Great video. I've got no intention to start a worm farm, I'm busy with my beekeeping. I still found this very informative and entertaining. What I don't understand is how 387 people disliked this video....what the hell were they expecting!? Or more likely, competing worm farmers. :P
I just ordered a couple thousand red works looking to raise them for my chickens and fir local feed stores. This video has provided a lot of insight on how I’m going to set up my worm bed and proper care for them. I really enjoyed it. Thanks from North Carolina
Since your using them for feed. It’s best not to over crowd them otherwise they won’t breed.
1. Physiology: they breath through their skins, so they don't "drown" and need air in the container, but are very sensitive to acid. They are both male and female, so mate themselves, and give out golden eggs.
2. Bed: Drill holes and put some wet sands at the bottom, so the compost doesn't drop out.
3. Worms: Get compost worms (not dirt worms)
4. Bedding: not too wet or dry, you can use compost, coco coir.
5. Pest control: make your beds of solid material and raised. Use pure crushed dolomite (limestone not hydrolysed or chemically treated) to keep ants and flies out. Centipedes eat your compost
*6. Feeding and watering: Don't over-feed your worms = only enough that would be eaten in a few days, and only water lightly, to keep like chocolate cake.

Just a year or two into becoming a certified organic farmer, my father in law was trying to cultivate black beans. But he would drive a few feet, and see that he must be catching the edge of the plants, because black beans were shaking loose all over the ground. When he got out to inspect, he discovered he wasn't seeing black beans on the ground
They were worn holes - dozens and dozens per square ft. The health of his field had returned so much, the worms returned in mass numbers. One of the best harvests ever. When in doubt, study what Mother Nature is doing. She (and insects and other animals) will always tell you what's going on and how YOU should react/adapt
Their biology is fascinating. I’m thinking of possibly doing this with my kids this year. I think it would be fun for them!

your kids would definitely love to live in a worm bed... just dont over feed them, over water them and keep them out of the light. and give them a little crushed lime too...i'll keep the bugs off ... LOL!!!

This really makes me smile. I'm reminded of my grandpa's so much. In the fifties and the City my grandpa put a refrigerator down in the ground. He put holes with screening like you did. When he wasn't working he was fishing. He had nightcrawlers red worms any kind of worm he threw in there. When other people were done fishing, he would ask them what are you doing with your worms. And he would end up with everybody elses worms. The lid fit tight so there was no escapes and nothing getting in.

@@RodeoCowgirl-55 Yes all you could see was the lid from the ground. The rest of it was deep inside. It stayed the right temperature that the warms needed. It was pretty neat for a twelve-year-old girl. Fishing and hunting was his get away through the depression and a way to feed his family. I liked feeding them. Some damp newspapers on the top, Banana peelings and a few other scraps. I was amazed when the next day a lot of it would be eaten. It was like feeding the invisible Critters. Lol lol

I always thought the whole system of setting them up in a mess of shredded paper didn't seem right. I'm new to worms, a couple months in, and use a mix of compost and goat manure and they are thriving so far!

I’m happily surprised that this is a real channel.
I was 9 years old when my Mother decided that she wanted to get worms. Then she wanted an automated feed system so she made it my job to feed the worms. To assist me in the operation 24 Rabbits were installed, so then I had Rabbit food processors to keep fueled and Worms to keep up. So after a couple of years of splitting beds, and wondering why my Rabbit population exploded I had about 60 4x8 beds. Between chickens, hogs, cows, horses and the garden I had no more room for beds. I had know idea what I was doing but by the time I got to high school I had worm castings in 15 foot tall 60 feet long piles and I was running out of room. One day this little Japanese guy comes walking into the yard and asks what I planed to do with all this stuff. I told him if he wanted it just get it out of here. He said he couldn’t just take it, that he had to pay me
something, I got enough to buy my very own Pickup. Then I went into the Marine Corps.
Sounds exciting, you must have a doctorate from home university in animal farming.
That’s awesome and a great way to grow up!

