but now most consider it good. I see Quantum like that. On the other hand I disliked Casino Royale because it’s slow (45 minutes of poker) and Skyfall because the plot is silly - the villains plan relying largely on coincidences. I’m not saying they’re bad movies - I just like Quantum more.
All I know is I walked into the theater expecting a 007 cloak & dagger spy genre film, and walked out feeling like I watched an expensive TV action serial with lots of antagonists, but devoid of an interesting villain. In the words of critic Roger Ebert (paraphrased), the action and chase scenes using in-tight photography and CGI were disorienting, and the music score is the most forgettable of any Bond film before it.
I just binge-watched all of the Daniel Craig Bond movies on trans-Pacific flights (except No Time to Die, which they didn't have). I hadn't seen any of them before. I thought Casino Royale was surprisingly great, and they kind of gradually slid downhill from there, as all the traditional elements of the Bond formula got reintroduced. (I did like the Craig-era versions of Q and Moneypenny, introduced in the later films; they were entertaining--but they served to dilute the presentation of Craig's Bond as a terrifying thug, which is the thing that really makes these films work: the realization that you shouldn't want to be anywhere near this guy.) Maybe giving the films a story arc was a mistake--it gets sillier as it goes on, especially in Spectre. But I thought Quantum of Solace was still comparatively good.
Can honestly say it was from this film onwards that i started to not enjoy subsequent bond films. To this day i still couldn't tell you what happens in this film (prior to this video ofc)
The most disappointing thing about this movie is that there wasn't a reference to the original short story. It's mostly about Bond talking to the Governor of Nassau about one of his subordinates doomed marriage. It shows Bond that his job was less 'real' than real life. It's Ian Fleming writing like he wanted to, aping Willie Maugham and Joseph Conrad (in his social reformer guise).
For me, this was is just 'eh fine I guess but I'd rather be watching Casino Royale or Skyfall.' Which is kind of a shame because it isn't bad just not as good. Even the theme tune is eh alright but Chris Cornell's you know my name is just such a great song it would always have been a tough one to follow.
I’ve always thought QoS had the pacing of an 80’s Hong Kong action movie. Doesn’t have the clarity of one but I’ve always liked this film. Writers strike stopped it from reaching full potential but I love the grit, and the willingness they had to do something as different to Casino Royale as that was to previous Bond’s. Plus, I don’t think the Bond and M relationship in Skyfall works without this in between that and Casino Royale. Also, I do love the villain squealing like a psycho as he swings the axe around like a twat
@@FlymanMS The weakest action scene. Agreed on that. Still not sure how he trips up the boat at the climax of the scene. I certainly prefer Stuart Baird’s editing. Still, the visceral nature of the rest of the action does float my . . . boat
In Spain we jonkingly call the movie "Cuanto Sol Hace" (similar pronouncing as Quantum of Solace) which basically mean what we say in spain when the day is really sunny. Which is apt for the last part of the movie were the villain lives becuase its in the middle of the desert and its about getting rid of water? I dunno i find this movie utterly boring so I only watched it once.
The thing that people do not see with James Bond is that most of the films (and villains) are mediocre. There are a handful of great ones, a few good ones, but most are just average (but had potential there)
Never a good sign when you have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for left-over stories. The Bond franchise has been like this for 30 years now. I don't remember any of the new Bond movies. The action is good but it goes on for too long, it's wall-2-wall action with some bitter Judy Dench dialogue in between. Eventually they'll come across Ian Flemming's grocery list and mistake it for notes about James Bond...
I actually enjoyed this more than the other Daniel Craig films. To be honest, I really did not enjoy the Daniel Craig series. I had been a Bond fan from the beginning, but not sure if I'm still interested now.
I'll always stand in QoS's corner, not a great Bond entry but certainly not deserving of the the negativity it seems to attract. It is also the last Bond in the franchise I will voluntarily watch as I have near pathological and unreserved destain for the three that follow it. When QoS underperformed the producers clearly panicked and went back to the tired old play-book of cartoonish villains and nauseating levels of member-berry fan-service... I don't like Skyfall very much.
Quantum's villains weren't exactly memorable and the evil organization is SPECTRE lite. As for member berries, there are call backs to Goldfinger and The Spy Who Loved Me.
When Craig's Casino Royale came out, a reviewer I trust said that this is an edgier, grittier Bond. Having been appalled by the violence in Licensed to Kill, I decided that I was done with 007. Nobody has convinced me to change my mind.
I loved "Casino Royale" - it is my favourite Bond film. I thought "Skyfall" was really good. I found "Quantum of Solace" very disappointing and I prefer to ignore that it exists.
Wait, so let me get this straight... You think QoS is a good, but not great Bond film? I didn't quite understand your feelings until you said it 6 times, but it didn't sink in until you said it on the even 12th time.
Definitely looks better after last two Graig movies. Spectre and No Time to Die with all silly stuff and cliches look like a horrible fever dream after realistic Casino Royale.
