Seeing this video brings tears to my eyes. Theres a lot that Bangladesh has lost. People are not happy, people cant afford to be happy. Life now is just earning money just to be alive. The swimming competition, the karate, all the recreational activities no longer exist in today's kids. In 2005 I was younger then the kid in the video, maybe a few months. Now when I look at our family pictures of back in the time, how the neighbours were like families, my grandparents to me, we've been in Uttara for our whole lives. The whole sector was like family, I remember my dad telling me everyone would rush to help everyone. Today if you would like to go somewhere for the evening its always movies, or a museum maybe, but there's always traffic to keep in mind. Earlier you had so many places to go. I pray to Allah that he gives this generation a chance to improve the life of the people of Bangladesh, kill the corruption. Make it a better place to live in. People should not have to think of leaving the country for a better life and pay.
Looking at this video just makes me think of how much we have lost and didn't achieve and also what we have improved. I can see the ambition in the eyes of the people in this video that didn't make it to the future. The Culture was so vibrant and there at the time. We actually cared for our values. Nowadays We are giving that up for a more "Modern" Way to the point where we are forgetting our own culture. Its only momuments that are keeping our culture alive other than that i can't tell anything else that is holding it. Our Music, Our Fashion, Our Kindness, Our Intellegience are all being striped away for a modern life. But still life right now is much better than back then. We have fixed alot of issues like religious dogmatism, woman's right, education, Traffic laws and Infrastructure and so much more. But its still not enough. We need to learn from our past and bring the good things from it like Our Culture, Music, Kindness etc. We need to take that into consideration and also fix our problems instead of going full Western.
What’s wrong with certain words like ‘modern’ and ‘West’ ? It isn’t a crime for Bangladeshi culture and its people to be modern. The points that you’ve mentioned : music, fashion, kindness, intelligence, women’s rights, education… these wouldn’t have shown signs of improvement over the years if we weren’t living in a modern society. Just because our Bangladeshi culture has become more modern than it was ever before, doesn’t mean “we’re going full Western”. Countries in East Asia like Japan, China and Korea have all embraced modernism and kept their cultural values intact at the same time. Bengalis aren’t forgetting their cultural values, they’ve kept their cultural values intact and are learning to live a modern life like the rest of the world. More or less, almost everything has improved here and there’s still so much we need to improve in. Modern doesn’t always mean “copying the West”, that’s a huge misconception. If you dislike the West, this makes you a xenophobe. The West… by any means… are not trying to take any of our cultural values away from us; as a matter of fact, some of them are now trying so hard to appropriate us, which is something we should definitely be worried about. It is we… the people of this Subcontinent (Bangladeshis, Pakistanis and Indians) who are heavily misunderstanding them but at the same time, we shouldn’t let them get away with appropriating anything that comes from our culture; if you’re not familiar with the term, “cultural appropriation”, search it up on Google and get to know more about it. So you see… it is we, who aren’t copying the West; it’s the West who have been copying us the whole time. There are so many issues that we still couldn’t fix : traffic laws and infrastructure is a perfect example… traffic in major cities as well as on the highways and bridges continue to get worse each passing day; women in this country still get frowned upon when they drive vehicles. Misogyny towards women still continue to happen. If this country ever allowed women to drive or take the job as traffic police, half of all of the traffic jams we have on our streets today, would’ve reduced by 50%. Preserving history is important but it’s not mentally healthy to constantly dwell into the past over and over again. If we stay stuck in the past too often and suffer from attachment issues, we’re missing out what life in the present has to offer. If we continue to live in the present, we can make a better world for the future and the generations that are yet to come after us.
It actually was'nt. I can remember my childhood quite vividly. Much of the roads in dhaka were decrepit, sidewalks did not exist, sewage and filth were strewn on the sides of all major streets, power outage was normal (12hrs a day) without economic downturn, crippling poverty, political chaos and fear of military rule were rampant. In short we had all the problems that we have right now but it was even worse. However, people were much more nicer and kinder, everyone had a sense of communityhood, air was cleaner, autocratic rule and inequality between rich and poor was less, obscenity was far less and there was no culture war between pro religious and anti religious groups.