I usually ad lib well and don't do well with script but I was trying to cover a lot of material and having problems with my camera (that's why I re-shot a scene in the log barn) and was suffering from sleep deprivation - so my focus was off. I did notice I was repeating a bit too much after I watched the myself later. Sorry about that. I'll try to tighten in in future videos. I have already also shot a lot of material on microgreens and on my greenhouse that I have yet to post. Hard to find time to edit and process.
I actually had notes for that video and I found using them to be awkward as I was trying to film. That was one of my key problems. No more notes.
Green Gregs finally someone who knows his stuff. I just got some worms for the fun of it. Watched a lot of videos and made bedding of peat moss and feed them purina worm chow. They seem to like it but mu worm chow molds in 24 hours. So every day i have to throw out molded chow. What about mold problem?
it's all good,,,,i'll take content over performance any day...ants dont like wood stove ash,,i mix mine with semi used charcoal,,,charcoal barried in ground will keep termites away from wood structures also,,,they just dont like carbon char,or the lye in the ash(too alkaline),,,around---not in,,they use this technique in hawaii where termites are insane,,,,,for dryer areas-D,E, diatomatious earth---again ,around -------not in
Green Gregs ......i love your videos and think you’re the most knowledgeable on UA-cam when it comes to worm care. I have a question on the dolomite that I hope you can answer. I don’t want to kill my worms by using the wrong product, are you familiar with Amazons Power Grow Dolomite? It claims it’s pure but before I purchase it I’d like to get your ok. Anyway, thanks for the advice on the food, I started not giving so much food and my bin looks better than ever.

My grandfather used to feed his worms used coffee grounds in an old washing machine drum barred in the dirt with 4 inches above the ground and in the shade. They got big and hard. He had a white painted metal lid and would put a concrete block on it.

for every (1) year peat moss is mined,it takes (120)years to re-grow,,(it filters and purifies the earths ground water),,coconut coir ,how ever is renewable,,,don't know if worms will like it though...i like peat also,for my garden,,,it seems easier than coconut coir,but ' am trying to be more eco friendly......so glad you're actually an expert,,not just a vid' maker...learned more in 30 minutes than have in years of people talkin' out their wahzoo,,thanks brother farmer....i'm gonna try plastic 55gal olive oil/wine shipping barrels ,,,cut in half,w/drain holes,,,left over from garden attempt,,,already use in various ways for composting and compost covers(experimental phase)

Hi Gregg, I live in the desert where sometimes my home humidity monitor says 16% but “it’s reading doesn’t go any lower”. I ordered from another supplier before I found you. 😢 I decided that I needed one that they promote as being one you can keep in your house where it is cool and out of the sun. I purchased worms and two complete worm bins with stackable trays that I could add this concoction of paper, volcanic rock, vegetable kitchen waste, etc.. What a mess! The red wrigglers were escaping! I was spritzing the newspaper covering on the top tray, I had nats every where! We do aquaponics on a very small scale in a sunroom so I had to move it out there...then I removed them from the beds to my outside gardens and the rest I put in the aquaponics beds. I know the nats came from a bed being too wet, but I was only spritzing the dry upper layer and the news paper covering...It was too much work and trouble, now the expensive stackable worm towers that I purchased are cleaned up and in the garage wrapped in garbage bags waiting for a new use someday... Do we need to raise our own or can we just purchase them and add them to our gardens? I also don’t know which worms are best for different needs. I know the Red Wigglers are great for composting but which would be for both composting and fishing worms? Thank you for your videos, I learn so much from you!!!

Enough moisture and the more you feed them the more they will multiply. They are hemaphrodites. The worm beds are very friendly for them. Great job. keep on posting. i love your videos.

2feet soil depth for northern states
Bedding: well composted horse/cow manure sitting outside for months in the weather OR Peat moss soaked 24hrs then squeezed out to drip dryness; compost (gone through heat phase)
In ground bed line w/ 6 inch gravel surrounded by concrete blocks; cover bed w/ lid & weight; pure crushed dolomite(lime) in the bed to keep out fly larvae( a light dusting then dampen to dissolve)

Ive been doing worm farming without even realising it.
I have a market garden and csa scheme.
Im surrounded by cattle farms. They deliver thier shed waste of manure and straw in the spring each year. Big piles, 8 ft high.
I just cover the piles with tarp and leave it. By autumn the piles are pure worm castings.
If i have to take some out part through the year, the top looks just like your bin and the worms are all in a layer between the castings and manure.
By about october the worms are gone and a small 2.ft. pile of pure gold is left behind.
This is how i grow anything from melon to garlic on otherwise useless grass land that was drowned in nitrate for 60 years.