I mean there's only five films so that's not saying much. The only two that were really good were Casino and Skyfall but I disagree with people who hate on Quantum, I still put it above Spectre and No Time to Die, they were both terrible.
I have to respectfully disagree on a couple of things: the film doesn't feel bigger than Casino at all. Quite the opposite. They rush through so many set pieces - nothing really sticks and the action (and by that I mean the EDITING) is some of the worst I have ever seen. Which is frustrating, because some stunts were amazing and you just couldn't SEE them properly. Also, the amateurish theme song will always remain on my "worst of all time" list. I mean, seriously - the sound engineering was INTENTIONALLY bad to give it a "garage" feeling. F-off! Furthermore, you can work in any title without being weird - listen to Ace Of Base's "Goldeneye" or Alice Cooper's "Man With The Golden Gun" for example. (Ah, what could have been...) I do agree however that my initial outright hatred of the film has been replaced with your aforementioned "meeeh". 😂
Dreadful film - then again, although I highly rated Daniel Craig as an actor, I though he was a TERRIBLE Bond. (I thought Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan were the best for the Bond movies, but none of them were remotely as depicted in the Fleming books)
1. Madonna's Die Another Day was already a thing. 2. So was All Time High. 3. You include Adele's Skyfall in your Top Three Worst Bond Themes. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I can't agree with yours. At least, not when it comes to Bond theme songs.
Craig has a terrible hit rate for his movies. Two great ones, two crap ones and the last one was half great before turning into total crap after the credits!
Sadly a wasted opportunity, suffering from a case of Bourne-itis with the whiplash editing which ruins the action scenes since your eyes are spending more time trying to make sense of what is happening than enjoying what is happening. Btw, would someone explain why the director intercut an exciting foot chase with a horse race which sapped all energy and momentum from the chase? Just saying. Anyway, Greene says at the Quantum meet - it is the world's most important resource and we need to control as much as we can. Everyone (CIA, MI-6, etc) thinks its oil he is referring to. It actually is water. Oil reps the old (industrial) world. Whoever controls the world's water supply - could hold the world govts hostage. Bolivia is just the start of Quantum's plan and with global warming and water supply being a massive concern in the next decade, this might actually be one of the best villain schemes in Bond. Wish the film could have played up the scale and vision of the plan beyond the third world banana republic aspect which robs it of its true sinister nature.
Ah the old Quantum of Solace isn't very good argument but more gets written about this Bond Film than any other. I think they are still trying to establish what Daniel Craig's Bond is but only finding it in the edit. This video is really interesting ua-cam.com/video/OuHUdyCydaE/v-deo.htmlsi=I5Ea_Ku6gxCu63NU
One of my favorite bits in Inside Gaming playthrough of Chaser was when they were replacing words in Bond movies titles with “shit”, and they just said “Quantum of Solace” as is.
25 years of Bond films being eh? Goldeneye one of the biggest Bonds ever spawning a video game people still get dewy eyed about today? That was not an eh film. And the only thing really crap about Quantum was the on the nose derivative callback to Goldfinger and everyone overlooks Judi Dench does some of her best acting in this film.
@@StamFine hmmmm, I'd debate the most too frankly, that's a big statement and are you counting 25 years back from this particular film cos if you are that only includes the Brosnan films and I would say that's about even since he only did 4 films, the first two which are good, and only the second two being your ascribed eh. Though that boat chase in The World is not Enough was superb.
The poor story construction, the choppy editing, the underwritten characters, Bond is a homicidal maniac, the bland title song, there's a lot more going on than just a poor homage to Goldfinger. Quantum is the worst Bond film of all time.

On the other hand I disliked Casino Royale because it’s slow (45 minutes of poker) and Skyfall because the plot is silly - the villains plan relying largely on coincidences. I’m not saying they’re bad movies - I just like Quantum more.
This is my favorite Craig Bond movie because I'm fucking stupid. I love Attack of the Clones and Alien 3 too.
You're just misguided.😁
What's more important: do you like them as guilty pleasures or do you genuinely think they are great films?
@@MacStyran Probably movies where his cutting a hole in the bottom of the popcorn bucket paid off for him.
At least you admit it! 🤣
Alien 3 is perfectly decent
I thought I was the only one to like Alien 3! I don’t hate Attack either.
I was thoroughly bored watching this at the pictures, but when I saw it later on telly I rather enjoyed it.
8:59 ha! It's true! -- in this film he's throwing away everything he's given! 😆
It's the most Fleming of all, a piece of cinema, not a license flick, and so meta. The Bond/M/Vesper ending alone it worth the ticket price.
....bring on the 'Skyfall' review...!
So Mr. Wright has tied David Hedison for the actor who's appeared as Felix Leiter the most.
No, Hedison did it twice (LALD and LTK). Wright three times (CR, QOS, NTTD).
14:34 Shirley Bassey’s rejected “No Good About Goodbye” title theme song should have been used. Available on UA-cam if anyone wants to listen to it.
It wasn’t rejected. It wasn’t even recorded when this movie was released. That’s a fan myth. Agree it would have worked great, however.
