For anyone who may be still listening out there, "Sportster knee" from Ironhead days, was "always" caused by riders who did not know what they were doing. I rode kickstart models for many years, and never got "Sportster knee", because an old timer clued me in when I was new to it. And I listened. There's 3 things to this... You 'MUST' keep your bike 'tuned properly'. That means carb jetted corectly, points in proper adjustment, and tappets adjusted. If you ride to work daily, you should be adjusting & lubing your points once every month or two. If you don't, it will become a chore to start it, needing 'multiple kicks, & ample cussing.' It' s 'your fault'. E-Starts will still start fine out of adjustment to quite a degree, but not a "CH" ! Also, it's best to adjust the tappets at the same time you do the points, for max ease of kick starting. If you don't want to fool with it, you bought the wrong bike. Sell it & go buy a honda. Do those things & you should not have to kick it more than 3 times to start it... 5 times & you should stop kicking & look for the problem. There is one. (provided you primed properly) Ok, SECOND... when you pump it up on compression, 'never take your weight off the pedal again !' Almost everyone lifts their weight off the pedal when beginning to come down on the kicker pedal - "THERE'S THE PROBLEM !!" Train yourself NOT TO DO THAT ! Thats when the kicker gears disengage, & when you come down on it, there' s nothing there ! OR if it's kicking back, it's either TOO ADVANCED, or TOO LEAN ! When you set the timing, just put the mark on the flywheel right in the 'middle of the hole' , for best starting, etc. THIRD- Train yourself to NEVER LOCK YOUR KNEE when you come down on the kick pedal... Aways keep your knee bent just a little ! If it falls through, or kicks back , you won't fuck up your knee ! This info was shared freely with me by a great Sportster builder & racer named Sportster Tom Whiteman, and now he has given it to you as well. It has served me well for 50 years. He passed away 2 winters ago on New Years Eve. Spread the wealth as you go through life. Thats what he did.
original kick starters were infamous to kick back destroying your legs. remember the sportster knee?? this works in a different manner, does it give the same problems??

Please excuse the stupid question. Can this be done on a 2017 Sporty? Mine's been sitting at the dealership since early May waiting for a back ordered part, if I had a kickstart all would be fine.
I'm new to motorcycles. My purpose for wanting a kicker is as a backup in case the battery dies while I'm in a remote area of Alaska. Will the kicker work even with a dead battery?
you only need enough charge to create spark. in my kick only '76 i can let it sit for a couple weeks before its too weak to make enough spark. w/that said, if you run an electric starter/ signals/ whatever else besides basic head and tail light, in my experience will kill your battery fast while you're trying to kick it if it's not already at a good charge. my 2 cents
Ctnewman on Instagram make a magneto kit for sportster cam covers. So you can go batterlyess. New magnetos give enough spark to start everytime and keep tail and headlight running bright.

Kickers aren't a great way to deal with totally flat batteries, because dead batteries heavily load the charging system and if you have a shorted cell you can fry parts. There's another, excellent way to light off bikes you don't ride often. I use a JNC jump start pack (avoid Walmart and other chain store cheapshit) for any vehicle. I bought one after using them at a used car lot. JNC doesn't use delicate switches or tiny cables. www.cloreautomotive.com/JNC.php