The best thing I've found and I'm no expert but I use potting soil with no fertilizer and rabbit poop. I also dry up egg shells and grind to a powder. Will sure start giving mine melons

the worm "pee"/liquid that drains from the worm bin is the most nutrient-rich worm essence/emulsion full of humic acid and beneficial bacteria, good to harvest and use for fertilization/compost teas.
I'm getting so many mixed signals on this! Others saying leachate is toxic to plants. Do you use it successfully?
@@thats_alison745 I do use the leachate on my garden. If you want to be on the safe side I would use it on hardier plants and never feed diseased matter to the worms. Most professionals are hesitant to use it because it has passed through non-composted food scraps which can spread disease if it's already in your worm farm.
the water that drains from the bin is caused leachate. it is not the same as worm tea which has a much higher concentration of castings and nutrients.

I use coco coir and rabbit droppings/ Timothy hay that the rabbits didn't finish eating, cardboard rolls, egg shells, coffee grounds.
All good for worms!
Coffee Grounds are not too acetic for worms?
@@chuckkady7282 the acid in ground coffee is water soluble, so the vast majority of it ends up in your cup. The spent grounds, especially if well brewed, are very near neutral pH.
Spent grounds are still high in caffeine though, which stunts or even prevents plant growth, so never apply directly to soil. Hot compost or vermicompost the grounds. There is a particular type of bacteria that breaks down caffeine. I forget the species.

@@chuckkady7282everyone says worms absolutely love coffee grounds. At the very least it should be safe in moderation, but it's up to you.

I found this very informative and intriguing, thank-you. Was looking up the subject out of curiosity as I recently found a bunch of worms living in the soil of one of my houseplants as i was transplanting it. It was a green Pepper plant that had been over-wintering inside for the winter after I pulled it from the garden last year. Was planted in half compost/half top soil, with a small layer of mulch around the top, and the worms were going nuts. So glad to have found that and found this info on them.

New to this channel and found you gave great tips. I purchased 2000 worms 2 years ago this month. My castings look like what your bins are showing. I have noticed that in many videos where shredded paper is being used, the soil looks tan colored. Will be watching for more information you share. Blessings from Maine.
This is the kind of guy that I know he could be 10 years old and I could be 20 and if he said I’ve got 10 years of experience I would listen to him he seems like the kind of guy that picks up knowledge twice as much as everyone else he’s so knowledgeable
Thanks Greg, this popped up by UA-cam. Worms and gardening is a vital part of how I found your channel in the prepping community. Greg from NY to be specific. With all the war and control out there. Gardening is one of my biggest preps. Compost leading to worms. My compost is just full of worms and it's very wet and mostly food scraps with crushed leafs. If I want them thrive it looks like I have to make A dedicated worms bed.

Could you use wood ash to raise the pH of your bed, or is that bad for the worms?
Great video! Thanks for all the info. I've been wanting to get into raising worms to add more variety to my duck's diet.
As long as you place any food only in a corner of your bin and not strewn across the top, you can feed your worms anything you want because the worms themselves will decide whether to approach or move away from whatever you give them. In this way if you want to introduce any special materials you want in your compost, the worms will process the material for you. So for instance I live near the Pacific Ocean and periodically I'll harvest kelp from the ocean and give them to my worms. The worms will eat the kelp which will infuse the minerals from the kelp into my compost. And, it doesn't hurt that some sand is introduced into the bin to help the worms digest food better. For your purposes, ask yourself why you want the wood ash. If it's to modify the Ph, that's probably not an effective reason but if you're trying to balance something or are targeting a special need creating compost for a specific plant, then go ahead and give it to your worms... But as I describe which will allow your worms how much or fast to consume on their own.

Borax for ants sprinkle around the base of beds. We used to put a line of 40 mile team borax around the foundations of . the house and barns plus use line on your potato plants and tomatoes plants for bug control gramma did when i was kid in 60s when I was a kid

Great video! You're absolutely right that springtails are harmless (and that they're not true insects - they evolved separately to insects). They're fantastic for soil health - their diet is mostly fungus so they're amazing for keeping pathogenic fungus levels down. They are also adorable if you can manage to look at the tiny buggers up close. Their friendly presence should be encouraged. :)

Wrigglers are some the best worms at regeneration, if you actually did cut your worms in half, I’d say you’d get above 80% survival. Wrigglers can make 2 worms from 1, nightcrawlers usually just can regrow the posterior on the head end.

Hey I like your video I used to dig worms for a living selling them by the 1000 at a time and the best thing I fed them was a small sprinkle of cornmeal anout twice a week and digging them under piles of last year's cow manure I added a handful of that cow manure and the dirt it was with and it kept them alive for months and months