I think Andrew Scott should be the next James Bond
Craig is one of my least favorite Bonds. Combining Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Quantum is genius!
I missed the tong in cheek cheesy humor with Craig’s Bond. Too serious for my taste.
What about the jumpcut boat chase. It rivals Liam Neeson climbing over the fence scene in Taken 3.
@@FlymanMS The weakest action scene. Agreed on that. Still not sure how he trips up the boat at the climax of the scene. I certainly prefer Stuart Baird’s editing. Still, the visceral nature of the rest of the action does float my . . . boat
I want a quantum of solace
But no more than a quantum
I know they do big bags of solace
But i don't want 'em
In Spain we jonkingly call the movie "Cuanto Sol Hace" (similar pronouncing as Quantum of Solace) which basically mean what we say in spain when the day is really sunny. Which is apt for the last part of the movie were the villain lives becuase its in the middle of the desert and its about getting rid of water? I dunno i find this movie utterly boring so I only watched it once.
The thing that people do not see with James Bond is that most of the films (and villains) are mediocre. There are a handful of great ones, a few good ones, but most are just average (but had potential there)
I just threw out all my aprons, AND rags.
Better safe than sorry.
Where's the "leftover story"? Clearly you've never read For Your Eyes Only.
It’s not a leftover story. Only the title was used. Same as Octopussy, Moonraker and many others.
SKYFALL has a great beginning but drops of the rail-tracks quickly. Spectre and NTTD do not exist...😵💫
When Craig's Casino Royale came out, a reviewer I trust said that this is an edgier, grittier Bond. Having been appalled by the violence in Licensed to Kill, I decided that I was done with 007. Nobody has convinced me to change my mind.
Cook it in half the time or the Ball Berrings will burn the cupcakes.
Ah, Mr. Fine - so you have an Agent Orange thumb as well, eh?
Agree. Quantum is worth the rating of two “ehhs” and a raspberry
That's too generous.
"....the plot of which is _Bond at a Dinner Party with uninteresting guests_ "
Is there anyone else out there who thinks Daniel Craig bears a resemblance to Steve McQueen?
Just everyone over 50 who knows who Steve McQueen is.
I loved "Casino Royale" - it is my favourite Bond film. I thought "Skyfall" was really good. I found "Quantum of Solace" very disappointing and I prefer to ignore that it exists.
You don't get enough credit for your matching of clips to narration
Fun but forgettable is my take.
I always felt it was the 3rd Timothy Dalton movie
I always thought Caractatus Potts was an ancestor of Q!
What about that guy at the scrap yard who tells the kids about the car? He’s played by Desmond Llewelyn after all.
@@joshslater2426 I forgot about that! Thanks!
The worst Bond: The forgettable.
Even Die Another day is so bad, its al least memorable.
This was "nothing"
I really like the odd-numbered Daniel Craig Bonds. What a trilogy! The evens, though...
I mean there's only five films so that's not saying much. The only two that were really good were Casino and Skyfall but I disagree with people who hate on Quantum, I still put it above Spectre and No Time to Die, they were both terrible.
I don’t like Skyfall personally. I group it with Spectre and NTTD for being the beginning of Craig’s Bond descending into a depressing soap opera.
@@joshslater2426 you've got to be joking Skyfall is a world away from Spectre, Spectre is the worst of the five films.
I love the film this is imo the 4th act of Casino Royale
Surely a better title for a Casino Royale sequel would be Casino Republique.
Th emusic was good in this movie though.
7:18 press repeatedly for tldr summary
Olga was lovely though.
(Ah, what could have been...)
I do agree however that my initial outright hatred of the film has been replaced with your aforementioned "meeeh". 😂
Dreadful film - then again, although I highly rated Daniel Craig as an actor, I though he was a TERRIBLE Bond. (I thought Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan were the best for the Bond movies, but none of them were remotely as depicted in the Fleming books)
How tf do u know about east anglia, we're no through county!
why does coldplay keep getting away with it?!
Bankrupting car UA-camrs... I see we follow some of the same channels 😂
I genuinely thought this was the worst Bond theme going....then they topped it three more times.
Each decade of Bond music gets progressively worse.
1. Madonna's Die Another Day was already a thing.
2. So was All Time High.
3. You include Adele's Skyfall in your Top Three Worst Bond Themes.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I can't agree with yours. At least, not when it comes to Bond theme songs.
@@aaronleverton4221 What is wrong with Adele's Skyfall? That's easily the best song of Craig's era.
@@ricardocantoral7672 Yes, that's what I said.

Oil Be Damned.
A truly terrible film with a totally God awful plot.
And the only thing really crap about Quantum was the on the nose derivative callback to Goldfinger and everyone overlooks Judi Dench does some of her best acting in this film.
the video does say 'most' not all.
Trash movie but Olga was hot.
Gemma Arterton was pretty hot too. Camille was the better character though.
Tried twice. It's the only Bond film I can't finish.
You aren't missing anything.
Weird. It’s a short one too
