Anton Rubinstein - Symphony No.2 in C-major, Op.42 "Ocean" (1880)

Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein (Анто́н Григо́рьевич Рубинште́йн) (November 28 [O.S. November 16] 1829 - November 20 [O.S. November 8] 1894) was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who became a pivotal figure in Russian culture when he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.

Los siete movimientos de la versión final de la Segunda Sinfonía representan los Siete Mares. El movimiento de apertura ofrece una evocativa imagen del mar, suavemente conducido, y hay que reconocer que con mucho de la claridad de forma y textura que Mendelssohn habría admitido. Su conclusión triunfante abre camino a un ambiente más contemplativo de contraste casi siniestro. Las aguas subyacen para permitir un tercer movimiento más alegre, en el cual las tormentas pueden seguir introduciendo cualquier turbulencia calmada por la serenidad del oboe y la melodía rapsódica de las cuerdas. De cualquier modo el peligro potencial del mar permanece hasta los últimos compases del movimiento. A continuación hallamos un fresco Allegro, con una invención melódica rusa digna de Chaikovski subyaciendo durante todo el movimiento. Hay algo casi operístico en el dramático Andante que viene a continuación, tanto en la línea melódica como en las reminiscencias del material anterior. El sexto movimiento de la sinfonía es un Scherzo, en el que Chaikovsky detectó una alegre danza de marineros, que abre el camino a un agradable Trío. El último de los siete movimientos trae al viajero de los Siete Mares de nuevo al hogar, el peligro pasa y las tormentas se olvidan.

The musical (symphonic) purpose going through these seven movements is a bit beyond me. I hope, even expect, that with further listenings I'll be able to pin it down. It's very beautiful stuff, nevertheless.

First time in my life that I have heard this. I am impressed. "like". Is there any kind of printed program to this work, or does it just suggest moods. That 2nd movement is obviously some sort of storm.
